we've all had kids that played summer basketball and summer baseball - but the new thing around here is the proliferation of mixed martial arts. Lots of our kids are fighting in bouts. You can't fault the idea of the kids becoming more aggressive. I'm just afraid our tailback will get a knee swiped and lose the football season.

It is what it is- I wouldn't worry too much about injuries- he could break a leg crossing the street
I am also seeing a lot more kids taking MMA classes in our area as well. I've got a 220lb 8th grader who has makes it to every lift except on Wednesdays when he has 2hrs of Jiu jitsu with his instructor who happens to be our JV wrestling coach as well...This kid is tough as nails right now- when he matures he is going to be NASTY

Amen to that whitemike. I had one of my lineman tell me today that he wasnt going to open mats for wrestling because he wanted to concentrate on football in the summer and that he didn't want to get hurt. I about wigged out on him. I asked him if he was allowed to play tittlywinks or if that was too much of an injury risk for them. Kids don't understand that the more atheltic things that they do that the better athletes they will be and better athletes have smaller chance of getting hurt.

It also builds toughness. I don't mean the the he-man ultra-aggressive manner, but rather, it builds mental toughness and pain tolerance.
Its not a coincidence that our kids who wrestle rarely, if ever, go to the trainer for an injury. They don't get as many sprains and tweaks and twists. They live with it. They don't let it bother them. They don't use it as a crutch.

What makes you think it is a joke? They are amazing athletes and the training they go through is intense. Whether you like it or not it is getting popular and is only gonna get bigger. Side note, local story Our rival's stud NT/Rb from last year also won state in wrestling and took nationals in greco wrestling. He could wrestle just about anywhere in college but he is choosing to go the MMA route. This kid is a stud, strong as an ox and just tough as anyone i have ever seen. I wouldnt be surprised at all to see him on pay per view in a few years

I'll take a legit fighter on my team any day. As long as these kids know where and when to use the skills and don't use them to rule the streets and get in trouble I'm fine with it. Its better that they take classes and learn to do this the right way than start some backyard wrestling ring that would end up on youtube.

I'm in favor of it for all of the same reasons mentioned previously.
While I do think it can lead to some serious jack-assery and about 85-90% of the guys who are 'professionals' are gigantic toolbags, I have a grudging respect for those can dedicate themselves to something as rigorous, demanding, and intensive as MMA. No such thing as a lazy or timid MMA competitor.

I put it in this terms.
If my son grew up to play football, baseball...hell even soccer professionally, I'd be happy.
If he grew up and wanted to be a boxer or MMA fighter, I'd be scared sh!tless.
And just leave it at that.

My boss at a previous job was a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu. I learned more about body control and mental toughness in a very short amount of time than I did anywhere else. The most intense training I have ever been through. Awesome stuff.
If the kids are learning from a real instructor and are not doing the backyard Youtube stuff I am all for it.

the first UFC Gym is opening near my house this fall. The dude who is creating it is form the area and one of the original founders of 24 hr fitness... They are supposed to open a few on the west coast and in Hawaii. I am seriously thinking of joining up, not to fight competitively but it would get me in the best shape of my life and its always nice walking into a room and knowing you can take anybody there, lol

Watch the first 10 seconds.
I wouldn't want anybody I know to get wrapped up in this "sport" to be on the receiving end of this.
I am 100% against encouraging this. 100%. There are plenty of sports out there now for kids to play....probably even too many.
EDIT: Watch from 30 seconds to 40 seconds. I can't imagine any of the kids I have coached getting beat on like that.

I love MMA and enjoy watching it. I really respect the fighters for the hard work they put into it, their toughness and their skill. With that said, i don't want my son to go into it. I wouldn't mind if he TRAINED as a mixed martial artist, but for him to actually step into the ring for a fight........i wouldn't want that at all. It's not a career path i would choose for him.
We love watching the fights, we love the artistry of it all, but i prefer that we both enjoy all of that from the safety of our living room.

I like watching the fights as well. I would rather a kid go to boxing route because that is where the pay days are. a top UFC title fetches lower 6 figures while a top boxing match fetches millions of dollars. either way it is a hard way to make a living.

Most of it is just the training they get very 1 on 1 octagon time like this because they are under 18. They probably all have to wear headgear and gloves and other protective gear. Once they turn 18 it gets more legit but remember they are choosing to participate they know what can happen

I have a player I coached two years ago who has trained with Couture and many of the guys you see fighting on T.V. He came over Saturday night and watched the fights with me and a couple of other guys and he talked about meeting many of the fighters, announcers and even White when he trained in Las Vegas. I love to watch it but I would never participate even when I was young and thought I was tough. He wants me to come to his next fight but I declined because I could not watch if he was getting crushed. I would want to help because he was one of my students and players. It makes me look at it differently knowing that someone I care about is going to fight. What if he got knocked out like Bisping? I think I would be sick. He was one heck of a football player and he was built to fight but I hope he goes back to school.

I'll amend my earlier comment by adding this: If the boy's doing it for the training and the challenge, etc, then I would feel OK about not discouraging it (which is really what it comes down to, would you or would you not discourage it). If he's doing it for a career option, I'd discourage it because, frankly, that's almost certainly a dead end street that creates a lot of frustrated, muscular young men who know how to hurt someone and that's about it. Not the kind of young men I want to create for this world.

MMA is entertainment plain and simple. I love how some guys on here think just b/c they go to a gym and train with MMA guys they are going to have the baddest, toughest kids on the field, or you want to take it b/c you can take anyone out as someone mentioned above. If that were the case wouldn't every one of us have a state championship caliber team? I've got kids that show up to practice every day, haven't missed workouts, lift hard but will never find there way off the JV team.
I grew up with a bunch of kids who took karate, brazilian jinjitsu, kung fu etc... but when it came down to a real fight, it doesn't matter all that much. The other guy isn't fighting like that - nor does he have to. Just like in real life when another guy steps up to you in a bar and wants to fight are you going to ask him if he's in your weight class?
I'm not saying that I've never watched an MMA fight - I have, many. I've even participated in the Toughman contests in bars back before it was called MMA. The point I'm making is that this is just the latest bandwagon event that appeals to a certain demographic-which isn't all that far removed from "professional" wrestling.
Rex Kwon Do anyone?
