How many of you require your coaches or are required to wear certain clothing to practice? I know as teachers, we are required to dress a certain way and was just wondering how that carries over onto the practice field for you.

I required my coaches to wear something that promoted our program whenever they are on the field. I also required that they don't wear anything that promotes other programs when they are working with our players.
I've had two young coaches over the years break this and sent both of them home to get their stuff.
I actually had to let one go after the season because he just couldn't buy into what we were selling our kids. TEAM.
I coached for 26 years and 20 of them as a HC. If I went back today I wouldn't change this. AND no cell phones on the field.

What if they wore a college shirt not one from your HS program?

I always require my staff guys to wear something. I never put much attention on it, and I've never had any trouble with it. I've had my staff guys wearing all kind of colors and stuff, but they certainly know better than wear a rivals colors or logo. If they did they'd take alot of flack from us old guys. But I'm constantly buying team stuff myself anyway, so I have lots of stuff. My last team, I always wore team colors myself, so my guys usually did too. Never even though about it. Sometimes, I wish they'd wash it more often though. Lots of stories about that. Usually though, things settle in and guys wear the same things after a while. Year ago, when I started out, I always wanted to wear my coaching clothes. It was an honor to get out there and I was excited about it, so I always had my colors on. We were red and white Jackson Tigers. As a staff member, I can't even remember somebody being a jerk and wearing a rival's gear. So it's not something I've seen much. OJW

No dress code for us. All of the coaches dress how they feel but they always have on team gear. I never said they had to wear it but I guess they get it for free so that might encourage them.

We just have an unspoken dress code to never wear our coaches shirts out or anything with the school name when we get together and hit a bar or two. No need to give anyone ammo to hurt our program

I'd say you need to be in something you can move in. Theres no way you could demonstrate a proper 3 pt stance in a pair of slacks. I agree with not promoting other programs though, whether they be rival or college/NFL

I have no problem wearing certain gear on the practice field. If it is a mandatory uniform then I would expect it to be provided to me for free.

For practice we don't really have a dress code, just so long as it's not wildly inappropriate. We're the only program in our area at our division for two hours in any direction, so you either went there, went to a totally unrelated school or come from way out of town, nobody went to any of our competition's schools.
For games, it's khaki pants, or khaki shorts when the weather turns our crappy turf field into a solar oven, and a school-related top. This dress code falters a bit as the season goes on into some nasty weather and we don't have school parkas.

We don't have a dress code but generally we all understand that we should wear team stuff. We have some guys who are newer on the staff and may not have the array of gear that a veteran coach has. We also have non-faculty guys who sometimes have to come to the field right from work. Games, of course, are different. We're definitely expected to wear team stuff. We had a guy get fired right off of the sideline for showing up dressed too "gangsta". Turned out that he orchestrated it-young guy who realized that he was in deeper than he wanted but didn't want to quit.

We don't have a dress code for practice, but most of us wear team gear anyway. No one ever where's gear with other high school logo's on it. Some will wear stuff with college logo's sometimes but I don't see a problem with this.

Our practice attire is a mix of team gear/colors, college alma maters (UC Davis, Berkeley, SJSU, etc), and work attire (we have a professional musician, a contractor, a PO, and a plastics salesman on staff, amongst others). But all of our coaches 'get it' and you won't see anyone inadvertently wearing rival colors (yellow/black or black/red).

We have a nice relationship- we hate them, they hate us. Most of is don't even own anything red.

Long time coach in the state, won several championships, always wore the opponents shirt/sweatshirt during practice. He would have his scouts buy a tshirt/sweatshirt when they were there.
That might be only time I have ever heard of a coach wearing a rival's stuff.

We always had one rule at football practice, even for players.
No "Eat at Al's" Tshirts!

OJW That's kind of interesting... During our "rivalrly week," we have a tradition of wearing our opponent's colors, mascot, etc. We make it a point to get t-shirts, hats, whatever. It's part of our tradition, and it fires the kids up. But, they understand that it is not done out of disrespect. They know that it's one of our silly coaching traditions (like wearing Hawaiian shirts to first day of hitting), but the real purpose is to draw focus to that team. We also pipe in the rival's "fight song" (if it is adapted from a college song and we can get it on CD) into the locker room during the whole week. One year, we hooked it up to the sound system on the field and played it on "repeat" during our pre-game practice. I always thought it was a cool tradition.

First off if a HC told me I had to dress a particular way it would be a deal breaker. I'd choose to work somewhere else. I'd question the priorities of the coach who wanted to play dress up with me.
When it is warm I wear khaki cargo shorts to practice and usually a team tshirt. Same with underclass games. Varsity games I wear the coaches' shirt that the booster club got for us. Four years ago they got itchy shirts and I chose not to wear it ever. When it gets cold I wear team sweat pants and a team hoodie. At no time do I ever wear khaki pants or dress shoes.
I wear team gear every Friday to school year round. I wear team gear to the weight room. I LIKE wearing team gear.
At practice overall it is a mix of team gear, college gear, and sometimes just random "this is what I had today" clothes.
One of my fondest coaching memories is wearing jeans to a game where the opposing coach said "We will never lose to a team whose coaches wear jeans" and then having to take knees the entire second half to avoid violating our maximum victory point margin rule...

Dress code at practice? No. Common sense at practice? Yes. I expect my assistants to wear appropriate coaching gear (i.e. no jeans) but I don't give a sh-t past that.
As an HC, I've got too much on my plate to play fashion Nazi at practice. Why the hell would I run a practice short handed because I sent my assistant home to get his "school colors" on? IMO, he's "promoting" the program a whole lot more by being there COACHING then making sure his attire shows school spirit.

at practice, wear what you wear as long as it is appropriate and does not stop you from preforming your duties as a coach and instructor( if you have to get down in a stance to show a player how to do it right, you better be able to get down there)

I am an AC at a program and our HC makes us wear program stuff. A suggestion from an AC though to any HC reading this, if you want your staff to wear it, provide it for them. When the weather gets cold, gym shorts and a T-Shirt do not cut it so dont get upset when we layer up.

As long as they provide me with it (and enough of it) I don't care quite frankly what I'm told to wear. If I'm not required to wear it, I'll probably end up buying some of the stuff.
If I'm new to a school and you tell me I have to wear a camp or team t-shirt, I would expect to be provided with more than one.

Besides salaries for the week, I buy coaches pullover or jacket, hat, polo with summer camp money. They also get camp T-shirt if they work it, T-shirt and mesh shorts with pockets from fund raiser, and playoff Tee if we qualify. If we have balance at end of season I buy them sweatshirt or hoodie.
I don't tell them what to wear at practice, just that I believe kids will respect us more and thus listen-respond better if we look "professional."

Yeah, the two guys on the left won about 350 games combined. The guy on the far left was my head coach, friend and mentor Ed Bolin who passed away in 2002 from cancer linked to his service in Viet Nam. I still miss him every day.
