If anyone has directv they may be able to watch the CA state championship game of Bellarmine (san jose) who is doing a great job of pounding the ball against Oceanside (san diego) who is a spread team. The score at half is 13-10 Bellarmine. Go double wing.

Dub Wing lost...
But they were so undermanned... and to even be competitive with Oceanside, spoke volumes to the strategy, scheme, coaching staff, and players on Bell...
I was impressed... they had a chance to win... and that's all you can ask.

Bellarmine's DW puts them in a position to win and be competitive every week. Last few years they've really done some impressive things w/ that attack.
I thought Bellarmine would be woefully outmatched against a program like Oceanside, but they really did a pretty good job representing CCS and Nor-Cal, even in the loss.

Bellarmine played well, the fumble before halftime killed them. But our own, tothehouse's Nevada Union Miners got shafted! It was basically between them and Bellarmine for the D-1 bid and Bellarmine got selected. I would have loved to see Brad's team instead of Bellarmine

Agreed, I would've loved to have seen NU get the bid over Bellarmine. CCS doesn't get a love of love in the big picture of things (not without reason, generally speaking the elite Sacramento and North Bay teams are much better than the elite South Bay programs) so I was happy to see them perform like they did, but I think NU probably gets that W if they're in the game.
I really don't like the process for our state selection, but I don't know how else I'd do it.

Y'all don't have playoffs? You have a bowl? Really?

Heh, we'd be playing well into January, there's just too many teams! Shoot, L.A. by itself probably fields more teams than 1/2 of the states out there.
I'm watching Serra vs Marin Catholic right now, it's kind of a re-run of Bellarmine/Oceanside because Marin is a combo of DW and GT Triple vs Serra who has thrown for like 50 bajillion yards and TDs. The play by play chance that you could be seeing triple or midline or DW superpower is just brutal, seems to be giving them a chance vs what looks like an athletically superior team in Serra.
Edit: Time of Possession 1st Qtr MC: 11:40 Serra: 00:20

SoCal takes a 2-1 lead, but I've been very impressed with the representation from NorCal teams.

How did those "soft" spread teams beat the Double Wing run teams??? I mean since the spread means your defense will be "soft."

I agree We dont have a state playoff. It is certainly a popularity contest. Nevertheless, we were number one in the state and 3rd in the country and blew it on an xtra point. This is all too painful LOL but much props to Serra Catholic for winning it all.

That Serra Catholic team has probably the best trio of WRs I've ever seen. I was amazed at the talent they had all in one spot. #2 (Jordan?) was jaw-dropping with the ball in his hands, what a player.
I'm going to cry from having to hear Petros Papadakis announcing the two night games, though. I hate his voice like a fat kid hates the treadmill.

I'm just ticked that the central section is considered with the south. We will never have a bowl qualifier.

I was thinking I'd like to see 4 teams chosen from each division for a 2+1 format so that there could be more thorough representation and make it at least a little less of a popularity contest than it is right now.

I think CIF was talking about doing something like that, but it was ruled against.

Does Bellarmine run the DW Wing-T or do the run the DW with wedge blocking turning inside runs into a scrum? Haven't seen them run a wedge, but in Wyatt DW terms, they run mostly 88/99 Super Power, 3@2/2@3 Trap, 38/29 G-O, 88/99 Super Power Keep and Red Red/Blue Blue.

anyone know how the De La Salle/Crenshaw game turned out? I couldn't stay awake long enough to finish watching it!

Crenshaw jumped out to a 14-0 lead in Q1 on a 43 yard td and a 14? yard td. Looked like they would run away with it. DLS tied the game at 14 and then the stud RB for Crenshaw twisted an ankle. DLS went on to win 28-14. Their OL is impressive. Very physical battle. The DLS QB is a soph, several starters are sophs and jrs.

Thanks for the comments guys. Would have loved a shot to play in that game. Just to see where we would stack up. We ended up 13-1 and a Sac-Joaquin Section title. I'll take that any day.

DLS/Crenshaw was a heck of a game, I thought it was a great example of just how disciplined and even-keeled DLS can be. They seemed to be thrown off by Crenshaw's speed in the opening, but settled down and started clicking on O, which is when the game changed, imo. DeAnthony Thomas' ankle was definitely a factor, but I still believe DLS gets it done even if he's healthy.

Popularity contest??? I'm from Oceanside, but actually played at El Camino when it was still a power and head coached by Herb Meyer, who at the time of his retirement in 2003 was the winningest coach in the state. He was also HC at Oceanside before EC opened. There is tremendous football played there and I can argue that it rivals anywhere else in the state. There are over 20 section titles to that town's name and I'm sure it would have a bunch of state titles also had the state championship system been established many years ago. Oceanside hasn't lost in 40 contests. OHS has 2 state championships since they started this bowl system. The system takes merit into account. Unlike other states, unfortunately, we have very few cinderella stories in California. However, if you can build your resume by playing tough opponents year in year out like Oceanside has and actually beating them, you can be in the bowl game, too.

Serra vs Marin Catholic was the only game I got to see on FSN. The WR trio for Serra was amazing, but I really liked that RB from Marin Catholic #20? Adams? He was a tough runner. I liked the way they moved him around from option FB to double wing HB so keep him involved carrying the football.

I watched the Bellarmine and DeLaSalle games. In the 1st one, I was surprised that Bellarmine never ran any misdirection (Counter Criss-Cross?) plays. That one always gives us fits if we don't stay disciplined. In the DeLA Salle game it was pretty obvious that Crenshaw was built around their stud running back. When he went down, they had no solution. I don't think DLS "settled down" they just got to face slower running backs.

The California Bowl selection probably left out some deserving teams, but the games were all competitive. No blowouts. It made for a great week of football watching. The Texas finals were pretty good too. Texas is just as big as Cali. Why can't they work out a better state finals system? Does Cali that many more schools than Texas?

California has 37 million people while Texas has 24 million people. Pretty big difference. Then you have to take into account the different governing bodies within the CIF. The Southern Section alone has more schools than most states.

Schools that play football and corresponding enrollment figures from the CIF site:
Area Schools Enrollment NorCal 429 579992 SoCal 633 1253764 Total 1062 1833756
Not sure how many leagues there are in the state. The logistics of coming up with a state playoff system are a bit daunting. Doable, but it would take some real planning and substantial changes to the existing structures.
Distribution by section: Area # Schools Enrollment NorCal 429 579992 CC 97 146759 N 48 30844 NC 119 151362 O 6 8627 SF 12 18216 SJ 147 224184 SoCal 633 1253764 C 90 137893 LA 55 163149 S 398 795539 SD 90 157183
Grand Total 1062 1833756
The Southern Section has 398 schools playing football with an enrollment of 795,539 students.
