I am pretty impressed with this kid.. not just for his on field accomplishments.. but for his track accomplishments.. plus he is just a pretty dang good kid.. I dont know him personally.. but I did speak with him briefly at the regional track meet his freshmen year. He seemed like a very humble kid.. and was a yes sir no sir kind of kid.. As a sophomore in what I considered to be a pretty vanillia offense.. (I guess others did too, they have a new coach this year) he had 181 carries, 1334 yards, 18 TDs. He did not take over as the full time starter until after week 5.. he older brother was the starter before that.. He has a bench max of 390lbs. He did 315lbs on the bench for 7 reps.. Did 185lbs 28 reps.. On the track he was timed FAT at 10.45 at the regional track meet. He later pulled a hamstring in the 200m and was not able to fully compete at the state meet. On a side note.. his high school produce Kevin Mawea and Cecil Collins. Yall are gonna think Im a bit weird for this.. but where I actually got the thought of saying the "pimp" word was from watching  American Idol.. and they would always say that the first person to perform was given the pimp spot.. meaning the show put them in that spot to highlight them.. sorry.. didnt mean to ruffle your feathers.. (I cant believe Im apologizing for this) |

hip hop culture ? is this a racial issue ? it sure sounds like it. nothing to do with race i don't like the primacy that the hip hop culture places on superficial things like bling/ice etc validating these things will lead us into a world where superficial things are looked at more than what really matters mlk had it right when he said to look at a man's character and their accomplishments race has nothing to do with my comments trying to pull kids out of this "yo yo dog" way of thinking and lifestyle and seeing the value of work ethic and things that really do matter mean a lot to me how many kids have you talked to about going on job interveiws or going off to college and just the appearance? or how they present themselves? i talk to a lot of them about it all the time there is a professional way to act in this country and if the kids i work with (many are part "urban underworld") understand this, then i have helped make them a better citizen and person just the term "urban underworld" implies that there is something wrong, something illicit about the whole thing terms like pimp getting hype tight all have negative origins to perpetuate them in some attempt to sound cool or hip legitimizes their roots and the illegal and immoral values of those roots words mean things |

good way to beat around the bush TOG you should run for office i mean exactly what i say i am about the last person you want to accuse what you are implying and i don't appreciate it hip hop culture has transcended any kind of racial boundaries if you are so indignant on trying to imply that someone is racist instead of actually reading their posts, then it sounds like you are the one that has read into my posts some sort of racial bias of your own i have worked at schools with over 80% minorities and i see this the kids that know what is appropriate and where in terms of how they can tone down their "attitude" and "keepin it real" are the kids that generally end up doing something with value and meaning in their lives the ones that don't? it doesn't necessarily mean that they will end up in jail or anything it just really limits their chances of doing much of anything in a professional setting and thus the cycle of poverty is extended it is something that needs to be broken it is something that crosses all color barriers if you have read enough of my stuff on here for the last few years you would know that i care about kids and want them to succeed wearing their hats sideways and not being able to speak proper english in the right places will not help them with this falling into the trappings of the get rich quick mentality that so much of hip hop generates is a pitfall that ALL coaches should be fighting against every day what is all the talk of work ethic and sacrifice for? do you talk about these things? i don't see how talking about these important things and 99% of hip hop culture are congruent in the least therefore i don't like it and do my best to let kids know when it is appropriate and to encourage them to enjoy the music they like,but to do some critical thinking about what and why the music is aimed at them and what the music truly represents |

Tog was just saying that we as coaches shouldnt use terms such as "pimping" when refering to athletes because we should be trying to get them from saying such things themselves.

what makes you think he isnt a good citizen ? is becuase of the skin color ? read what i wrote help him be an awesome citizen where does this state that I or anyone thought that he wasn't? it is our jobs to help ALL kids become awesome citizens airraider only mentioned the kid's athletic acheivements you are the one that keeps bringing race into this and in a negative way sounds like you are the one with the issue |

Let me clear this up real quick.. this kid does not play for me.. I wish he did.. but he doesnt.. he plays at Leesville High in Louisiana.. Im not sure which all schools are on him. He really just now broke out this past year. So he is just now starting to get noticed. I do know that LSU is on him pretty hard because we all know how bad off they are at running back right now.. haha |

i know airraider didn't intend to go THIS route, but this be about as good a time as any to address this.....so here goes.
how much do we, as coaches, reinforce the "American Idol" mentality in kids when it comes to football?
The 'free-lunch' mentality of the be-all-end-all/cure-everything approach to 1) college scholarships 2) record deals 3) lottery ticket
Like all I have to do is get that scholarship, and now everything in my life is fine......................like I just won the lottery.
I think, personally, I have seen this more and more over the years...
"coach, coach.....I am a DI prospect (5'7" 175lbs slow DT)!! You guys need to tell the colleges about me.....I need more game film to show these schools...."
This sells the sport in a completely different light. The "next level" is all about replacing the current stud with a new stud......personalities and lives be damned. This game will eat coaches, parents, players up like a meat-grinder, you're not promised tomorrow (or the next play)........thats life. Those starters and studs you see on Saturday don't get there just by showing up, no matter how easy they can make it look.
Also, it reinforces the SELF-GRATIFICATION something this game really isn't meant for.
To hell with the team, fundamentals, hard work, etc, so long as I get my " yards, tackles, game film, scholarship"
There is a very cold and lonely realization awaiting those that play this game for themselves, or just out of what they can get out of it.....they will eventually wake up to the fact that the game has used them up and spit them out. After that, the stage of denial that few come out of is blaming OTHERS for their perceived short-comings (coach so-and-so screwed me out of this scholarship, depth chart, yards, etc). Ever see those "American Idol Confessionals" after a horrible singer, convinced they are otherwise, is booted from the show? Thats the exact same thing you will hear from our athletes......like they were entitled to a scholarship, but the coach / AD / scheme screwed them out of it.
The main thing is the main thing - take care of whats important, and the scholarship / opportunities will be there (GPA, SAT, Community involvement, measureables, etc). Somehow we treat football scholarships different than science, band, art scholarships....like everything schools look for in awarding those type of offers has no relevance in football, so long as you can run fast, we'll give you a deal. It doesn't work that way.
Secondly, do some coaches further hurt the kids by acting like those vicarious mothers on American Idol? Always trying to get face time with the 'buyers' in the market...."but you've just GOT to see Billy....he is the next ____". Regardless of what the kid is really like?
I know this isn't as sexy as calling someone a racist, but it is a good opportunity to maybe discuss decorum in the profession.

Tog 100% right.
I coached Inner City Youth for 9 years. Cant stand coaches that reinforce thugness and attitudes that will not help the kids succeed later in life. Yo yo dog baloney. Coaches that actually use that type of language, dude, bra, pimp, bling bling etc etc and act like little wanna-be kids or gangsters with sideways caps, do rags, rolled up pant legs etc. Kids dont need more misguided "friends" they need leadership. Popularity does not equal leadership.
