I might take some heat for this one but.... don't be the sweater vest/ visor guy. We always make fun of that guy.

Whatever you do don't have all the other guys you are with coordinate the same thing to wear each day. It doesn't look as cool as you might think. You better have a discussion about it though... Case in point; yesterday at the Atlanta clinic, we were all three getting ready and about to head out when we realized that all of us were wearing the same shirt. We decided this wasn't a good idea, but none of us were lively enough to change so out we went. To address the Original Question, Tog nailed it with the "dress for your next job" comment. That's basically what I told one of my assistants who attended his first clinic last month. He eventually wants a high school job, so I told him he should dress like it.

Sometimes the law of averages catches up with you. We've only been at our present job for a year so we only have two polos eac so it happens. The ones that are really funny are the ones who dress identically head to toe and walk in the "duckling parade" around the clinic (I've always wondered why so many coaches are sticklers about the kids not wearing hats in the building while they, the coaches, never take off their hats).

Coachbdud,
Why you hating on the visors? Do you have a reseeding hair line and you get your widows peek sun burnt? J/K!
I am very amazed that this thread is as big as it is. I don't even remember thinking twice about what I wear to clinics, unless I am speaking.
I thought we were all football coaches, not the fashion police!

I think, if anything, this thread is an awesome indication to how boring this time of year is for the majority of football coaches. I HATE February and March. And as visors go, I can't really stand the stereotypical visor wearing spread guy, but I have one I wear nearly every day of the summer and to every practice. It's disgusting, dirty and smelly but I like it because it shades my eyes but isn't very hot. I never wear it to games, but it's an awesome thing to wear to mow or do stuff throughout the summer.

I'm not a hat person period, I wore one when I played HS baseball because it is required but have not worn a hat once since I just can't stand the way visors look and laugh at anyone wearing one

"Coaching Clinic" attire = Sports Bar attire did I say that out loud? ha! This! A good friend, who happens to be a very good coach in our state once told me, "Clinics are to drink beer. Visiting colleges and other HS coaches are for football." I went to two this winter (and, am going to visit other schools and colleges during their spring practices over the next couple months), one of which was the Nashville Glazier clinic. Apparently it was pretty good from what I hear lol (annual trip) One thing though, for the love of everything, don't wear your coaching gear out to the bars. I'm sure most of you are like me and outkicked your coverage by a long way when you married your wife, so the dress to impress when you go out is irrelevant, but don't wear your gear out to the bars.

The HC is a visor guy, so that is what the staff wears. I would prefer those over the ghetto flat billed thug hats. Can't the season just get here. I know I started this but we are like a bunch of girls discussing fashion.

Have no fear.....here is a visor wearing Wing-T, Wishbone guy. Hats bother me. Probably because my head is so abnormally large (why do visors fit? No clue). I'm a HC who is a visor guy, that's old school offense and half of the time, my practice schedule is jotted down on a standard note/index card. I don't wear them at clinics, though. Matter of fact, outside of being in a gym watching a ballgame, I try not to ever wear hats indoors. Lord knows Im not Captain Manners, but that's one thing I've always tried to do (or not do). Trying to break the mold.....

Love the visors - allows you to protect your eyes from the sun and stay cool as well with heat escaping - unless you wear it like duck boy up above - that is a sad excuse for a man, odds are he did NOT play football...
Really prefer the big a$$ straw hat!

There is no excuse for a man to wear a visor... PERIOD Also never wearthose stupid jackets baseball coaches wear... Light windbreaker jacket that has short sleeves... There is no excuse for a professional to show his {censored} by making ridiculous blanket statements either, but ... here we are. Notice, I didn't say "there is no reason for a professional to wear shorts & a hat to a clinic. PERIOD" or "There is no reason for a professional coach to wear shorts during a Friday night, Varsity football game... PERIOD" ... Those would be blanket statements and - to many - would be considered ridiculous. I know you were trying to be funny - at least I hope so... but, I failed to find humor in it. We should seriously be critiquing the styles & clothing choices of another coach? I mean, I have my opinions on what I think is "appropriate" attire for games, clinics, classroom, etc. but that is between me and our staff ... I don't intend to preach that on to you or other coaches not on our staff. Now, should we work together, then we'll need to have this discussion ... otherwise, I'll keep the commentary to myself. Granted, when I see coaches wearing what I "deem improper" I don't make a big deal of it to them. But, I do find it harder to take them seriously - and that is a shame, I know ... we do that naturally even though we know better. But, I hope I can refrain from trying to call someone out or whatever simply because I have a personal preference that is opposite of theirs.

I love my dri fit, visors, and shades when it's warm. As it gets colder, I start to pull out the windbreakers (including my cutoff windbreakers), and then bust out the hoodies as it gets into November
I guess I broke the fashion laws of the coaching profession lol

I dress like I do for a game - khakis and team polo, maybe pull out the sweats/team wind suit on the last day. I do wear shorts at our state clinic which is the week before the season starts in the July heat. Networking is part of the deal of a clinic.
Of course I like to bring a team polo from a another school/previous stop for the nightly affairs in Ye Olde Pub. That way if College Buddy shows up he isn't associated with my school.

It is a personal issue. Comfort is important but need certain degree of professionalism in appearance and behavior as you are representing program-school-community.
If you are networking (and sometimes you don't KNOW when you are), the old adage "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" is worth remembering.

Visors are fine - maybe not in a clinic though
Hats cover bedhead and hathair - visors do not...
Visors allow to rock your hairstyle and be safe from skin cancer (I have a ton in my family)
