Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do anyhow, someone will accuse you of running up the score. A couple of weeks ago, we're ahead 36-0 in the third quarter. We squib kick, like we always do, but the kicker mis-hits the ball and it bounces off one of their front line guys and we fall on it. We score shortly thereafter to go up 43-0. We put in our subs. On our next possession, we don't do anything after the subs pick up a pair of penalties and we punt---the snap is high and the punter takes off, thinking the kick may be blocked. He runs it to the one. Subs score. 50-0, 4 minutes left in the third. Twos play a little while, then in come all the rests for most of the 4th quarter. Final score is 50-21 as other team goes up and down the field on our JVs and leftovers. After the game, two of their assistants come across the field with "f... you", "f... all of you", "we're not shaking your f.... hands", etc and then go after one of my assistants who tried to shake their hands, push one of my kids who is in the handshake line and all but instigate what could have developed into a full blown brawl. Fortunately, our kids and the great majority of theirs had better sense than the two assistants and something really nasty was avoided. The officials and their chain crew on our side knew the circumstances---they heard me complain on both the kick plays and ask the officials about throwing a flag after the run with the punt. It didn't matter---we're now villains when we trying to do the right thing. Sometimes it just doesn't matter what you do. Wow. So the score was 50 to 0 and you already had the subs in. And it finishes 50 to 21. They should have been thanking you.

we got accused of running up the score a couple weeks ago. It was 3 & 5 and we ran our stick concept. We thought we would hit our TE on a 5 yard stick and that was that. Well the linebacker, safety and corner all jumped the stick route and our back up QB hit the go for a 30 yard touchdown.
The opposing coach started yelling at us from the other sideline, oh well. I don't make enough to worry about his team aslo.
I still have no idea why a corner would jump a 5 yard stick.

Sometimes after blowout wins, I feel more sorry for their kids. Especially when you look out there and see that they clearly have talent, but it's their coaching and system that are failing them. Sometimes the other staffs just need to step up their game and become better coaches.

the longer I have been in the game I have done a better job of not running up the score. That being said, someone mentioned if they were up by three touchdowns in the fourth quarter they would put in subs. Not in our state with our playoff system. You get credit for a +14 point win so you darn well know coaches aren't going to lessen up until theres a 30 point lead or more.
Not as concerned about other teams running it up on me as I used to be either. BUT, this year had a coach kick an onside kick when they were up 50-30. We recovered it but one of our front line kids got injured - I was pretty steamed. Paybacks are heck.
The biggest margin I have had ever had as a coach when I was young and dumb -- put our third string kicker to kick off - he shanks a kick that crosses the 50 and comes back to us and we recover the kick. Coach was hot and no matter how I tried to explain that it wasn't intentional - he wasn't buying it (but I probably wouldn't have either if it had happened to me)

I got a couple of nasty emails on Sunday after a semi-final win Saturday because of this very subject.
We were up big going into the 4th quarter, we had all of our "depth" in and we were clicking right along. The opposing DC never pulled his better kids and started rushing eight guys. They hadn't done anything like that all year; just drew it up in the dirt. They put us in a 3rd and 5 situation so I called a Waggle, the QB hit the FB out in the flats and the kid walked into the end-zone from 45 yards out because of the heavy rush.
Apparently, I was running up the score.

A few years back we were spread and up big on a team from the same town. We put in our 3rd team. Don't know about y'all, but our 3rd team is usually pretty poor - especially in the spread. They brought the house. We were just running zone and my freshman RB was getting killed. That was bs. The next time we get the ball, they keep blitzing, so I run fast screen. TD. We get the ball back. They keep blitzing. I am not going to get my freshman RB killed, so I call another screen. TD. We end up winning 62-7. Of course, they throw a fit. All they had to do was play base defense and the score would have been somewhat respectable - 48-14 or so.
Heard their AD was running her mouth all week that any team with class or sportsmanship would never score 60 on a team. The very next game they beat a team 65-0. LMAO

I've been way more pi$$ed when we were on the good side of blowouts because of that crap, than when we were on the bad side of blowouts.

