Played for and coached with a guy who got absolutely nothing out of film study. That would be OK as a HC only he was also the OC and to add insult to injury he was the self proclaimed greatest OL coach in Ohio but he wanted to execute shoulder blocking and run the spread without a zone scheme.... Eh we didn't do that well and this was at a big D1 High School in NE Ohio that has produced several D1 players. So we had talent and a knockout defense but we couldn't score points and he blamed everyone but himself.

Thats only a half an hour...that would never fly in our youth organization. Seroulsy, when I began coaching 6-7-8 year olds, the 9 year old coach would spend 60 minutes on cals! this was not the conditioning period. So, of course we did the same.... Since I was a HS coach, I was always an hour late, and they would always be finishing drills! When I left the team as 8th grader, it was still the same way! So be thankful! Oh, another coach of the 7-8 year olds, thought it was the NFL, and used to yell at the kids because they should all be on the same knee when taking a knee! WOW Wow. I'll all for being a stickler for details and discipline... but just...wow. Yelling at those kids for not getting on the same knee? Seriously? I bumped into one of my fellow assistants off that team I was talking about a few days ago. He said the HC I mentioned earlier told everybody he didn't know why I was coaching football since I told him offhandedly one day that the NFL bored the crap out of me. This was after he asked me who he should pick for his fantasy team this year... This guy was something else. Nothing like a guy who closes out every practice with a "back in my day" story about how great he was in HS. Then he runs out of stories after about 3 weeks so he just starts repeating himself. I felt like I was listening to Al Bundy tell the "4 TDs in one game" story over and over and over... I love football, but I get sick of watching he NFL. Much of it doesn't carry over to high school. I much more enjoy watching college football, it seems more transferable. If anyone ever asks me where I played, I tell them and then immediately follow the statement up with "I wasn't very good at the D1 level, however, and only played for one year and stopped playing after a severe knee injury.

1. Getting your playbook from Madden.......not joking here. 2. Zero off season work.....no spring, no summer...just show up in August and let's get the season rolling!!! 3. 3 negatives before a positive. This guy was consistently negative with his choice of words with his players before he came close to a positive word. 4. Zero acknowledgement for the efforts of the lower level coaches. Even when they win a championship. I have to agree here. I have worked for some great and some not so great coaches.

How about the QB/WR coach, who in the game, if asked to suggest a pass play, chooses the play by backward elimination? “Play 31 doesn’t work, 24 neither..” and so on. In order to avoid a delay of game penalty you then have to call a run play real fast. Or, if you call a pass play yourself, he immediately approaches you after the play to tell you a) the play shouldn’t have worked in this situation b) it was obvious to him that the play wouldn’t work
He never shares his knowledge of the opponent with other assistants. On the other hand, he never misses an opportunity to point out that something outside his responsibility just did not work. “Your OLB didn’t cover down the slot receiver” (Well, I had noticed that). “Our opponent’s kickoff coverage is better than ours” (Maybe they do the unthinkable and practice it). Needless to say, he uses NFL highlight reels to instruct his receivers about route running. Not really an efficient way, if your players hate you. Some have asked to switch positions. But how many DBs do you need on a team?

How about the coach that has to justify everything to the players? What about the one who says its "ok" to throw a pick-6 because "its part of football" and "those things happen." There is also the one who will get after the coaches after having a bad practice....in front of the players. You can't forget about the one who questions his coaches abilities at every chance.
To me all bad guys to work for. Wouldn't you know it, the guy I am working for did all those things in the same week. This could be a long year. I know that you are supposed to be loyal to the HC and the program, but when he has more loyalty to the players than his coaches there's a problem. The really frustrating part is that he doesn't see why the team isn't any better than we are. He doesn't see that the players are running the program and have no discipline. I'm a man, I can take a chewing if I screw up or don't run a good practice, but not in front of the players. That just underminds my authority with them and gives them excuses for when they don't do things right. It also doesn't give me anything to stand on when I need to get after them for not doing things right. Its really frustrating that he will discipline his coaches (in front of the players) but do almost nothing when a kid throws his helmet and talks back to a coach.
Sorry about the rant, but I really needed to vent. Its could be a really long season.

I wonder if IM horrible to coach with: 'the never give it a rest guy" I seriously can talk/work football every waking second. I dont have alot of time for grab arse and joking around either, I like to watch film, watch clinic videos, talk shop...I wonder if it gets old to my assistants? im the "oh no another football email" guy... the "lets use every available legal minute to get better" guy....ah well. AMEN! I feel the same way. I wonder during the offseason if my other coaches are afraid to see me because all I want to do is talk x's and o's...

so the new hc comes in late in the school year to replace a very well respected coach. hasnt seen film-but knows what offense and defense he wants to run. doesnt talk to the kids takes away any and all traditions the school has had in a short life(4 years old school) wants to do everything but delegates it all and complains when its done a way different from his, but is done. wont talk to coaches in the halls during school, but talks to others that we are disloyal. will not take a suggestion, but complains when things are not working asks for YOUR help/ideas, but wont use it or says that "he" came up with a great play/idea/plan. gets fired/resigns for verbal abuse/bullying player and tells admin/school board that if he was going down, certain staff members were too. a lawyer is involved, they get scared and follow thru with his threat. he is still a teacher, but not a coach. i lose my job........forced out..... Anyone looking to buy a house in NC? lol
