We are looking at getting new helmets, what do you suggest?
The DNA helmet by Shutt is ugly to me, but the kids seem to like it, does anyone have any experience with these?
Thanks everybody, OJW

We are going to the Air XP. Has a lot of the features of the DNA without the wierd shape. We tried 3 of them last year and were pretty happy. They seemed to move a little bit but I was told they fixed that. Much better padding then the old style.

Revolution by Riddell. There is a reason the pro's all wear Riddell.

we have some Riddells and they sit on the shelves all year long. Our kids love the DNA's and the new Air Xp by Schutt. We almost have to force our kids to wear a revolution.
As far as fixing a helmet, I would rather fix a schutt than a riddell. A lot more user friendly.

PS: The majority of the pros wear Riddell because its the official helmet of the NFL. To be the official helmet of the NFL all you have to do is pay $$$$$$.
There are many players who wear schutt helmets in the NFL. Tony Romo, Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs jut to name a few.

Riddell Revolution. The new Revo Speed helmet is a very good helmet. It fits differently than any other helmet I have seen. The kids love them.

Schutt XP. The problem with Riddells is that a lot of players don't like the protection it gives and you are limited to the low hook-up for chinstraps, which some players don't like (Obviously, you can drill a hole in the top for the high hookups, but it's much easier to just get the Schutt)

We use revolutions. The new speed revolutions are sweet. Cadillacs for the head. A far cry from the suspension helmets I used back in the day.

OJW-
We went to only the Adams helmets 3 years ago (from schutt). They are wonderful, and lighter than the same technology schutt and riddell. The kids love them in the heat, and the customer service has been great. We had a weird shaped head and needed some interior padding and it was here in three days. If you want, PM me and I'll give the contact for the national guy we use for all this stuff. Highly recommend the Adams. And much better in the budget department.

We use revs.
We had a big time player with headache issues after games/practice. We sent him to a specialist and he went to the DNA. It was MUUUCH better for him than the revs the year before.

Look into Xenith. They are a new company, but are great. Kids love them. It is a totally different design concept than anything on the market. Much better than the revolution, imo.

There are some kids who need helmets from different brands. Kids with Dreds do alot better in Revolutions or DNA's. For some reason different head shapes fit different companies better. Being comfortable with your sales rep, his service, who your reconditioner will be as well as what your kids will wear. I had a kid want to wear an old Air rather than a Revo or DNS because he "didn't want his head to look big" (and he's a good student with something to protect in there!)

I have always liked the DNA's. But we got some extra money from the booster club so we bought 6 Revos for some of our skill kids. We shall see....

OJW, Adams is a good helmet. A few of the high schools and about 7 of the youth leagues around here have them. Ray Adams was just down here for one of our fundraisers, great guy. If you are interested I have a contact that works with Adams. I am located on the east coast.

we have found over the years it is good to have a little of both can't remember which way it goes but long head vs round heads some kids fit better in schutt and some fit better in revos and yes, these do appear to be the next thing www.xenith.com/#/innovation

the revolution is OK, we have had problems with them staying on the kids. So we switched to the Schutt Air XP excellent helmet, they fit like a hat, very comfortable for the kids, and they held up really well. would recommend them over revolutions

One thing about Riddell is that they have a 10 year shelf life. Even if you have used them 4 years, they will get rejected.

Big question here, Do all of you send your helmets in for reconditioning every year? I talked to someone today that sent their Revo's in every 2 years, is this right?
We've been sending our Schutt Air whatevers in every year along with the shoulder pads, cost a couple of grand. This is done by the A.D. not me, I am terrible as an equipment mananger. I do offense and defense, I can't do that too.
So y'all please help.

OJW I still play Minor League Football at 40.
I personally use a DNA I love it's fit and the fact that it is light weight.
I had an Adams before the DNA and if you need more bang for the buck it is a decent helmet.
My problem with the Revo is you can only buy them through Ridell reps and they are a pain to work with.

most of our stock is DNA with a couple of Riddells. We had a Xenith rep come in - the presentation and the helmet was really cool but at $350 per helmet we had to pass for this year.

I have started converting to Schutt from Riddell, as the kids like the fit better and the option. But for kids with large heads or for lineman, I suggest the Revo. But the problem with the Revo is the weight. That helmet is heavier than others, and for younger players, there is a problem later in games when they get tired and their head drops - leads to neck injuries.
For youth, I suggest the Air Advantage - its cheap but is proven technology and it works.
For HS - Maybe the Revo, but most of us in our league are going to the Schutt DNA - the players like the fit
Personally, I like the Schutt Air XP - you can use traditional masks and the fit is great!

Reebok is also the official brand of the NFL. How many kids want to wear Reebok stuff? Hold up a Nike Jersey and a Reebok Jersey and the kids will chose the Nike Every time. As Tog says, a little bit of both is best. I would err on the side of the Schutt.

Schutt Air XP's or DNA's. We have had some issues with Revo's.

I have found that it is best to keep some variety on the shelf. As alrady mentioned in this post you are going to have some kids with odd shaped heads. I have always leaned more towards the Schutt simply because of the 10 year lifespan of the Riddells. At may last school we were about 80% Schutt with the majority being the DNA and 20% Riddell. That combination seemed to work fine when we fitted the kids each year.

Big question here, Do all of you send your helmets in for reconditioning every year? This is what we have done in the past. This year we just sent in our helmets and we are cleaning our shoulder pads ourselves. Since the shoulder pads typically don't have much wrong with them we are using that money to buy new helmets. We also didn't send any helmets back that only had a year left (Riddell) and just bought new helmets with that money too. With the budget being tight, we can't afford to have everything reconditioned and still get new stuff. Our Schutt rep said we could just clean the helmets that looked o.k. However, with liability and all the stickers we put on them, I think sending the helmets in makes more sense.
