Let's hear some head coach horror stories, without naming names of course. Some of these will differ based on perspectie, but here's a few I've heard off the top of my head.
requiring all coaches to wear high socks, becuase that's what they did back in the 80's when the won the state title at X high school.....naturally, it was the socks that got them that ring
no sunglasses on the practice field "you gotta look them boys in the eye coach!"
a$$ chewings galore for small things (no whistle around the neck at practice, gum chewing, etc.)
facial hair policies for the coaching staff.....annoying
"breaking down" after coaches meetings....(i swear I've heard this)..."great meeting guys.....1...2.....3.....eagles!!!"
the extremely straight laced guy....if word got back to him that members of the staff were drinking or cussing.....on their own time...in their homes....they would be immediately in the doghouse and he would work to get them fired.....

Do you need a whistle to be a good coach?

I think the worst HC is one who is crazy. Emotionally disturbed, EH coach was you think is OK before the season. Then, to top it off, he was really stupid too. He knew enough to make you think he knew the game, but got most of his understanding from ESPN.
Now, THAT'S worse than white socks anyday. OJW

Blaming everything that goes wrong on Friday Night on the assistants in a loud, angry, and public way.

1. Getting your playbook from Madden.......not joking here.
2. Zero off season work.....no spring, no summer...just show up in August and let's get the season rolling!!!
3. 3 negatives before a positive. This guy was consistently negative with his choice of words with his players before he came close to a positive word.
4. Zero acknowledgement for the efforts of the lower level coaches. Even when they win a championship.

Man- this is my favorite type of thread lol.
1) the moody guy- positive and energetic rah rah one second, gloomy and doomy the next, extreme mood swings with identity of program too ...November "we are hanging our hat on the straight T gentlemen...then august rolls around and coach is passing out "heres your no huddle air raid wrist coaches"
2) take no responsibility for anything guy- every one else sucks
3) I know all I need to know guy_ we just dont have the players, we dont need to go to clinics or watch film, scheme doesnt matter, we just dont have the players
4) arrogant guy- "we won the pee wee championship three years in a row" type who holds himself in extremely high esteem. Its all about him. gives little to no notice to staff for meetings , staff out of loop for everything
5) disorganized and disinterested guy_ no meetings, no plans, no clue
6) mr negativity- he cant, they cant, he wont, they wont, we cant, we wont...
7) sociopath- purposely tries to keep you from advancing your career by bashing you behind your back while completely taking advantage of your hard work and investment in the program. selfish and keeps you a bit of a secret from others.
8) former star at redneck school- no coaching ability at all, just played on a good team in a weak league back in the 70s. principal was on that team, drinking buddy
9) also coach basketball and baseball guy- overextended.
10) always looking somewhere else guy- applies at all of the bigger schools trying to get to college level asap. meanwhile his program is weak to mediocre at best.

thoughts -- I've known all of these guys -- and I've probably been a few during +30 years of coaching. and yes you do need a whistle to be a good coach - how else do you end a drill?

I worked with an old coach who told stories of working for a guy(not for very long) who would use the board on his young coaches...also when they had a function of some sort he would tell staff members who could bring their wives and who couldnt(if he didnt like the wife the coach was told to leave her at home)

A coach that either doesnt know enough about his own scheme, or is too proud, to make a change during a game. Now im not talking about the straight T to air raid change like was mentioned earlier, but just someone so stubborn that they refuse to believe that they need to do something else in order to succeed.

I coached with a guy who was a great administrative guy (knew what forms to get in) but did NOT KNOW A THING ABOUT FOOTBALL. He would not relinguish control over anything. I left after the first year.

the closet alchoholic!!! Scream at you after hours when you are at work late making cutups, handouts, scouting reports instead of being home tucking your kids in. He shows up at 11:00 and is trashed and ripping ass on you and the other assistants for putting the staples in the handouts at an angle rather than parallel to the top. (no Bull here gentelmen)

that guy sounds like an arse.
let me add another one because this type drives me nuts:
the "internet download" guy, downloads playbooks from the internet and without any further research hangs his hat on that for the coming season, spends spring ball installing it but it never shows up in the season...this guys a close cousin to the "college bowl game guy" who copycats the bowl teams offense "notre dame does it like this" while we take "special" guard and try to run notre dames offense. I saw it in the nfl/college/hs championships game guys drive me nuts.

