We are doing a stay the night with our football team this friday. Any good ideas on good movies to show them. You think kids would like Invictus?

Remember the Titans, Facing the Giants or Invincible.

IMO Remember the Titans is by far the best
Friday Night Lights
The only reason I would hesitate with Invictus is that they may not understand the real importance behind the movie. It is a great movie, but there I think there are better football movies to show them

Not a fb movie, but MEN OF HONOR is very good and can be useful in teaching values that carry over to the fb field.

I'll second Miracle. Great story, but also a great movie.
Brian's Song if you want to tug some heartstrings. Or Rudy.

"Best of Times." Men of Honor is a great film, but the language in it would get me fired at my school.

I'm going to give a definitive thumbs down to "Facing the Giants". That movie gets really, really preachy really fast. If you're at a private school where it is acceptable or even encouraged to incorporate messages about faith, God, and religion into your program, then go ahead. As a teacher at public school and a believer in the separation of church and state, I wouldn't touch it. It turned me off quickly once it turned into an infomercial for Jesus, and I'd imagine a few of my players would feel the same way. To each his own though, and depending on the setting, it could certainly be a good message. We just finished up our lock-in last week and watched "Hoosiers". "Miracle" is also a great recommendation, and "Remember the Titans" is so good its almost cliche at this point, our kids have seen it a hundred times. We rattled around the idea of "Coach Carter" or "We Are Marshall" as well. A couple of the assistant coaches suggested "Varsity Blues" but the Head Coach nixed that. Can't imagine why. The other one that I thought about was "Rocky Balboa" (the latest one).

We are marshall, Remember the Titans followed up by some "Hardest hits" NFL clips. Those always get you amped up. Try some of the "Americas Game" shows from NFL network. Those are always good, especially the one on the 85 Bears. Watching that defense will make anyone wanna go hit somebody.

another idea if youre willin to stray from the football route, and if you can get away with an R rated movie, is Saving Private Ryan. Great story about sacrifice and the importance of each person in a unit.
one of my favorite things to say while coaching is "don't be the guy at the bottom of the stairs" referring of course to the pansy interpreter who finds himself too scared to run upstairs into a building to bring his buddies ammo and ends up gettin them killed. not enough people get that right away though.
Miracle is also a great suggestion, and so is Rocky. I think it'd be best to show the original one though. or Rocky IV. but thats just cuz thats my fave.

I agree that facing the giants is not one to show the kids - i live in the bible belt and our baptists were not happy that I didn't think it was appropriate to show the whole team.
there are so many movies that someone in the community would be against its a difficult choice. Even if most of the movie is great there might be one scene or even one line that someone would take the wrong way.

I like miracle. Not to get preachy but who cares if a parent gets offended. If the movie isnt rated R then deal with it. People act like its a crime if you offend them. You cannot make everyone happy and by trying to do so will only piss more off.

you might want to be concerned if a parent gets offended because they might decide you wont be coaching any more

I would love to meet the coach who can coach a whole year and not offend a parent or player. I have yet to see it. If your job is that hangs on what a parent thinks you dont have much security at all.

I showed the bear crawl scene in Facing the Giants to the team. Great scene. Will do it again. Empire Strikes Back. 5 min scene where Yoda lifts the Xwing fighter using the force. Luke says "I don't believe it" Yoda says "that's why you fail.". We showed that as example of you have to believe before you can accomplish great things.

Nights in with the team isn't something we do over here (in the UK) so much, but what about coming at it from real left field?
Personally if I was thinking what film I wanted to show a bunch of kids, I would be taking the chance to educate them in some real classics which have genuine weight and punch behind it....
Off the top of my head would be looking at something like Angels with Dirty Faces, maybe even Citizen Kane or It's a Wonderful Life.... 3 great films with a real powerful ending. I always forget how young some of our players are, and in fact whilst I think film X, Y or Z is the best thing ever, they haven't even heard of it; so rather than run the risk of showing them a film they've seen a hundred times, why not show em black and white doesn't mean old and rubbish!
Or get a real tear jerker, and just laugh as three quarters of your guys sob away, lol.

I like Miracle because it's about teamwork but isn't about football. They've been doing football all day. I agree that the kids have probably seen Titans many times.
Showing something overtly religious to a captive audience can indeed get you in trouble at a public school. I'd also be careful about R ratings.
Big Hits tapes do get them amped. Is that what you want at night at camp?

I have shown Rudy and Remember the Titans to kids but they have all seen the show so many times all they do is goof around during the movie and then I get ticked.
I would throw Miracle at them too, if some of them have seen it, it still would be a great team building movie to watch together.

We did a camp a little over two hours from here and took a charter bus. HC brought a bunch of movies he thought the players would like to watch and out of all of them the two they picked was Friday Night Lights and Remember The Titans. Radio came in a very close third and we ended up watching it because the damn DVD player wouldn'r read the Titans disk.
Pick out a handfull of movies you would like to show them and let them pick. I think you'll be surprised at which ones they choose. Oh and they sat in almost silence watching the movies instead of screwing around.

There's no telling what kind of crap they'll want to show.

You cannot make everyone happy and by trying to do so will only {censored} more off. Ordinarily I'd be first in line to agree with you. But we're not talking about playing time or practice schedules here. Why fight this battle if you know it'll rock the boat? Is it really worth it? (And I don't mean is Jesus worth it. I mean is showing the movie worth it. I suppose if one's a devout follower and has evidence that the movie "Facing the Giants" will lead instantly to eternal salvation, then go ahead. In lieu of of such evidence however...the movie ain't worth it.) Between playcalling, offensive scheme, defensive scheme, team meals, practice schedules, eligibility and playing time, I think I've got more than enough to worry about with regard to pissing people off. There's a difference between not being afraid of parents and flat out looking for a fight. However, every situation is different as is every community, so I'm sure it depends on the community. We did a camp a little over two hours from here and took a charter bus. HC brought a bunch of movies he thought the players would like to watch and out of all of them the two they picked was Friday Night Lights and Remember The Titans. I'd forgotten about that, which is sad, because I use it in my classroom all the time. I also like phantom's point about "they've done football all day" give them something different.

I think a lesser known film that is really good is "The Express" about ernie davis, good football and life story there as well.

A lot older, and not football, but a good watch, is Patton. Some ordeal and triumph, some messages about commitment and urgency, and some subtle messages about propriety, human dignity, and teamwork.

I played Cinderella Man for the team a few years ago. Most kids had not seen it and it got a round of applause at the end.