Coachhuey, I believe its naive to say "nobody focus on the scoreboard" regardless of what us coaches focus on the kids will no matter what focus on the scoreboard. I have the tail of two teams this year. My h.s. team has very little talent and we are losing some games bit. My youth team is domiant and we could win most games . One game we are playing in youth we are up 22 to 0 first qtr. I pull my starting running backs. During the second half the opposing coach is yelling across the field and calling us cheaters. He is calling out specific kids on our team. I finally had enough. I call timeout and talk with the white cap. White cap calls opposing coach over and tells him to stop the nonsense. He continues to say, I can say whatever I want. I explain to him that these are 12yr old boys. He says I dont care. I tell him we could be up 70 to 0. He laughs at me. I go to sideline put my starters in and we score within a minute. We win the game 28-14 and the coach is pissed at me. The pres of league was there and thanked me. The oppossing coach continues to run his mouth after the game "I cant wait to play you again". Well he is going to get his wish. We play them first round of the playoffs. Other scenario: My h.s. team last week. We are losing 27-0 4th qtr 6min left in game. Opposing team lines up and stacks a side and kicks an onside kick. Then with three min left in game this coach is literally (no exageration) double reverse pitch passes, half back passes. Needless to say Im not to happy. After game I tell my kids we are not shaking hands. I catch some grief from the ad. He tells me from now on know matter what you shake hands (he is correct) I was wrong. The opposing teams ad calls our ad and apologizes. He tells my ad that this team has been reprimanded for doing this earlier in the year. Here is my deal. Im as competitive as the next guy, I want to win as much or more than most. You can win/lose with class. I see far to many coaches with egos that think they need to win 60 to 0. Run you base plays do not pass, unless opposing idiot coach is sending all 11.

Run you base plays do not pass, unless opposing idiot coach is sending all 11. 1) play to win the game once that is secured 2) play to win future games (play 1's longer depending on what your team needs, work on certain things you need to get on film... play the 2nd team running the regular offense so they can get reps at it) once that is done 3) play the rest, play the principal's kid, the 120 pound lineman, whatever is left on the sideline to finish the game, avoid injury to your starters, get the game over as fast as possible don't concern yourself solely with the score .... it is about achieving those objectives. time left, quick strike ability of the opponent, time in the season, how much work you've gotten in up to this point in the season, etc. lots of factors involved --- most of which are more important than what the score of the game is. you can have a 42-7 game and it not be a case of some jerk running up the score. we constantly preach to our players "we don't grade the scoreboard" ... "we grade effort". play hard, do things right. when you're in, do your job. etc. If we deem that they should be playing on the field, they should be playing to the best of their ability. We'll control playing time, which by the nature of that in conjunction with play calls, should keep us on track to achieve the above mentioned objectives while not appearing like total jerks just out to see how many bulbs we can light up on a scoreboard.

One of my biggest pet peeves on "running up the score" is that people see a big number and just assume one team was unsportsmanlike about it. I was on the wrong end of an 84-8 game several seasons ago and I can honestly say the other team wasn't being unsportsmanlike about it--they had a lot of backups in, scored 4 or 5 defense/special teams TDs, we turned it over several times in the redzone or we may have more, etc. On the other hand, I was on the wrong end of a 42-14 game two years ago, and the other team was very unsportsmanlike about it, going so far as to no-huddle and throw a couple hail-mary type passes on us with starters trying to tack on one more. www.saukvalley.com/2009/02/21/score-subject-when-is-enough-enough-local-coaches-and-athletes-weigh-in/at6drnh/?__xsl=/print.xslWe had a team around here winning a game 88-0 at halftime back in 2005. The score was not being run up. The other team was simply awful...terrible "spread" team that threw 7 first-half INTs (4 of which were returned for TDs) and they couldn't tackle (3 punts and the opening kickoff were all returned for TDs). In fact, the team that scored 88 points only ran about 10 plays on offense the entire first half. Thing is, if you suck, you shouldn't be running an offense that makes you suck even more. That game wasn't far from my neck of the woods. There was a similar game last year; final score was 62 - 7. Of course, the winning team went up 55-0 in the first quarter. Special teams scores, turnovers, pick six, offense was a juggernaut. People around here wouldn't stop bitching about them running up the score. Well what the hell were they supposed to do? Sometimes one team just outclasses another.

