Thought I'd give our Coach Huey youth coaches a heads up on Hudl's new youth edition. For $250 per year you get their top-of-the-line video editor to capture, cut and add detailed play data to your own games and opponent scout games. It's the same editor used by high school and small colleges. You'll get unlimited online storage on Hudl.com for your own games and 2 hours worth of storage for practice and scout games. You can telestrate and add written notes to each play for everyone to see or just individual players or coaches. Each youth team has 30 player/parent and 5 coaches login account. All 3 levels of our youth organization have signed up and have already posted a few games from last year. Funny thing -- they also purchased a 4th account for the cheerleaders. The cheerleading coaches wanted to self scout their halftime routines Equal opportunity I guess Many of the youth parents were really excited about having access to all the games online. And also having the opportunity to create individual game and season highlights to keep and share (online and/or DVD) with family members. Might be worth checking out the free 30 day trial. It's an incredible system IMHO. www.hudl.com/tour/youth.aspxBTW - the youth edition doesn't include the reporting system. If you want the full high school system with unlimited player and coach access, voice-over walk-through, unlimited standard and custom reporting, 10 hours of practice and scouting video and the use of Xbox remote controllers, you have to upgrade to the $800 per year service. Just looking to keep our members in the loop. Let us know if you have any questions.

I saw their system demo at the Glazier clinic and it looked very cool. I haven't been able to get our organization to pull the trigger on getting this package for us, but I may end up just paying for it myself. Assuming it actually works they way it did in the demo, it's a great tool. As I recall, you can put notes on the screen of each play reviewing all the coaching points for that play, so that your players will have a real learning experience when they watch it. I believe you could customize the notes for each player or by groups (line, backs, etc.). I'm not 100% sure about that - it was a few months ago, and I saw several other systems - I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken. Anyway, I thought this was the best package available for youth programs.

Then when you telestrate and add notes to the play, you'll share it with the custom group, individual, coaches or the whole team. It's an incredible teaching tool. If your organization is like ours, it's mostly made up of parents. If you show them the highlight feature, I'll bet they'll jump right on board. You can email highlights to anyone on the internet (ie - they don't have to have a Hudl account) Great to show grandparents, aunt and uncles, etc. Especially now that they have this extremely affordable $250 youth version. Another thought is to sell individual and/or team highlight DVDs at the end of the season. 25 players at $10 = $250 The online highlight and DVD feature is included. The players and parents love to create individual highlights -- only picking their best plays to save forever.

This sounds like a great idea.
Now if we could only find that video parent that wont keep zooming in too close...film their own son all of the time...or forget what they are doing by filming the grass !

These products are video editing/scouting applications that have the capability to- * import video * cut them into clips * add detailed play data * filter on play data to reveal tendencies * create cutups * provide detailed visual reports * create individual highlights * exchange film (watchgamefilm.com has this feature) Honestly, watchgamefilm.com is more closely aligned with FREE video hosting services such as YouTube, Google Video, Vimeo, etc. You're responsible to capture and convert the video into an uploadable format. They're a nice video hosting service, but they don't provide ANY of their own software. Also, be aware that the videos are hosted as one continuous stream (ie the game video isn't divided into individual play clips). Many free services allow the creation of written comments over the video. Dave, give the Hudl 30 day free trial a try -- I think you'll be blown away by their editing software for only $250 per year for youth teams. The included hosted video is just a bonus.

