To end plays and drills? Why do you guys use sheet protectors? I'm in the Bay Area, CA so it's typically perfect football weather. I'm thinking most of you guys use them because of sweat? Upstate NY Buffalo area. One day it will be 85 and sunny next day 60 and rain! Not to mention what the weather will be in October and if we're lucky enough November.

I personally do not partake, but I would freak out if they didn't.

Since you are asking can you tell me any reason we need one besides during team flex on Friday night? I was just always used to a whistle till I got here and now I don't even notice it. Just because you've always done something doesn't mean you need it. Start or stop plays and drills. I mean, that's how they do it in games, why not do it in practice? What do you do? Yell stop? If that's the right way to do it, why don't they do that in games? Because a whistle is an easy, loud, definitive way to start and or stop something. I've never heard a coach say "Play till you hear someone say stop". You still didn't answer why you would ban them entirely. What exactly is the point of that?

Hahahahahaha, Let's just say this about our weather- last year we practiced in snow on a Tuesday. By Friday it was 60. By Monday it was back in the 40s. I don't think you could label our weather as anything close to "perfect" football weather more than 30% of the year.

I'm an oaf. Today it might rain. It would be the first time in about three weeks and the second time in about two months. Weather in the 40's? I've never even been in snow lol.
I really don't get the not having a whistle thing. On offense, every drill begins on cadence and ends with a whistle. On defense, every drill has a cadence and begins on offensive movement or snap of the ball and ends with a whistle. A lot of the offensive skills guys don't carry whistles and then wonder why their kids stop early.

Our long-tine HC once yelled at an assistant, asking him "How can you coach without a whistle?". Since then it's been "Ah, you must be a coach because I see that you have a whistle". Seriously, I carry a whistle because we quick-whistle everything in group/team. One coach might see a dangerous situation that others can't because of where they're standing. I never use whistles during individual because personally, i hate the freakin' things. I don't take them to games because there would be inadvertent whistles. Of course, I'm in the booth now so blowing a whistle would be just plain crazy.

A whistle, pocket shorts, pen, hat, sunglasses, practice plan and my iphone with alarms programmed in to match our practice periods. (we don't have a period timer and I will b!tch if we get off schedule). On that note - why have a #$%#$ practice plan if you aren't going to stick to it? Do not tell me I have a 10 minute inside run for the D/7 on 7 for the O period and I'm at inside run and we end on time (like the schedule says), meanwhile the 7 on 7 goes 2 more minutes. We could get 4 more reps in 2 minutes. Stay on schedule!!!! I'm with you about staying on schedule. My HC runs over all the time and it drives me crazy. Do you set your phone to go off at 5 min intervals or what?

Dear lord I didn't mean to put a bee in your bonnet. I also never said anything about banning whistles. My head coach at my current school is the instigator of this. I will go tell him today that even though we have won 44 in a row and 3 straight championships we need to get everyone a whistle ASAP cause we are doing it wrong.

If he wants to use a whistle, fine. If you don't, do what you want. It's not like we're talking about how awesome the Double Wing is.

You have still yet to tell us the advantage of not having a whistle does for your team/program. I've said it once and I'll say it again: Just because you win, doesn't mean you are doing things the most efficient or best way.

I just don't see what the point of not using a whistle is. You have yet to point out a positive to it, or why you would do it other than to be different. You may not have said they're banned, but you definitely said you're a "no whistle" place. What's that if not banning them? And what the hell does your record have to do with it? I really doubt your success on the field has anything to do with your use of a whistle or not. I mean, we've won 24 regular season games and three straight conference titles. Doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with a whistle. I just wanted to know why you don't use one. You asked why I do and I answered your question. You still haven't answered why you don't use one.
