I'll answer a question with a question. What would you do if an HC said this to you in front of an entire team? "You're a fat phukin' sorry-a$$ excuse of a phukin coach who can't even get his OL to phukin' block right. Even after given a half a phukin' hour of INDY time every day, you still can't get these phukin'' kids to bring the pads down!!" Bear in mind, this little rant came from the same guy who made a second string QB strip down to his underwear and do up-downs in a puddle of mood. I wouldn't blame a kid one bit if he left after a public tirade like this. I wouldn't either. That's way beyond being "read the riot act". Yeah I'd say CB handled it right and a player would be entitled to react the same way. CB certainly kept the situation from escalating by leaving the field. I don't always agree with walking away but I think it was the best course of action in this situation. Here's another question, would CB have been justified in hanging it up after such an incident? I would say so. It would be well beyond embarrassing to come back out to coach after that. I'm assuming you did Coach and good for you. I just couldn't imagine, as a head coach, pissing in my own tent at all let alone emptying my bladder. This was absolutely ridiculous, no doubt about it.

Yeah, I finished out the season. There was only two weeks left so I sucked it up.
The whole sub varsity staff was a mess that year; we didnt get along. The HC and I had words like that in the office several times during the season; lots of colorful expletives. I dropped as many f-bombs as he did, i just did it privately. We were both young, arrogant and stupid coaches who always felt we were right and would duke it out over stupid crap. I didn't work well with others at the best of times back and I turned into a tool when I felt I was being attacked. We d-mn near went to blows over the fact that we couldn't get Power going during a game we actually won.
Today, I would have just told the HC to take the OL if he felt like I wasn't getting the job done.

How would you react if a player did that? What if you yelled at a kid at practice and he "excused himself"? I'll answer a question with a question. As arrogant as the coach sounds he probably would have been good with it. Sounds like too young guys going at it. Problem with the HC is he if he continues these actions he will end up getting more than his feelings hurt.

Sounds like too young guys going at it. This entire situation seems excessive for that even. I'm what most coaches would consider young at 30 and I've been a head varsity coach for 6 years with two different programs. I have never been involved in that type of tirade with an assistant let alone on the practice field in front of the kids. Nor would I ever even consider that an appropriate course of action. So I'm not sure the "too young guys going at it" explanation is entirely the answer. Part of it most certainly lies with that. However, I think it may have more to do with the personalities in general.

However, I think it may have more to do with the personalities in general. Moral of the story; approach coaching like OJW. Keep your emotions and ego in check and have rational solutions to problems. The HC may have been out of line but I could have headed off a lot of problems but controlling my temper and ditching my pride. I should have just told him to take the OL when it became clear that the issue wasn't the OL's performance; it was the friction between he and I. Over the years I have learned to really dial in on what I can control and what I can do to improve situations. I was quite the opposite in my formative coaching years; I paid too much attention to the external issues and made mistakes. My previous HC gig was miserable but I did take a lot away from it.
