Initially most are fun shy So kids that aren't used to smashing their body into another can develop it It's just new at first
I was one of those kids, freshman year was my first year, I was terrible, 5th quarter only player... By my sophomore year I was fine and starting
If a kid has played since at least his Frosh year and lets say is now a junior, if he still shows no aggression and is a pu$$y he will probably never develop it
Some kids just come out the womb as soft serve ice cream

coachbdud how did this past Thursday go? Did you notice a difference on Friday? I'll update next week Our scrimmage was last night And we couldn't practice Friday because of some fundraising we were doing So having no prac fri we definitely came out sloppy as heck last night

We're a "Class 6" school with very low (relative) numbers. We've only got 55 players grades 10-12. This is a new challenge for us, as our numbers have been much better in the past. For you guys that have lower numbers, how are you getting quality scout reps? Right now, we're having to use varsity starters as scout players, which we'd like to avoid for possible injury and freshness sake. Everyone except the top 2 QB's are playing both ways, so it's not like there is a ton of time to install scout offense and defense either. We're trying to think outside the box a little bit. There has been talk of just going vs. bags in any scout situation in order to save bodies and prevent injuries, but we know the downside of not getting "live" reps vs. the offense or defense you're going to see on Friday. Any help would be appreciated. defensive starters play on our scout d all the time as long as they aren't an offensive starter, i want the best look i can have yes i could put 11 slappys out there and feel great about myself calling plays in practice, and our Rb would go untouched on every power but i generally try to have my starting 11 on O , a few backups who i know will play a TON and then from what is left i put the best 11 out there if anything make your team sessions shorter i would rather go 5 minutes with my 1s vs the best 11 on defense i can have (leave myself no backups to rotate in on O if i need to) and get 5 minutes of quality work in then to have 20 minutes of work against 11 maxi pads

We will be trying something new this year (starting tomorrow)
no more thursday walk thru practice
i've heard some coaches talk about it, suggested it at last staff meeting and everyone seemed in favor of trying it
rather than the helmets only, or shells only walk thru practice on thursday (day before game) where it is low intensity, trying to "keep everyone healthy" blah blah blah we will be having a lighter day on wednesdays and a regular full gear practice on thursdays
the idea behind it i got from Noel Mazzone at a clinic this year, and have since read that Chip Kelly has been doing it for years
Mazzone said they go lighter 2 days out from a game, and have a legit practice the day before... he said they felt going 48 hours between playing intensely (between last full practice and game time) had negative effects and actually hurt athletic performance
they found a more intense practice the day before kept them playing at a higher level
I read somewhere chip kelly used Olympic track runners as the example, rather than rest, they run hard the day before their race, and it better prepares them for their event
now we aren't gonna do oklahoma and go crazy running team for a long time, but i think being in full gear makes us more focused we will do a lot of individual work and a brief team period with a quick whistle
just curious if anyone else has switched to this format... more or less flip flopping your thursday and wednesday schedules to avoid the peaks and valley's in player intensity

also narrow your focus down when watching
most beginning coaches (youre a beginner at OL ) watch the ball too often focus on just your position
get an ipad or go pro or your regular camera or whatever and have a kid film all of your team, inside run, blitz PU stuff and watch it i know its hard seeing all 5 guys at once but doing this helps you to see the difference between when a kid just misses a block (itll happen) or -he doesnt understand the scheme -technique breakdown

try to minimize what you do
tell the OC, look I cant teach all of this yet and be any good at it... tell him to pick just a top 4 and say that is all you are going to practice for now
work the skills and rules needed for those 4 plays and just rep them to death class time film time everything
that way theres no more hesitation... everything we do is zone/gap based so that we can just be aggressive and get off the ball... worst thing an OL can do it to hesitate
so limiting to just 4 schemes helps them mentally pick things up... and INDY wise you can focus on what you want to work on that day
we run IZ/OZ power/counter
one day all of our drills and team are zone based one day they are gap scheme based then repeat
tell him he can do whatever he wants in the backfield... but your OL is only going to do 1 of those 4 schemes

The winter and spring sports have it easy
We have a "health bus" that comes 2 days a week from September on... Low income school Many have no medical so this can provides a lot of medical help for kids they just had to sign up It's provided by the county they get pulled from class Go visit the doctors in there and it's all free
One of their services includes sports physicals
So if a kid just does winter/spring sports they can get it done For free On campus During the time they're already required to be there

