I am going to make a job change. I have been coaching Offensive Line at a Division III college for the past 3 years. I decided that it was time to move on. I have pretty much accepted a job at a High School. Now the deal is that it is about a 25 to 30 minute drive. It's all Interstate and 4 lane the whole way until you actually get to the town. Anyways, how far do you guys commute to work? Gas prices are soaring right now, but I drive about as much with having to drive downtown in stop and go traffic and make the recruiting trips every now and then. I also had to teach parttime at a middle school for some extra money. So other than gas prices, what are some disadvantages?

Home to coaching, about 10-15 minutes. As far as disadvantages, the farther it is, the more of a pain the drive becomes, which I suppose could impact your zeal for the experience.

I drive 5 miles to my teaching job, then 20 miles one way to my coaching job at another high school. Then it is 15 miles back home after practice. A combination of 2 lane country roads and 4 lane Interstate highway.

dubyah, my first head job I commuted about that far.
Only disadvantage really was couldn't go home, had time to kill between Two-a-day practices.
Driving up for weekend meetings was a pain but that's true regardless of time and distance.
If you're going to celebrate or commiserate post-game in town with some adult beverages, you'll need a DD or a place to lay over.

My first year in Northern VA, I lived about 35 miles away from teaching/coaching, but it took 1.5 hours EACH WAY. Needless to say, 3 hours in the car every day was not the way I wanted to spend my life so I moved and now have a 5 minute commute to teaching and 20 back home from coaching (got a new coaching gig w the same teaching job).

From home to coaching job right now is a 3 minute bike ride. About 2 blocks away... not too bad. I can be home before they turn the scoreboard off (or before the parents know I left) after the game.

Right now, my drive is 15-2O minutes depending on which of the two schools I sub for. I coach for the school that's closer to fifteen minutes away. The last time I had fulltime teaching employment, I was driving 5O minutes one way and it was too much for me. I think about 25-3O minutes would be the max for me now that I've experienced a commute further than that. BTW, I live in the "sticks" so if a school is 25-3O miles away from me...that means it will take 25-3O minutes for me to get there

I get to work at 0530 so I can leave at 1400 to get to school by 1500 so I can be at practice which starts at 1530.
My house to work - 13 miles, about 15 minutes, very early so no traffic Work to school - 38 miles, about 45-55 minutes, before commute, so usually no or light traffic School to home - 25 miles, about 30 minutes, after commute so no traffic
Total miles - 76, all over CA Bay Area freeways.
Not planned out like this, but moving and work and family put it into this situation.

About 30 minutes. Can be 35 or so, depending on how I hit the two red lights I pass through. Mostly rural two lane roads. 22.9 miles one way.

The best thing about having some separation between where you live and where you work is that you won't be living in a fishbowl. You don't have to worry that a parent or kid will see you coming out of a liquor store or out on a date or whatever.

Right now 2 miles!!! My first 2 years here I was driving about 30 min each way. I enjoy living across town from the high school.
I have 2 assistants that do not live in our community and one drives 9 miles each way and the other drives 18 miles each way.

Having a little bit of a drive home can allow you to debrief some too, not all bad so long as the drive itself isn't stressful.
Right now I go 18 miles (20-21 minutes) one way. 25-30 minutes would be my limit.

I am the HC at an 8A school in FL, NW of Orlando. I live 40 minutes away in a town with one light, right next to McDonald's. I live on a lake and my kids swim in it year round. No one in town asks why we never throw or why we don't run cover 2, LOL.
It is the reason I love my job!

All 1 way: Job 0- 10 minutes/30 minutes. Was in college and depended on whether I had class and in the dorm or was crashing at a buddy's house. 2 seasons
Job 1- 25-35 minutes, in town 4 lane/highway. Depended on whether everybody in my neighbor hood was leaving at the same time. The anti commute: lived down town and worked in the burbs. 4 seasons
Job 2- 40 minutes. 4 lane (eventually) country road. Drove past 4 high schools on the way to work. 4 seasons.
Job 3- 75 minutes. Mostly interstate. Daughter thought the wife and I were divorced b/c she had a classmate that only got to see her father Saturdays and that was the only time she saw me. 2 seasons.
Job 3a- >10 minutes. 2 lane. Same job, different house. Moved b/c of the phone call I got about the above. 4 seasons and counting.

I live on one side of town and coach/teach on the complete opposite end of town. It is about a 20-25 minute drive.

25 minutes to work in the am 8 minutes to coaching job 15 minutes to get home
use to drive total of 40 minutes for 8 years to coach at a JC - the rings made it worthwhile...

5 minutes to work (because of a 3 minute unavoidable stoplight).
Then, to coach (I work out of the building), I drive 10 minutes (past my apartment). Then 5 minutes back home after practice. My apartment is directly between them.
Can't complain. Heck, if I coached at our conference rivals I'd have 4-5 minutes max between work and the school, and that would be because I'd have to cross a busy road. One nice thing about living in heavily populated suburbs, could coach at a lot of places and still be within 30-40 minutes.

I live about 50 minutes away.. the other day I even had to go home after school and then come back for our athletic banquet...
The pay sucks, but the perks of a private school make it worth it!

last year it was an hour. one way. split with 2 other buddies though. Great opportunity but i will never do that again. spending more than 2 hours a day driving while youre working on a degree is not ideal.
Now its 15-20 mins. stay on a freeway and then a lil bit of country roads. fill my tank every other week. much nicer.
I'd say 40 mins would be absolute max. 30 mins would be ideal max. if that makes sense

I drive 45 min west to teach 1/2 time at a private school in the city. I drive 1.5 hrs east afterschool to coach at a public school in the suburbs. The other 1/2 days, I split time substituting in the district that I coach and another district which is 20 min away from where I coach. I live 20 min away from where I coach (yet another district where I neither teach nor coach).
Sound complicated? Yes, but it's only a month longer. Hoping to get a f/t teaching position where I coach, but we'll see what happens.

15 minutes one way...if there is a car in front of me it's a traffic jam. 6 potential stops (signs or lights) total (one way).

live 2 blocks from current school, so about 1 minute.
however, just took a diff hc job and commute will go to around 25-30 minutes. but a big bump in pay will cover those miles

I travel 42 miles one way to school which takes about 50 minutes. During the season it isn't too bad you have time to reflect on practice before you get home. I stay at the school after games on Friday, don't see areason to drive home and then get up early to drive back. If you have kids the drive does end up costing you time with them during the season. I only get to see them Sat. and Sun.

Normally it's about 45-60 minutes during rush hour. That's the biggest disadvantage. It takes forever to get there and back. Snow is ridiculous. It's taken up to 2 hours before. I don't mind the gas prices too much because the alternative is moving to a crummy area where I'd lose more in property value and quality of life, but the perfect situation in my mind would be working in a nice city and walking to work every day. No lawn, no traffic, no gas... sounds like heaven, but I've never done it, so I'm sure there are a lot of down sides I'm not considering.
