Coaches - Hoping to get some feedback. Our program is looking at buying a Chute from Rogers Athletic. We like the ZONE CHUTE because we can get backers involved and run more drills through it as it's 5' deep/wide. However, we have heard of issues with the mesh material that covers the equipment. The TRAP CHUTE is similar yet only 3' deep but has a metal "ceiling". Anyone have experience with these chutes that they might share. www.rogersathletic.com/football/chutes/zone_chute.aspwww.rogersathletic.com/football/chutes/trap_chute.aspThanks for the feedback in advance. We're looking into buying a new chute too. I believe the Rogers Trap Chute is 5ft deep and the Zone Chute is 8ft deep. We prefer the Trap Chute style. We're also looking at the Gillman chute. Anyone have any issues/preferences with either the Rogers or Gilman chutes?

Thanks Coach. I didn't mention it, but this would be one of the exact cutups we'd watch with the team and then go outside and walk through on Mondays too.

I completely agree with silkyice. The most important thing you can do to get your players to watch more video is to create cutups.
Here's a screen capture of how we quickly makes scouting cutups to condense the amount of video the players must digest -

Same here. Kids never even get the emails Hudl sends when playlists are shared.. I usually test em all when the games are up... That text messaging thru Hudl. Does that come with the Gold package (or whatever the middle one is that has presentation maker) ? That's right. Texting comes with the middle level, gold package. I'd highly recommend any staff, Hudl or not, use group texting to communicate with their players. It's the only way to consistently get your messages to kids these days.

Mav, this seems like a great tool for offseason and preseason teaching. Would you send the link out to each kid? Post it on your website? anyway to run quizes thru hudl? I'll send the players the quiz link through Hudl's messaging system. I like to use the texting/email combination to ensure they get it. I used to send email and the kids would say 'I haven't checked my email in weeks'. The kids immediately check their phones when they get a text. I'll bet most of the kids will just click the link in the text message and take the quiz right on their phone. I'm still amazed how many players watch cutups on their phones/devices. Their attitude seems to be 'email and computers are for old people'

Here's the thing about quizzes- what do you do if your best kid flunks? I definitely wouldn't base playing time based off how they do on these. From a coaching standpoint, they would present the issues/assignments that coaches need to address more in practice, or what that player(s) need to focus on more. If a lot of players get a particular part wrong, that means we gotta focus more on that point in practice. It would definitely tell you which of your players are probably mentally ready to play, but that doesn't mean they should. Well put -- This is our approach too. It's a quick way to gauge their comprehension to allow us to focus on specific areas. I'm fairly confident it'll be a good way to check knowledge of our O and D playbooks in the pre-season. Not too sure if it'll be practical during a game week.

I think being able to use these new testing websites has great potential. We started playing around with taking quick screen shots of video to see if we can use quizzes to help get the kids engaged. We've done the paper quizzes in the past, but it a pain to manage. These sites distribute, collect, score and give summaries of the results. Maybe it's only 10 basic questions per week about the gameplan. We like the efficiency. We're going to try it out this off-season as a follow up quiz to our Hudl playbook presentations. Here's one we just started as a sample - www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=duxbury-formations-2011

Timely thread. Our boosters just asked if it was okay for our senior players to watch their mom's skits during halftime of Senior night. Yikes! Talk about distractions! Umm, that would be a "Hell, no". Skits? Agreed! The moms of the seniors typically do a little dance and song. No idea where this tradition came from...