I thought of another one...the guy who fell into success at a past school so he keeps getting head jobs...even though he's horrible
there's a guy in our neck of the woods who was on the junior high staff of a team who won state in the early 90's.......never takes off the ring..and amazingly keeps parlaying it into head coaching jobs...even though he is known for running off players....always underperforming teams...and EVERY time this guy takes over a program, there is a mass exodus of assistant coaches the next year...unbelievable

TDmaker, That post should be made into a poster. I would put it on my wall. Actually, I might just do that.
On another note: I wear a whistle, but I don't require my other coaches to. Teaching going to the echo of the whistle is one of the best things you can do for your program. Great point!

I think arrogant people are the hardest to work with. What's more is in their own excellence they view humility and openmindedness as a sign of weakness and/or stupidity in regard to their overpowering supurbness of knowledge. You can't make a suggestion to this guy, because if you are "right" then he is "wrong".

I wonder if IM horrible to coach with:
'the never give it a rest guy"
I seriously can talk/work football every waking second. I dont have alot of time for grab arse and joking around either, I like to watch film, watch clinic videos, talk shop...I wonder if it gets old to my assistants? im the "oh no another football email" guy... the "lets use every available legal minute to get better" guy....ah well.

You can't make a suggestion to this guy, because if you are "right" then he is "wrong". ever work for the opposite of this guy? hes the one who goes 'ok, lets try that" with every silly suggestion he gets from moms, dads, boosters, players, his kids, nfl game day, and all of his "fan with whistle" assistants who really dont know what is being covered all week because they only show up friday night with all the solutions

Wow....this is an interesting discussion A lot of good points brought up and I'm sure reading/expressing this can be quite cathartic.
Is it safe to assume that none of these qualities exist with any posters on this board (as in, to be actively seeking networking to improve, you already "get it")?

I am the exact same way. I find the longer I coach, the less frivolous stuff I do. I study football year round all the time and I still haven't even scractched the surface. My kids are asking me to go on a bike ride right now..."just a minute"... so anyway. I feel I have great knowledge, yet I think there is so much more to learn, it is never enough. Here is an example of "arrogant guy". Playing a DW team and we are getting beat up with superpower. We are in a straight TNT look 2-0-2 look out of our three interior linemen. When told we are getting beat up in the C gap with super, doesn't want to hear it. Goes and yells at the kids and tells them to play harder. Great guy though.

This is just plain fun to read: TDmaker, I love #7, you sure we don't know the same people?
7) sociopath- purposely tries to keep you from advancing your career by bashing you behind your back while completely taking advantage of your hard work and investment in the program. selfish and keeps you a bit of a secret from others.
I worked for a guy that was just stupid, straight up stupid. He did exactly this, took advantage of other's work and then mocked them. Good news-he got fired and will never coach again...whoo hoo. I signed on before I know he was this way, had to honor my commitment, but that was many years ago.
I learned something through the things I suffered, "crazy people will make you crazy." OJW

can I change the ending of the thread to "work with" as in, another assistant coach.
He is the guy that coaches a position, but if you try to coach, "his guys" then you get the, "don't coach my guys" or "I'll take care of my guys and you take care of yours". And I'm the DC for crissakes. So the HC has intervened and things are better....but I still think that attitude is there. No big deal...I'll still coach "his guys" because I coach them better than him.

I will coach mine" with regards to other position coaches. NOTHING infuriates me more than other position coaches putting in their two cents (which is usually not worth that much)

Saw that happen to...then we hung 60+ on them in the game and the HC wife ran onto the field and cursed us out at the end of the game.
