Maybe it is one of my pet peeves, but I notice there are some posters out there in internet football land that state how to do things as the only way to do things.
Does this annoy you?

We all come across that way at times, maybe not intentionally so. It is ok when people get excited about talking about what they do or like, its just the
"the position player must never do such and such" when answering a question by someone about some kind of play. I try to always add a "we think" or a "what we do" in there before I say any kind of absolutes that make it sound like smart ass know it all talk.

Yes we are all guilty of such things as that, I think that you hit it on the head tog, we should insert the "we think's or the What we do's" so they will know that you are not coming off as arrogant or that you feel your way is the only way!

pet peeve of mine is those cliches people spit out there with no statistical evidence to back it up.....
"can't run the ball from the spread"........or whatever yet offer no proof of this
you know...the "myths" of the game that get perpetuated from years gone by and still kept alive
....name dropping also gives me a laugh

Pet peeve on football discussion boards goes something like this: Initial message in a new thread: “WHAT IS THE BEST OFFENSE TO RUN” BY “newcoach” Coaches, I need some help. I have xyz type of offensive linemen and abc types of backs and receivers. My QB is average. What type of offense should I run?? You inevitably will get these types of replies… REPLY BY “airassultcoach” Coach, spread ‘em out 5-wide and throw the ball 55 times per game. You can’t possibly hope to win with xyz type of offensive linemen and abc types of backs and receivers if you run any other style of offense. Run 3, 5, and 7 step drops. Have at least 30 screen plays in your package. Running the ball is boring and for idiots. Join the 21st century and let’s go!! Hey, if you want information on what I do, email me at arrogantmoron@xyz.com and maybe we can trade or something. I’m always looking for 3-3-5 stuff! REPLY BY “oldschoolinsession” Coach, the only hope you have of surviving is running my combination double wing / straight-T offense. This will help hide all of the inadequacies you have on your OL and make up for your less talented backs and receivers. Besides, any other type of run offense is for sissies and cheaters. I run real man’s football!! So, swallow that chew and wash it down with some moonshine, because you can’t be a real man unless you run this stuff. Last year we averaged 3985734987 rusing yards per game because defenses don’t know how to stop my superior offense! I had 3 RB’s over 5000 yards. We outscored our opponents 8472501767647 to 2 over the last two seasons since we put this in!! Hey, if you want information on what I do, email me at everythingofftackle@abc.com and maybe we can trade or something. I’m always looking for 3-3-5 stuff! REPLY BY “delewaredeciple” Coach…please listen to me. You feel empty and helpless right now. I know how that can feel. You feel like your xyz type of offensive linemen and abc types of backs and receivers are making your existence empty and meaningless. We all feel that way at some point in our lives. I was this way a long time ago. Running a pro-I offense with a standard power / draw oriented running game and a west-coast style passing game caused me to think long and hard about “is this all there is to my existence?” Then I stumbled onto www.bucksweep.com and my life has changed so much. I am a devout member of the Wing-T community. Join us, my friend, and you can discuss OVER AND OVER again such topics as: “What is better, the Buck Sweep or the ROCKET Sweep!?!?!” “Slipping the FB out on your 128 Down Pass” “Running the Jet into the Boundary-Good or BAD?” and “Is the Jet REALLY different from the Fly?” These topics will give your life meaning again. Running this offense will make you a member of a larger and more meaningful community. Join us, my son. You will see the light. Hey, if you want information on what I do, email me at Iaminacult@123.com and maybe we can trade or something. I’m always looking for 3-3-5 stuff! REPLY BY “UrbanMyerRULZ” I’m telling you dawg…spread ‘em out and run that sweet option shotgun with your QB and your RB. Put a Mike Vick at QB and have your running game all go out of the sick shotgun! It’s totally whack! I’m getting all shizzled up just thinking about reading that backside end and deciding to give it to the back or have the QB keep it. It’s tha bomb! And, you can floss and fly that ball all over that mofo to your receivers too. It’s ILL dawg! Hey, if you want information on what I do, email me at Iaminacult@123.com and maybe we can trade or something. I’m always looking for 3-3-5 stuff! Anyway, that’s my pet peeve. I hope some of you found that amusing. I guess I just hate when people try to “sell a system” to someone else rather than ask the right kind of questions and really figure out what the poor guys needs are.

uh....oh.....calling people out now....
I agree, though. This is a game invented by PhysEd Majors - it CAN'T be that hard.
One thing I think (in life in general) is to remain flexible. There is more than a dozen ways to do it the 'right' way....and let's face it - if you run a defense with 10 defensive linemen and 1 Dback....as long as you WIN, it's the "right" defense to run....
I don't believe any offense/ defense is bullet proof and I think anyone that sells their 'system' as such are only fooling themselves.

I hope everyone realizes that I was just trying to be funny there and was certainly not aiming that at any particular individuals. I was trying to throw up some funny stereotypes...!! ;D I think us offensive guys are far and away the worst at trying to sell people our systems. Defensive guys are always more confrontational. They are always saying "yeah, well MY defense would NEVER allow such a poorly designed play to gain yardage!! My guys run my defense to perfection on every play, and there are no weaknesses!! No matter what you say, I'm going to have an answer that makes you feel like a fool!! MMMWWWAAAAA HAAA HAAHA!! (evil laugh)... It's kind of weird isn't it? I mean, it's nice to totally believe in a system and everything, but why do we care what other people run? It's almost like a weird obsessive thing with some coaches. They want everyone to believe in and run what they run. I for one think it would be a pretty boring world if everyone ran the same thing.

Personally I want everyone I play to run the same stuff and everyone they play to run the same stuff. That way when they face us it is a total bastard they have to prepare for in 1 week.
This year I face variations of the Urban Meyer Offense 6 times. The first time we struggled, but boy did we get better at it each week. I don't want to be different just to be different either, it has to fit my philosophy as a coach or I will not do it.

LOL -- What a riot... great post (and scary how accurate it is). I understand we have to thoroughly believe in a system, then teach and SELL it to our players, but when discussing these packages with other coaches, why do some coaches continue the 'hard sell'? I don't think they see this, but it honestly makes them come across as looking a bit... ummm... limited. ;-) 'email me at Iaminacult@123.com' - LOL - I still can't stop chuckling.

THe scary thing is how true that post really was. Now for those of us who come across a bit more humble, we find it hard to get heard over the loud mouthed idiots out there. In some cases, however, there are good guys with good ideas who just are a little over zealous about their stuff. (Steve...I know you're listening) They mean well however, and often actually have some good stuff to say once they calm down a bit. Of course, it does sting a bit when you see some elements of yourself in there. *wincing* Though I do try to keep some humility, and admit I don't know everything about everything, if you don't think that you are damn good at what you do, you probably shouldnt be coaching.

Football is a game of blocking and tackling. I think ones "system" reflects his personality.
Any system will work as long as the coaches and players buy into it.
I coach in a small school (about 120 in HS), and our style of players go through cycles.
when the "big boys" are varsity players, we may have to line up and run over you. When the "big boys leave" and the "little quick guys" get in school, we will have to do something different.
Very rarely do you have size and speed both in a school my size.
Learn all you can, you never know when you may have to use it.
As a result, I have used Wishbone, Spread, single wing, Triple I, Wing T, and double slot in the past 20 years.
