greatest football movie of all time may be "horse feathers" but i'm not sure how many kids would enjoy the marx brothers. "coach, why is it black and white? is it broke?"

Something for Joey, the John Capelletti movie. Reminds us all what's really important and how blessed we are to be able to play the game.

I won't coach at a place that won't accept a move like Facing the Giants. We don't make movie time at our camp mandatory, so nobody has to be there. Funny thing though, we are a public school and the ENTIRE team watched it last week. Sorry if I get a little "red" when someone says it's an "infomercial for Jesus". I don't think that's appropriate, but to each their own. And if you worrying about offending someone, get out of the business, you aren't going to make everyone happy all the time. The one you need to worry about is the one you look at in the mirror every day.

It depends on mood of team and what you are putting them through. If you have 2 a days and are busting their tales on day long, the LAST thing I want to show them is a football movie. I would actually go away from the sports movies genre and go with something else. Like a comedy or something that will keep them tuned in. Now...if you have a soft team that complains all day. I would show them Junction Boys. Hands down.
I would also stay away from Facing the Giants. Everytime I watch that movie I feel like I get jobbed from a football movie. I feel like I should be in a shirt and tie and in church. Cant stand that movie.

I coach college level and can't recommend 300 enough to fire them up on the concept of stand with your teammates against the odds.

It wasn't my intent, though I'm sure that opinion came off a bit strong. (Which, it is, but it's just my opinion...and you know what they say about those...). And while I respect what you're saying, and again I agree with the basic premise of the film, I would not feel comfortable coaching in a situation where any particular religious belief is encouraged/expected of players. I just don't think it's my job though I do think role modeling and character development is. I would simply prefer to teach tolerance of all religions while not giving preferential treatment to one or encouraging its practice. But I guess they've yet to come out with a Muslim football movie, so maybe I'd best just shut up. Again, sorry to offend.

Caddyshack and Stripes, both great films, unfortunately these guys don't get them? Too bad!
Miracle is, IMO, the best motivational film and the kids "get it!" Cinderella Man, great film for a team that finds themselves as underdogs going into the season. The Express is another good film that can demonstrate that a man facing adversity can overcome, unfortunately the end gets a little long for their attention.
Titans is too cliche' these days, and Rudy seems to get lost in its own story. Marshall is another great film, but kids just like the film and fail to get any message from it. I love the corny B movie "Facing the Giants," but as a Christian I would, however, this is not something that I would show to my public high school team. As stated earlier, the "death crawl" scene is a good one with a great message. Come to think of it I could use the "gift truck" scene for our boosters and parents!
After all that....Miracle!

300 is great!!!
We have shown a a couple of documentary type films in the past and the kids liked them because they were about quote real football.
"The Last Game".
"Out Of The Blue".
"Perfect Effort"

I have used another movie, that is not football related, but has gone over well every year I have showed it.
Black Hawk Down
I make the kids write me a paper telling me why I showed the movie and what the main theme of the movie is.
We teach brotherhood a lot, (I was in the military) and the kids understand this.
I will also show Remember the Titans and then Brian's Song (original version) and require papers on these movies as well. All the same theme - brotherhood, teammates, together and obstacles to overcome in life.
We stress things like 11 playing as 1, and the chain is only as strong as the weakest link, and then we try to get the kids to buy into it.
The movie nights are a great tool.

We are Marshall is the only movie I have paid to see at the theater TWICE in 30 years. Blind Side is not a very REAL football movie IMHO. Little Giants is still my #1 favorite football movie! www.imdb.com/title/tt0110364/

Why show a movie? Just show the new Kenny Chesney video "Boys of Fall". About 6-7 minutes long and has all the football you want!

300 has decapitations in it I suppose you have to take into consideration the age of the players If they are old enough - if they win the game SHOWGIRLS - if they lose the game YENTL