First of all we treat it as an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE so they get the punishment that goes along with that. They go to the bottom of the depth chart and if they don't have it by the 3rd day of practice they miss the first game. Usually we don't have an issue with this as we do sports physicals during the last day of school. I love that Get it out of the way ASAP Our problem is someone here in NorCal decided to have a set start date for football And a yearly date for physical validity Physicals have to be dated on or after July 1 every year and are good through the school year We have a set date in August we can make it mandatory (this year August 11) So we have from July 1- August 11 for our kids to get physicals ... Big window but it would be easier when kids are in school We bring a local DR in to do them for $20 one date before Aug 11 (for football) And one date after (rest of fall sports) We also have a chiropractor that's across the street who does them for $20 The biggest pain is the kids who want to go to their Dr or kaiser for physical... Takes forever for an appointment when they could get it done here ASAP We have a couple every year who cry and say they can't pay And I'll usually give them the $20 and make them clean my classroom or locker room to work it off

for shoes i only wear nikes
i wear nike free runs or free trainers
i used to wear more free runs but now prefer the trainers (more support, easier when you're on your feet all day )
I have around 10 pairs of free trainers (different kinds) and like all of them
I really recommend the 5.0 free trainers... i like the "finger trap ones" theres another design as well (oddly both are labeled nike free trainer 5.0
the finger trap comes available in just about any color you would need to match at least one of your schools colors eastbay offers them as "team shoes" and sometimes have more color options available than the nike store
NikeID even offers the option to customize them (more expensive, probably around 140 or so) and you can get them in your teams exact colors, and even put your name on them if you want

so my current take on it
Not as big of a deal as i once thought
i am hoping they cant the beginning of the regular season as everyone's scrimmage... which would give us 30 days prior to that we can begin padding up... which would put us at the last week of july
gives us pretty much all of June and July to focus on S&C... and some on field no contact type of stuff
which isn't that insanely different than what we do now
we didnt pad up until the first week of July this year, just bumping it a couple weeks back next year
theres no way we have ever gone 90 minutes of full contact in a practice and with the exception of working tackling drills, we NEVER take anyone to the ground in practice, it is all thud

yes they recruit
i don't know about actual DLS coaches talking to kids and parents but their parent/booster network is so extensive they have some one at most youth and freshman games around trying to talk to talented players and getting them over
when i coached at my alma mater (located in same city) one year we had these 2 absolute studs on the freshman teams one day 2 individuals came by the school, said they wanted to speak to these two about coming to DLS (do not know if they were actual coaches are just boosters/supporters) but they actually came on to our campus and wanted to talk to these kids about coming over
luckily our HC was campus security and kicked them out they just have so many resources even if an actual coach doesnt talk to a kid, someone who wants to see DLS succeed can and will talk to any youth or freshman player who is really good
I have even heard stories of DLS supporters buying cheap cars and gas cards to help commuting players get to school
obviously better talent helps, but they still develop players and coach players better than probably anyone else around
next best in the area is probably Tim Murphy in terms of player development

1. there's only one ball... our skills our loaded, best overall skill group i have ever coached. We have 4 RBs who are all pretty good. 1 has 4 d-1 offers and will only be a sophomore, 2 are big, strong, fast... the one who looks like nothing, is just tough and scrappy and was our leading rusher. We have 2 WRs that I feel are legit in both speed and route running... D-1 talent but without the grades. and we have 3 other WRs who are good and possess a skill set that makes them valuable (1 is 6'4" and is a great jump ball kid, the other 2 are very quick/shifty)... our TE is probably our best overall football player... not amazing athlete but best overall player. i know it is a good problem to have but i am worried about egos when certain kids dont get the ball... saw it some from a WR at our camp when he didnt get the ball thrown his way a ton
2. Lower level coaching, a constant struggle...
3. OL depth... I have my starting 5 and they will be ok, with 2 kids who will be quality backups that I can trust in a game... but I dont have much after that... would love it if i could have another for depth
4. we are a little full of ourselves... we were terrible a year ago, but started almost exclusively under classmen... we have more returning starters than any other team in our league and our kids know they are talented... but at times they slip into a mindset that they've already accomplished something... we have to constantly remind them we are coming off a 1-9 year, we havent done anything yet
5. coming together as a team... it isnt that anyone dislikes eachother, but they just arent together yet, we still have some clicks... especially between returning var kids, and new ones up from last years JV... they basically stick with the kids they played last season with, i would like to see them be together as a whole

We have spring ball Practice all summer Have a team camp 7on7 tourneys
2 practices a day aren't necessary
The craziest we will get is to have an early practice and review practice film ... Then BBq the kids lunch Take a break And have a practice... If you can't the film as a practice then that's as close to doubles as we will get now
If we showed up in August then maybe doubles would be more meaningful
It's like studying for your final exam... If you do nothing you gotta cram and pull an all nighter, of you've been studying and taking notes... You don't have to go crazy preparing right before the exam because you know the content

