"Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose" - Eric Taylor I know, I know. It's from a TV show and Eric Taylor is a fictional coach. I just love the saying. I also like "Play Hard. Play Smart. Play TOGETHER." Not sure where I heard that one. HATE that quote...haha.. because the last guy I worked with (before I left coaching..probably for good this time) basically "learned" to coach from that show. It was not a pleasurable season.

From the book, "Our Boys" about the football team in Smith Center, Kansas...."Things disappear a lot quicker than it takes you to build them up." Roger Barta Head Football Coach Smith Center HS I just read that book a few weeks ago. Great read. I was annoyed every now and then by what seemed like overconfidence on the coaching staff's part, but I guess it turned out to be well-deserved!

This isn't necessarily real inspirational but I love it:
I heard a sports reporter talk about interviewing a star relief pitcher who'd lost a game the night before by giving up a HR in the 9th inning. The reporter asked the pitcher his thoughts. The pitcher replied, "Let me tell you how it is. I throw the ball as hard as I can. If he hits it he hits it. There's nothing that I can do."
Isn't that the essence of competition? I take my best shot and the other guy takes his. May the best man win.

I like reading quotes..have quite a bit of them in a word file
"There are two kinds of success. There’s success in your own eyes and there’s success in the eyes of other people. If you want to feel successful in your own eyes, you gotta feel satisfies with your life, satisfied with your accomplishments. That’s success.” -Red Auerbach
“I always say to my guys, ‘The most important day of your life is today. This very moment is the most important minute of your life. You must win this minute. You must win this day. And tomorrow will take care of itself.”- John Chaney
“Success to me is the satisfaction of knowing that I’ve been prepared, I’ve done absolutely everything I could do that’s in my control to be prepared. And I guess part of success is being committed to enjoying the process.”-Anne Donovan
“I would define success as doing the absolute best that you are capable of doing. That’s not the same as winning every game—it’s being as good as you could possibly be.”- Tony Dungy
“I look at what impact you as a person have in society. And when the people that I directly influence go out and influence other people for positive and good, I think success had been accomplished.” - Dan Gable
“Being the best you can be, regardless of what it is that you do. And a person needs to be passionate about what they do because that’s the only way you’re going to be happy: if you have a passion for what you do.” - Luke Olson:\
"My definition of success would hinge more on doing the best you can with what you have. Having good character, a good work ethic, integrity. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you make a lot of money or that you ever attain a position of power.” -Tom Osborne
“I would say that success is never final. No matter what you achieve, you’ve gotta move forward. It’s gotta be onward and upward because it’s not final. You can go from being pretty successful to pretty downtrodden and you can do it very quickly, particularly in this business.”- Bill Parcells
“To me it’s the satisfaction within each individual that they’ve given their best effort. That you did all you could. You did the right thing. You felt like in your heart, in your mind, in your soul, that you have done your best.”- Tubby Smith
“To me, success is getting the most out of your ability. It’s being able to go past that wall where you feel tired and frustrated. And once you go beyond that wall I think there’s a great deal of pride involved. Life isn’t easy and if you just sit down when you get tired instead of pushing on, then I don’t think you ever realize satisfaction and self-esteem.” -Joe Torre
“Success is progress. It’s becoming better at what you do. That’s what I always emphasize with the players, that if you can improve your skills and take advantage of it, that’s success. I don’t necessarily measure it in winning and losing, although that’s always a factor. But if you’ve improved, that’s success.” -Bill Walsh
The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender."....Vince Lombardi
* "Once you agree on a price you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent's pressure, and temporary failures."...Vince Lombardi
* "Recipe for having friends: be one."....Elbert Hubbard
* "Appreciative words are the most powerful force for good on earth!"...George W Crane
* "I always felt that in order for a team to win you have to make the weakest link strong." ....Oscar Robertson
* "Michael played hard, but all players play hard. The difference was he outcompeted people. That's a rare trait. You can't just play hard, you have to compete hard. There is a great difference."....Kelvin Sampson
* "One night, my son Alan, then eleven, was watching the Bulls play the Magic. He leaned over to my wife and said, 'Michael doesn't have any tattoos, does he? I like that."...written by Pat Williams in HOW TO BE LIKE MIKE.
* When there is a hill to climb, don't think that waiting will make it smaller."... unknown
* "To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is unacceptable."...author unknown Well done is better than well said......Ben Franklin
"Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently"...Henry Ford
"The man who wins may have been counted out several times, but he didn't hear the referee"....H.E. Jansen
Everything comes to him who waits, if he WORKS while he waits.
When you're through improving, you're through.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
You are not learning anything when you're talking, since you are merely repeating what you already know - you learn only by listening.
Your success can and will be just as tremendous as you THINK it can and should be.
"It's not whether you get knocked down. It's whether you get up again"...Vince Lombardi
"If you have tried to do something but couldn't, you are far better off than if you had tried to do nothing and succeeded"...John Ragland, Jr.
The race is not always won by the fastest runner but sometimes by those who just keep on running.
"You miss 100% of the shots you never take"...Wayne Gretzky -Most battles are won before they are fought. –Sun Tzu -Leadership must be demonstrated, not announced.-Fran Tarkenton -When you are a hammer everything looks like a nail.—unknown -Develop a love for details. What we do with it is our gift to God. -You never know how a horse will pull until you hook him to a heavy load.—Bear Bryant -If you sacrifice early, you’ll win late.—Charles Haley -The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.—Lombardi -You don’t develop good teeth by eating mush. -You can’t make a great play until you do it first in practice.—Chuck Noll -To be satisfied with yourself is a sure sign that all forward motion is about to stop. -What you get for free costs too much.—Jean Annouilh -I see no virtue where I see no sweat.—Francis Quarles -Practice without improvement is meaningless.—Chuck Noll -Learn to do things right, then do them right every time.—Bob Knight -One man without courage makes a majority.—Andrew Jackson -Take pride in yourself. A couple of my favorites that I have included on our scouting report covers:
“If you want to be successful, its just this simple. Know what you are doing. Love what you are doing. Believe in what you are doing” - Will Rogers
“True success can be attained only through self-satisfaction in knowing that you did everything within the limits of your ability to become the very best that you are capable of becoming” - John Wooden
"Most often, you can take the best team and the worst team and line them up and you would find very little physical difference, You would find an emotional difference. The winning team has a dedication. It will have a core group of veteran players who set the standards. They will not accept defeat“ - Merlin Olson
"On every team, there is a core group that sets the tone for everyone else. If the tone is positive, you have half the battle won. If it is negative, you are beaten before you even walk out on the field". - Chuck Noll
“In the end, it is attention to detail that makes all the difference. It’s the center fielder’s extra to steps to the left, the salesman's memory for names, the lover’s phone call, the soldier's clean up. It is the thing that separates the winners from the losers, the men from the boys, and very often, the living from the dead. Professional success depends on it, regardless of the field.” -David Noonan
