We are thinking about eliminating individual awards in our program. I want the focus to be on team. It is what we preach every day. I have always had a problem with our one day focus on individuals. I am looking for input from those coaches who have adopted this model.

Do you mean end of season awards or things like helmet stickers, etc?

I think this is the same as everyone gets a trophy. I understand why you're considering this, but, at the end of the day, individuals still make up the team. Without committment and execution from individuals, there is no team.
I think your program would take a hit. Parents love the individual awards, kids love them, it's what banquets are for, banquets make for good pep-rallys for the program. And if you don't recognize your top FAMILIES then expect these families to get a bad taste in their mouth...potentially even move to a different school...and potentially not recommend your school to other families.
I mean, think about it, to pretend your All-Conference RB, who is a leader of your program is just as important to the team as the kid who misses practices, doesn't give it his all, never works out, and just plain sucks, is doing a disservice to your program.

Bad idea for all the reasons people have stated already. Please dont allow the little league mentality of everyone is a winner into high school. Without star players that excel more than others you wouldn't have a very good team. This also doesnt teach them anything for when they get into the real world.

ok, opposite view -- except for the conference/district/state patches they are awarded we do not give individual awards for our team. Football is the ultimate team game. If a d-back gets gets an interception its often because a lineman rushed the QB. If the QB makes a touchdown pass the O-line prbably did a good job. Kicker gets a long field goal - probably a good snap and hold. So we do not give MVP or that kind of stuff.
It has worked out for us - but yes you may get some disgruntled parents at the beginning.

Kicker gets a long field goal - probably a good snap and hold. So we do not give MVP or that kind of stuff. It has worked out for us - but yes you may get some disgruntled parents at the beginning. And then there's a play where the entire team breaks down due to bad execution, miscommunication, or whatever, and one individual simply stands up with no help from his teammates and makes a game-saving play. That is how we won our first game, and how another team beat us to give us our first loss. One player, while the rest of the team was playing sub-par, just put the team on his back. We had no chance of winning that first game if it wasn't for that one player improvising on the fly. We would have for sure beat our opponent in week two if they didn't have a QB who flat-out willed himself to win the game. Great players make great plays, even at times when the rest of the team isn't stepping up. To act like that great player is no more "important" to the team than your third third string long-snapper is just being foolish. It is still a team, because everyone plays under the same rules, and goes through the same trials. Those who step "above and beyond the call of duty," deserve that extra gratitude from the rest of the team. At the end of the season, most of the kids know, whether they vote or not, who will be the MVP, who will be the offensive MVP, defensive MVP, etc. We've never had a problem with individual awards or complaints here.

I don't understand how emphasizing "Team" is the same as "Everybody gets a trophy".

You can give individual awards without diminishing Team concept or emphasis.
We give out MVP, Most Improved, Most Spirited (Enthusiasm), Offensive POY, Defensive POY, Scout Team POY, and Special Teams POY at end of year. the kids vote on them as they do Co-Captains at beginning of year.
We used to give out Players of the Week in last four areas too but stopped just because it was more work and same kids could win almost every week.
Only had problem with it one year at one school and that was because of the people involved, not ideas behind the rewards.

We give an MVP, a most dedicated/hardest worker type award, and a character award that was started by our staff. I will be honest and think from watching the reaction from the parents of the players who have gotten the character award that it means more to them than an MVP award would. Don't see anything wrong with recognizing kids who excel and leave a mark on the program. The farther away we get from recognizing outstanding individual efforts the closer we get to flying the hammer and sickle as our flag...

I HATE awards
We do SOOOOOO MAAAANNNNYYY
I am talking more than the usual MVP, and scholar athlete, sportsmanship blah blah blah
We have a big city sports hall of fame, and the school actually produced a good amount of D-1 and NFL players back in the day so we have a TON of awards that we are required to give out
We HAVE to give out team mvp offensive mvp defensive mvp scholar athlete rivalry game mvp award
and then after that we have all of these awards named after former players that go for... best back best OL best DL coaches award and there are more I am missing
in total easily over a dozen
It sucks, especially in a season like this one where we as a staff resent some of our kids and had some major problems with kids... it becomes very difficult to pick kids that truly deserve an award and we end up picking who we hate least lol

We don't to a player of the year or anything like that. We have all league awards, all state, etc. Thats where our individual recognition comes from. Which in my mind seems to carry a lot more honor than an only within the team award anyway. I don't buy the commie argument, that seems a little out there to me.

If the kids vote on the awards - what's the big deal?
Again, I don't think there would be a big problem if we didn't give MVP, POYs, etc.
We do it because we always have.
Maybe not good enough reason to keep doing so.
But haven't read-heard good enough reason to stop, either.

We have kids vote for o MVP, d MVP, lineman of the year, st MVP, and raider leadership award which is who they think represents the program the best and works hard and is everything they'd want a teammate to be. We then give a coaches award and the academic award. Seems like a lot but I like them and think the kids voting gives more validity. I wouldn't however be upset if we didn't have any, not the end of the world just not my preference.

I'd be interested to see how many who are so adamant against eliminating awards are the same guys that are against kids wearing extra clothes and spat and such I'd be interested for you to specifically explain what one issue has to do with the other. Well it may be a loose correlation at best but the argument against letting them wear extra things is that they are taking away from the team concept but you have some semi-ripping the OP for saying he wants to do away with awards because he thinks it takes away from the team concept. The individualization is what I'm talking about, however I realize that one is coach or team directed and the other is self directed. And for the record, I like the awards but wouldn't be too bothered if we didn't have them and I don't care what the players wear but wouldn't be bothered if they all had to be uniform.

We are not doing team awards this year as well. We plan on recognizing any player that got all league, county or state. That would be the only individual recognition that we have. We do however give academic awards. We had our Jv banquet and did the same thing did not have any complaints from the parents.

We do not give individual awards except for naming captains for the year. We name 2 captains at the beginning of the season and then name 2 game captains each week based on effort, attitude, and leadership displayed during the practice week. We also name scoout team players of the week each week. Anyway at the banquet we recognize all-conference players ect. and then give out awards to for guys who we choose as captains for the year. I have been here for 3 years now and some parents have asked why we don't give out more awards but when I have explained it they have understood. Certainly not the only way to do it but it is our way of doing it.

No individual awards for any sport in our school except for all conference plaques provided by the conference. Senior athletes receive a plaque listing all sports participation and achievements (state finals, conference champ, etc.) School has been doing it a long time without any problems.

We let the kids vote for captains (coaches get a vote as well). At the end of the season we do MVP's (I feel since FB's the ultimate team game there cannot be just one) for example last year the MVP's were our starting oline since we rushed for 3,000 yards on the season. We also do a most improved award, most inspirational award (usually a less talented kid who finds a way to get it done) and a hammer award (best hitter of the year). I like awarding the kids "who got you there" (playmakers) as well as the lesser talented kids that you still need to have in your program for depths sake. But most of all, I like to have awards as a reminder of what we need to have in this program. We need playmakers, hitters and less talented kids to come together to make a team. I see no issue with having an award to recognize these needs and who fulfilled them.
We also do helmet decals but again in a team concept. Like when we score a TD we award the scorer as well as the left or right side of the line that the TD came behind. This gets the left and right side of the line to compete. It gets pretty intense sometimes which is what I want.
Just my 2 cents which is probably about all it's worth.