I'd really like to buy pink team socks from our apparel rep Pink but with our logo so they match Sell them to our kids a few bucks above cost And donate the profit

pre game warm up is the most annoying thing to me the little indy and team stuff not an actual dynamic warm up that part is necessary
i hate it, i think it has zero effect on the game
I would rather line up, have everyone do 2 live reps of oklahoma , national anthem and kick off
we are all creatures of habit, so i think we do it, because we've always done it... and everyone else is doing it

i don't care at all about that type of stuff
i don't care what color their cleats are or how many sleeve decorations they want, if they are within the rules, awesome
our colors are black and gold
so we will have a mix between all black, all white, black and gold, white and gold doesn't really matter to me

one year we played a team who had a sock rule, all players had to wear these long socks that went up to the knee (i hate long socks btw, the ones that come up just to the calf is my favorite look)
anyway their starting QB's socks were too low... he had their color socks on, but i guess grabbed a shorter pair than he thought... they were the mid shin sock, not a long sock... their HC benched him for not wearing long enough socks... i don't think i could ever do that

coachbdud does your team pad up for summer stuff? I didn't know that NCS was that nutty. We do about 3-4 hours a week of skills/drills/team without gear. Our section can only pad up for camps, anything else is no pads or helmets. We have DLS... they would do whatever they wanted regardless... NCS pretty much tries to keep them happy lol So rather than try to police all the allegations of DLS doing this, or any other school doing that... around 2004-5 somehwere around there NCS got rid of all summer rules... from the last CIF state event, up until the official start date in August (usually 2nd Monday of August) there are no NCS rules regarding practice we could pad up 5x a day, even sundays if we wanted to I will admit in the past, we focuses too much on pads and we got burnt out... last week was our first with any pads on, gave out gear monday last week we just did our usual drills and team on Air with pads to get used to moving and playing with them on we did form tackling as well every day as some CYA today was our first time actually popping some... nothing full out live, very quick whistle, but we popped in OL INDYs and went thud in team it makes our reps in OL so much better i feel, because now every drill is much more realistic this is latest and least amount we have done football in practice since I have been here, I feel a little bit behind with our team cmap beginning a week from tomorrow, and 4 quality teams coming in... but we are learning so much every day that the kids arent burnt out, they cant be because we have so much room to improve I do not know all of the other sections rules, but i know we have to be the loosest. I know SJS can only pad up for official camps within that some districts even have a 1 camp only rule, where schools can't use school equipment (school owns the pads) for a 2nd camp... the team would have to rent pads... which is pretty much their way of saying, YOU ONLY GET ONE CAMP That cooley act will probably pass which would probably put us all in the same ship for the 2015 summer

One of the questions I have for those of you who seem to be kind of "anti-practice" during the summer (not calling anyone out, I believe as much or more than anybody different strokes for different folks) is when do your players perfect their craft?
As posted before we have restrictions on what we can do in Summer.
Philosophically, and maybe it's because of my age, I feel kids need time to be kids. We can help them "perfect their craft" through strength training, conditioning, 7-on-7, camp(s), and especially Two-a-Days.
Practically, I am concerned about burn-out. I have seen good teams who do a lot in the Summer - workouts five days a week, couple 7-on-7s each week and tournaments on Saturdays, multiple weeks of camps - fizzle out come playoff time because a lot of the kids have had enough, just don't want to play Football anymore that year.
Personally, I don't want to start practice in August mad at kids because they missed something in June or July.

Personally I pretty much agree with your whole post I've noticed the shift in my lifetime from that idea to we have to practice everyday non stop football action. In my region of CA there are no summer rules, practice however you want... And I've seen it become a "keeping up with the jones' type of thing The top teams practiced more so others followed for fear of getting behind more than they already were... And now it is the norm If a HC chose not to practice til August he'd be chased out of town and blamed for being lazy lol

in terms of on the field practice (no lifting, running, 7on7 tourneys)
M: 60 minutes (O) Tu: 60 minutes (D) W: 120 minutes (split, 60 each) Th: 60 minutes (split, 30 each)
so that is a total of 5 hours per week of actual football
it has been a much bigger number in the past, but we felt we burned our kids out on football, and didnt put enough focus (from both players and coaches) on the lifting/running
we've had this schedule all June, and we will have it all July except for the 3 days of our team camp... those days will be all football from 3-8 (mix of 7on7, 1on1s and scrimmage)
We typically practice a little longer in August we start school on Aug 13 this year which just seems insanely early

Exactly Once the "summer period" begins Until the set season start date in August
We can do literally anything we want We could practice 5x on Sunday in full gear if we wanted
This is just our section of CA which is probably the loosest, pretty much stemmed from our sections inability to govern and punish teams who were breaking the old rules... De la Salle and others would cheat, people complain and try to get then in trouble, doesn't work, so then they start doing the same thing
Eventually our section just got tired of the complaints and trying to police it so they started this policy close to 10 years ago now