Glad I saw this thread. We won our 1st round play off game this year by a score of 68-20. I will try to make a long story somewhat concise. Bottom line is we expected this to be a good game and it was not. We were up 41-7 at half. I subbed 17 positions on the 3rd series of the second half. I would have subbed all but due to injury I could not sub my wings and QB. The other team did not sub anybody and scored on their next series. Now it was 55-14 and they onside kick. We recover. I send my 2nd string offense back out (8 back ups and starting QB/Wings again due to injury). They keep their 1st defense in and we get to 4th and 4. I must admit I was getting a little frustrated at this point b/c we were in the same position in week 3 and subbed everybody in the 2nd half and the other team played all starters and my 2nd string FB got his leg broken. Emergency surgery, rod in the leg, the whole deal. Now here we are in a similar position. I bring my starting O back in and convert the 4th down for 2 reasons. The first was we had not punted all game and our opponents local paper had mentioned that our opponent were experts at blocking punts (we also saw them block 2 punts on film). The second reason was he had his ones in was still trying to score and was kicking onsides. I kept my one's in 2 more plays after the 4th down conversion and pulled them again. He finally got the hint and started to sub. We score once more with our 2's on offense and they score once more with their 2 's on offense. Now it's 61-20. We send our KR team out after their final score. Now we are expecting another onside. I tell my kids to be ready for onside but if they kick deep run normal return. This is where it gets interesting. Our normal KR is what we call the startburst return. Basically it involves some hand offs and misdirection. This is the ONLY KR we run. They have this KR on 3 films as our only KR. The only time we don't run it is when we screw it up. I also am expecting an onside. Well.... they kick it right to our guys (with 2 back up returners in the game mind you) and our guys run it to perfection and we score. Now for the record we have not returned a KO for TD in 19 games. But we score and it looks a little fancy with a hand off from one guy to the next. Again, they have this on film (3 games) it's the only return we run and I have 2 back up returners in the game expecting an onside and we have not returned a kick in 19 games. I was the last to expect this to go to the house. Well, game ends and their coach gives me a very cold shoulder. Their fans are heckling me, etc. Thier reporter comes to me and interviews me and says nothing about running it up. On Monday I get an article sent to me from our opponents press that absolutley SLAMS me and my program. All the details are wrong! They said we played 1's while the other school subbed. False, we subbed 2 series before they did. We never threw after clock ran, we never ran misdirection and our KR was scored with back ups and again they have on film and it's the only one we run and it has not been all that successful. Furthermore, due to earlier onside never even thought we had a shot at a return. The article was so blatantly false and biased it brought me to only 1 conclusion. You know what's in your heart and what your intentions are. You cannot control opponents perceptions. I would never throw the ball in a blowout. I will always sub when the game is out of hand as best I can but I will also protect my players from here on out when the other guy isn't ready to hang it up (hence the 4th down conversion). If your heart has good intentions than screw the rest of it because as I learned, the other side will see it how they want to see it. Sports elicit too many emotions for all stakeholders to be rational. Sometimes parents, coaches and unfortunately even biased reporters will see what they want to see. I know what we intended and our intentions were pure. I'm proud of our performance and have learned after this experience to not concern myself with the other side.

You could sub our name on your post and it would be almost the same as what happened earlier in the season with us. I'll follow coach hueys post on guidelines earlier in this thread and like you, will know I was as fair as possible while looking out for safety with our kids.

Until half time, foot on the gas regardless of score.
Second half, if you clearly have the game in hand, (1) get out the studs out before one gets hurt, and (2) get the kids in that need the varsity experience to help the team later in the season or next season.
Play calling, with back ups in, run exactly what you would if trying to score with the first team, except for deep balls.
If the other coach starts sending the house against the back ups, a screen or 3 step pass is not out of line.
