I remember when wearing #1 was just starting to be a big deal, but I dont think its even noticed anymore...at least not at the H.S. or small college I was coaching at....or for that matter at the youth level!

I will say this, you definitely notice the kid who is wearing the #1 jersey.
But beyond that.......
More important to me, at least, is the numbers on the secondary players.
The higher your number (excluding the 80's), the more apt we are to throw at you.......

Here's a question: How is wanting to wear a single-digit number calling attention to youself any more than an Indy-area kid who wants to wear #19 or a HS LB from Baltimore who wants to wear #52? because every one else has two digets and you only have one. bob ladoucer at De La Salle does not have single diget numbers for the very reason I do. It promotes individuality. It is also why I do not believe in having names on the back of jerseys.

I coach a sub varsity team, and we don't let them pick.... it elevates many problems. But I will say that you notice one, just like when I was playing basketball in high school you always looked to see who had 23. you knew they were going to be the best player on the other team 9 times out of ten

I started a football program here in Germany this season. None of my players had any idea of football, before we started.
So my QBs had #98 and #85, LBs have #26, #7, #95 etc.
It´s awkward to see first time, but our philosophy is, to "fill out a jersey" and not wear it because of a certain reason. So every number is "just a number" until you make it "yours".

I wore a single digit number, but always believed in team.
My BF who I worked for as a HC didn't allow it.
It's all on how the coach makes the numbers feel. I know a coach who gives out number 1 to his team leader, why because he is saying I will will be FIRST to run into battle for my team.
Now does that promote HIM, yes, but if I was a kid I would want to wear this number for the very reason he did, LEADERSHIP

Why does such a small thing like a jersey number cause so much consternation for coaches? The numbers are there for identification, not a representation of the players worth, value, or characteristics. A good kid wearing the #1 won't suddenly change personality. If you put a jerky kid in that jersey, and he act like a jerk, ITS NOT THE JERSEY.
Its just another number.

At least part of it is tradition for us. We've never had a #1 or #69 and it's very rare for a #13 or #14 (gang issues) and we've retired #60 (death). We've never had names on our backs. There are certain numbers that are traditional for us, for example #24 = #1 HB, #42 = stud LB, #8 or #4 = stud player, but we don't necessarily force them or deny them their chance to choose.
I do agree that the creep is a creep regardless of what number he wears, but I also believe that we want to promote humility and team-first attitudes and I don't agree that wearing #1 does that. We may someday have a #1 jersey, but I don't think it will be anytime soon.

I too am against the use of the #1! So much so, I don't allow my players to wear any numbers that has a 1 in it... 21 only means you think you are two times better than #1... 11? I wish a kid would try to wear a 11 on my field... what's he trying to do? Feel good about himself? Not on my field... obnoxious little sh_t! I think, and I'm going to have to get the okay from my administration, but next year... I'm going to remove all the numbers that when added, subtracted, multiplied or divided, equals a number with a 1 in it... I'm not having it... a run a "team" oriented program... and there's no 1 in team!

We have kids wearing 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. No #1 this year...we couldn't find the away jersey.
Anyway, 5 of the 6 kids who wear the single-digit jersies were all attendance and performance leaders during the summer and are major contributors to our 2-1 start. The kid who wears #6 plays DE and TE and is a really hard worker. Plus, the single digit jersey makes him look a lot bigger than he already is.
It is just a number...for whatever reason, kids identify with a specific number and that is their thing. If a kid feels better about himself by wearing a specific number and that is some small way helps him perform better, isn't that a good trade off?
Sometimes, coaches get wrapped up in the silliest things.

The number 1?
I'm more concerned with my players wearing multiple earrings, missing practice because they're getting their hair done, trying to be prettier than the girls!
Number 1... puhhleaassee... I don't want them wearing pink!

Just a number - #1 for us is the back up QB - his Uncle worn the number 30 years ago. It is only a big deal when the coach assigns it to a player for a special reason. Each year we post the roster in the locker room with the returning players on the roster. Kids come to the head coach and can request a number change. If multiple kids request the same number, commitment to the program (summer attendence) and number of years in the program determine who gets it -- everything equal coin toss in Head Coaches Office

Our sophomore stud running back/hybrid receiver wears #1 in football AND basketball, but is probably the hardest worker on the football field and the second hardest worker behind our junior shooting guard who is being recruited by Duke, UCLA, Arizona St., and Syracuse. He's the first kid in about 10 years in our conference to start in both football and basketball his sophomore year, but he's very humble and it's not a big deal.

At my current school, we don't have a #1 jersey. Interesting enough, the only kid that ever made a big deal out of it was a "ME" guy. At my old school, we reserved #1 for the "Teacher of the Week". The kids chose the teacher each week. The teacher would join us for the coin toss, then be welcome to stand on the sideline during the entire game, or until he/she couldn't handle the language any longer Of course, the kids would mostly choose their favorite teachers that were football fans. But once in a while, they would chose the "anti-football" teacher, and the ones that accepted seemed to enjoy themselves and look at HS football and our players in a new light. We need to start doing this again. That is great. I need to remember this one for next season.

Its just a #. I wore #4 in H.S. 3 of my older cousins wore #4 when they were in H.S so I just assumed it was some kinda family tradition so I wore it too.
I have a player now with #1 and he by no means is a selfish individual player.
