I've been reading alot of books about football lately (not instructional books but more biographical team books) and was wondering if anyone else had read some of these or had read any others they would recommend:
When The Game Stands Tall (about De La Salle HS) On Rocky Top (about UT Football) Meat Market (NCAA Recruiting) We Own This Game (about Pop Warner in Miami) The Proving Ground (about NFL Europe) War Without Death (Year in teh NFL East) Our Boys (Season with Smith Centre aka Barta Bone)

Ten Men You Meet in the Huddle by Bill Curry is really good. Also, read Blind Side. There is so much more to the story! (And they talk about how much Bill Walsh really changed the game of football.) An older one that I finished this fall is A View From the Bench by George Mills.

I really enjoyed "Hurricane Season" about the John Curtis Christian school and Hurricane Katrina. I finished "Where Men Win Glory" about a week ago...the story about Pat Tillman. Very insightful and a good read.

If you haven't read Twelve Might Orphans by Jim Dent, then it has to be on your list. Also, I would suggest, for those who love the history of the pro game, Breaker Boys by David Fleming, and for those who are more college in the tastes for football history, The Real All-Americans about the Carlisle Indians are both great reads.

Blanda: Alive and Kicking The biography of George Blanda. Besides the interesting story of the man himself, it has some insight into the rise of the AFL vs NFL rivalry.

Carlisle vs. Army is a great read. It's about the 1912 game between Carlisle and Army, but it also serves as a history of the two programs and a biography of Pop Warner, Jim Thorpe, and Dwight Eisenhower.

Junction Boys is a good read and also there is a book about Oklahoma when they won 50+ games in a row. Both good books to give you some insight into what college football was like back in the day.

Ditto on the Twelve Mighty Orphans - great book. I keep waiting for a movie to come out on that one.

Just finished "That First Season", about Vince Lombardi's first year in Green Bay. Good story, and though it was over 50 yaers ago, the point is still pretty much the same: few a few plays very well, and be in superior physical condidtion, and you'll see some success. You could almost feel the confidence level rise in the players as the book progressed.....

Is it "The Sweet Season" by Austin Murphy? He follows John Gagliardi and the St. John's program for a season -- I read it quite a while ago, but thought it was a good read.....

I agree with the Twelve Mighty Orphans by Jim Dent. Other than the Junction Boys, he has also written Monsters of the Midway and the Undefeated. All great books. Have not read his new one about ND. Also read It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium. Very good.

Our Boys is good. The GM - about Ernie Accorsi's last year with the Giants, among other things. How Football Explains America - Shows the development of the game side by side with the development of the US. Sweet Season is pretty good. Besides St. John's, it has a chapter about PLU and Coach Frosty Westering.

If you have not read Season of Life go buy it today! This book could change your entire outlook on coaching. I also like Lou Holtz Wins loses and lessons, adn 3rd and a Mile by William Rhoden. It talks about the evolution of the African American QB in the NFL.
