We have 5 weeks left in the seasons....
Coach I am quitting because I have to get a job. This kid also wrestles and it starts as soon as football is over. We ask where he is going to get a job for 5 weeks he told us that McDonalds needs part time help. He proceeded to tell us he thought that means part time during the year and you could come and go as you please. After we explained what part time really meant.....he quit anyways...

we had a pretty good one a while ago, we had played a subvarsity game against a team of mostly black kids and we were mostly white, well this kid is playing safety, and apparently during the game he was using the N word freely. We didn't hear it at the time but the opposing coaches told us about it. So we called the kid in the next day and told him "now look _____ what you did was wrong, we're willing to keep you on the team, but you're going to run 20,000 yards....break it up however you want to, but you're not practicing again until you run every yard of it".....kid looks at us....thinks for a second....then gets out of his chair, shakes our hands...and says "nah...I don't think I wanna do that, I'll just get kicked off the team...see ya 'round".....

I coach community football here in Canada, and we see the same thing regarding former players wearing team clothing. It's particularly funny when you see 13 year olds still wearing the team t-shirt they were given at age 10. It's worn out, FAR too small, but they still wear it. When I see them at the bus stop, etc., it's all I can do not to stop the car and tell them that all they have to do is show up for Spring football in order to get a new one - they don't even have to make the team!

Years ago, after we had finished our mandatory no contact aclaimation day, we went out in full gear and after the warm up, had planned to get to knocking heads to see which dogs would hunt.
We had this ole country boy who was coming out for the first time. Ater about 20 minutes of the Oklahoma drills, we let the kids catch their breath and get some water. The coaches were standing off to the side commenting on what we thought about the drill and who had done well, and what not.
Well this ole boy ambles over to where we were standing and says, "Yall boys are fo' real, ain't 'cha?" We responded, "Yes". Then this ole boy says, "Well. I'm gonna take it to the house." And he preceeded to walk on back to the locker room.

I had a kid that quit this year after the first game because he didn't get to play. He expected me to beg him to stay on the team. We've won three games in a row since he's left. My smile says it all when I pass him in the hallway...

Man these are great! We have had a ton of kids quit for great stories and for stupid reasons.
1. We had a kid quit because he wasn't playing enough (sophomore who came out during doubles and missed all summer but STILL will not step up during scout team) He also blamed a back injury but the day he quit he was caught on camera wrestling with another student AND STEALING FROM THE FRESHMAN LOCKER ROOM!!!!!
2. We had a kid, a senior, who was forced to quit by his father to concentrate on his grades. The worst part about this was that the dad typed up a letter and pretended that the kid wrote it. When I asked the kid about it he just said "it was my dad" I feel pretty bad for this kid because he has busted his butt all off-season and for three years prior.
3. I cant tell you how many kids would quit when I played though just for the reason that they didnt even want to work hard at it. Kills me.

We had a kid yesterday come up to us coaches right after practice and told me he has decided to retire from football. Is there something wrong with me when I had to fight back laughing because a sophomore in high school tells me he is retiring from football? I had a young man tell me that hed wait until his senior year when he was "really good" and that right now he had to get his religious priorities and home life in order. well good for him.

Just had a senior quit 5 games into the season. I took over a program that was on a 4 1/2 year losing streak (36 games). We broke the streak in game 2 of the season, but are now 1-4 after playing 4 playoff teams from a year ago. This senior lost his starting FB job to a freshman; moved him to WB to give him a chance, lost his reps there after 2 games of watching him whiff blocks and not run hard... finally in game 5 (he started at Free safety too) he tells me he isnt' fast enough to get to QB or Pitch vs. option... I subbed him out. He quit today. Said he hated me and that i made him hate football. I must say I was disappointed, but football, high expectations and accoutability isn't for everybody.

Yeah coachhansen, some kids just can't hack it.
A parent wants to talk to me and the principal about why his kid is not playing and wants to quit. Same kid did not do workouts in the offseason. Missed 1/3 of training camp. Was injured (Broken knuckle punching a kid so could not practice) and often just sits in the back and goofs around during scrimmage.
I don't think the kid knows what he is doing and the fact he is short and overweight makes it hard to put him in. But when he gets the chance he does not jump at it. In the last game I was calling out to make sure everyone had played, he never came up, then after the game he is balling he didn't play...

I had a freshman (on a freshman team..) quit after two games; he was a 'starter', but rotated with three other TBs. His dad was keeping stats (carries, yards/game, yards/carry, etc...) and the kid told me that, (after looking at his 'stats')I was 'dissing his abilities'...

The Nordic ski thing is no joke. Had a guy I went to hs with great athlete would have started easily both ways. Came out and quit because he was better at skiing. He ended up going to the Olympics..... So I guess hs football vs olympics.. That's a no brainer we had a great hc who supported the kid big time it would have been easy to bag on him

We lost a Sr. yesterday, 4-year player. We're 5 games into our regular season, 6 weeks (bye & 5 games) left. Walks into the DC's classroom and says football was not fun for him anymore. Was a part-time starter, got lots of playing time, kind of perplexing.
Earlier this season a Soph. quit because he got a detention and his dad made him quit. HC tried to talk to the dad but he stood firm and the kid turned in his gear.