It worked very well for us with the e-mail notifications to parents coaches, comments and new play analysis feature is coming soon etc. for $89 it was a good fit for us. Slow motion and other features made it better than the free stuff, plus when I called them up, I got to speak to a live human or got a call back right away. Heck I even got to meet one of their reps in Atlanta when I was there, he offered to come meet me and speak at our clinic there. That means something to me a non techi.
As a youth coach, I dont spend the time of breaking everything down and segmenting it etc

As a youth coach, I dont spend the time of breaking everything down and segmenting it etc Hudl is in Lincoln and being from here I called to talk to the Pres of this tiny company 2 times. No voice mail and no return call. I ran a 250 person org and I called back every single person that ever left me a message, in 24 hours or less. Tom Osborne calls everyone back in 48 hours or less etc, not sure these guys are busier than him. The University of NEbraska Omaha AD calls me back same day. Got calls back from Bob Ladeceur, Jim Rackley, Hal Wasson on same day and in Business, MUCH bigger companies, talked to top dog in 24 hours of first call. HEck I ran the largest free Youth Coaches clinic right in Lincoln at Memorial stadium, they missed out on showing 100 local youth coaches what their stuff could do and at no cost to Hudl, they are in Lincoln . I get over 500,000 visitors to my web site annually and would have been happy to do a write up on it etc, but no calls returned. Left a bad taste in my mouth, you just dont do that. It was in January when things were slow etc. Maybe it's me, but a pet peeve of mine. We're providing our professional, unbiased opinion to help out our fellow coaches on this forum. Because you personally feel your business was slighted is immaterial for coaches looking to evaluate video scouting products. I'd suggest any youth coach who's looking into a video scouting solution, try the free trial for each service and draw your own conclusions.

You'll get unlimited online storage on Hudl.com for your own games and 2 hours worth of storage for practice and scout games. This is a little confusing. I don't particularly need to put my games online, as much as the team we will be playing. 2 hours seems awfully limited in that way. How do we scout with this limitation?

With respect to the 2 hours, you should be able to condense your film significantly smaller chunks because you cut out the time in-between plays on your film. With this in mind, you should be able to store 3-4 scout games in the 2 hour allotment. Just a question: About how many games do you (or an average youth coach) have for scouting opponents? We are always looking to evaluate and improve our models, and ff we are way off on this one, we'd like to know so that we can correct it and provide a better value to coaches.

I coach in a league that has 20 senior teams, 20 junior teams, 20 bantam teams, and 20 flag teams. We get a copy of each game WE play, and then a copy of the upcoming opponent. So, roughly, 10 games a year to scout. I do a grading of our game, then a highlight tape, and then spend about 2 hours a night until the next game going over the DVD of our opponent. I cannot speak for others, but scouting is a big part of it. I know that playing ball all the way up, we always spent more time on the scouting film than on our own games.
But, after re-reading your answer, the quesion may be, how many games do we have to scout for the upcoming opponent. That would be 1. So, I guess you could delete each opponent as you finish with them, and then put up the next. I guess that makes the most sense.

We usually get 1 tape of our game and the opponents.... some coaches trade so you might get 1-3 games of your next opponent for scouting. Unless the teams scratch the DVD purposely...which happens
Question for hudl: If a city were to purchase the High school version could we use it for all 7 age group teams? like the high schools can use for multiple sports?

Not only can you remove any of your older opponent scout game to make room for new ones, you can also download them using our Video Editor software to archive them first if you want. If you ever want the video back on hudl.com - you can just republish that game back up later on in the season (say you face the same team again in the playoffs and want the scout game from earlier in the season back online for the team). Hope that helps. Feel free to call us here at the office - 402-817-0060 if you want to discuss over the phone.

... Question for hudl: If a city were to purchase the High school version could we use it for all 7 age group teams? like the high schools can use for multiple sports? You are not able to add those additional 7 youth teams under the high school account. When a high school purchases Hudl for football - they are able to create teams for Varsity, JV, and Freshmen if they want, but aren't able to create additional teams for all of the youth teams in the city. If you sign up for 6 or more youth teams together, the price does drop from $250/team/year to $200. One of the challenges for us is the variety in the number of teams in each city. We want to always provide a premium experience for our youth coaches and players and aren't able to do that if the high school can sign up at $800 for Hudl-Silver and add a large number of youth teams at the same time for free. I'm confident that your coaches/players/parents are going to get great value out of the $200 youth package if you choose to sign up. Would be glad to talk to you about the system in more depth if you are interested - 402-817-0060 or sales@hudl.com.

I believe he was trying to ask if his youth program could pay the extra money to purchase the full high school version of the package and be able to put all 7 youth teams on it (similar to how the high schools put up multple sports and/or multiple levels - Varsity, JV, Frosh, etc), and then not be subject to the youth version limitations? I read it that he was inquiring about paying more money for the full product, not piggybacking on the HS's account for free.

I was inquiring about the full product, purchased by the youth organization itself. I could call and ask, but since you are posting on a public forum I thought, this question may be good info for all the coaches reading. Most youth programs have multipule teams, so if all the teams/age groups in the program/city were to purchase the product for $200 a team. Many would be paying more then the High school and getting less. Example: our city has 7 teams peewee up to Unlimited. at the discounted rate thats $1400, $600 more then a highschool would have to pay, to have Football V, JV, & Fresh -Basketball Boys V & JV, Girls V & JV, wrestleing, ect... the Youth version has less features so in esssence a city could be paying more and getting less. This is why I asked if a youth program could purchase a full version for the $800 instead of the individual team for $250. On another note if you were to take down the game and then put it back up, would you then have to re-enter all the info like down and distance, yardline...ect?

Sorry about that - misinterpreted the question.
I think there is a little confusion regarding the high school pricing. The $800 Silver price is for one sport and allows you to add JV, V, Freshman for that sport. It is $1,200 for our Silver package for 2 sports and $1,600 for the Silver package for the entire school (unlimited sports).
I see how that still leaves the question of why a youth league should pay $1,400 for 7 teams to use the youth package when a high school can pay $1,600 for a Silver account for every sport/team. We definitely want to the cost for Hudl to be as fair as possible for everyone. Our youth pricing on the website is targetted towards the scenario that one or two teams are signing up. For leagues, we are glad to work with you to find a price that makes sense and we can be more flexible when a large number of teams are signing up together. We will be doing a better job of integrating a league pricing option into the site for next season that is more fair. We do the same thing on the high school front when an entire district or conference is signing up.
Please feel free to call (402-817-0060) to dicuss pricing for the league. And please keep the feedback coming. By next season, we hope to have the youth package more dialed-in and all of our current Hudl youth teams will be able to take advantage of any pricing or package changes we make for next season. We've already increased the player and coach limits for youth package based on your feedback and those will likely go up even more for next season.
To answer your second question - if you take a game down, you don't have to re-enter any of the information when you put it back up. All of the video and breakdown data go back up with just a couple clicks.

ampipebulldog, I know we are constantly evaluating the pricing and features that are included in Hudl's youth package. One of our old posts in this thread says that we hope to have our youth package more dialed-in for next season and now that most youth teams are finishing their seasons, we plan to go back and revisit how Hudl worked for youth teams, what we need to add, and what was unused. I'll make sure to file a request for you, but one of the ways that you can directly communicate with our staff is through the feedback page at feedback.hudl.com - You can add your request there and get direct feedback from members of our staff.

Quick Question - With a youth account, can I change my team name yearly as we change team names. For instance, I might be the Cowboys one season and in spring we might be the Tigers or something, we never really know. So, as season progresses into season, can I keep all the data loaded and saved for use but change the team name?

Yes. If you go to the Manage page for your team, you can click the Edit button by your team name to change it.

Hey guys, I am unable to get our school to buy the Hudl software. I will be using the pinnacle software to clip the film. If any of you have used pinnacle before, do you know if there is a way to "tag" the clips. I have other software I can use to search through the clips if there is a tag attached. Thanks.

I use pinnacle, real pain in the rear
Sure you can add text to any clip- No way to Tag/store/search- We spend 100s of hours on pinnacle doing what it takes us just a handfull of hours on Hudl. If I value my time at even $2 an hour going the Hudl route makes sense.