Massachusetts: Strange football state; strong programs seem to come and go, but now the Catholics are beginning to establish dominance, top ten: 1. Brockton- The most storied program in the state; over 700 wins, was at one point #1 in the country I believe in 1984, huge school (around 4,000 kids) still produces great athletes 2. Everett- Currently the most dominant program in the state; for a state w/o a lot of D1 kids this program has produced many. Tradition is strong back to the 1930’s. 3. Gloucester- Won 4 state titles in the last 6 or so years at their level; wing-T team with very tough, disciplined kids strong year in and year out. 4. Longmeadow- Western mass school (do not play east schools in Super Bowls). Won 47 straight games and 8 of the last 12 CMASS/WMASS titles at the D1 level. 5. Xaverian Brothers- Catholic power with over 150 kids in the program, Hassleback brothers played here and won multiple Super Bowls, have went to Connecticut and NJ and beaten some pretty good people there. More recent/others 6. St. Johns Prep (Danvers)- Great tradition, 200 kid program, a slew of titles and D1 kids in years past 7. St. Johns Prep (Shrewsbury)- Central MA program, have and will dominate that region for a long time and years to come, sending TE Richard Rogers to Cal, other D1 kids coming the next couple of years. 8. Auburn- Smaller (600 kid) school that has dominated its level of competition, 3 straight CMASS/WMASS titles and 37 straight wins (current)- strong last decade. 9. Mansfield- 1A school that has several titles the past tens years, great numbers and production, play in a brutal league and thrived 10. Natick- A D2 power under the retired Tom Lamb, famous alum Doug Flutie had the school nationally ranked time, 4 overall Super Bowls, 248—65 career record under Lamb Good list. I don't have a ton of context, since I only started paying attention the last few years. I'd consider BC High in there with St. Johns, not sure how they compare to some of the smaller programs. And recently Reading has had a nice run, but I doubt they could stay on the field with the Brockton/Everett. Actually, I live in Middlesex league territory (where Reading plays), and Everett apparently recently inquired about joining. They were turned down. No desire to tie up one of our playoff berths with them every year, LOL. The small public school of Duxbury has been very impressive in the last several years by beating top larger programs like Xaverian and Bridgewater-Raynham. They also beat the powerhouse Gloucester in the state championship game a couple of years back. I think they've lost only 5 games over the last several years. Marshfield, Acton-Boxborough and Walpole have been impressive through the years too.

We recently bought 70 jerseys from Powers Athletics. They're not a huge commercial name, but they're a major US manufacturer (Iowa) for the big brands like Nike. Very nice quality at a reasonable price. www.powersathletic.com/

Just added it to my Christmas list. We struggle with developing leaders most years. This coming year is going to be particularly tough. Thanks for the recommendation.

When I try to look at the website on my phone a message pops up and tells me to get the pro board app on my phone. I downloaded the app and can't find coach Huey anywhere on the board list. Anybody have the same problem? Is there a solution? Thanks in advance. Try this- Launch the Proboards app>click Forums - 2nd from left on the bottom> click '+' on the top right to add a forum name>enter 'coachhuey'>Go You'll then have to login.

I looked at the proboards app. It costs $2.99 I think and didn't get very good reviews so I decided to pass. FYI - there's a free Lite version that allows you to read, but not post.

I'm glad to see it actually is Coach Slack's company. His stuff is always top-notch.

It's well documented that the Proboards search function is limited.
Here's a couple of tips when you get this message. Try limiting the scope of your search. You may be - 1) searching back hundreds of days (?) Try narrowing the search to the last few months (180 days) or 1 year (365) 2) searching through every sub-board unnecessarily. If you know it's a specific topic, try searching within the sub-boards (eg the Offensive or Defensive boards) 3) setting the 'maximum results' too high and/or try setting the 'View results as' to 'threads', replacing the default of individual 'posts'. This is the last option on the bottom of the search page. Often times you can find what you're looking for by scanning the higher level thread topics.

Mav, Is it relatively easy to burn a dvd from Hudl? It couldn't be any easier. In the Hudl Editor, open the playlist(highlight, game, etc), click Export, then choose DVD.

1) We have the players pick out their own highlights online through Hudl.
2) The coaching staff then narrows down the player's list. The players always seem to include every clip that they did well on. The coaches pair it down to 3-5 mins. Many of our players take advantage of the Premium highlight feature. For $25 they can add spot shadows, custom music tracks and trim the front and back of the clips.
3) We share the highlights and full games with recruiters through the Hudl Recruiter feature and/or create DVDs for them.

As much as we've liked our ION helmets this year, we're not sure we'll be staying with Schutt going forward. As many of you know, Schutt filed for Chapt 11 bankruptcy protection in Sept after they lost a patent infringement lawsuit to Riddell. In the latest news, Schutt's being auctioned off in a couple of weeks. www.stltoday.com/business/local/article_5c563cc9-0672-5ed0-8647-7a1cfc4bf729.htmlMight be a good idea to let the dust settle.

151 -- that's incredible.
And I thought my alma mater in Mass celebrating their 100th consecutive year (Thanksgiving Day since 1915) against their archrival was pretty impressive.
It's a fun week of football up here in the northeast.

I am having an issue with my laptop. Sometimes I get 2-3 hours upload time, sometimes 22 hours. It appears to be related to sound hardware/software! I'd be BS if I bought a new laptop that had this issue. Tell them to either fix it or you want a new/different model that doesn't have this problem. Absolutely unacceptable, IMO.

HDD, so it can't be firewired? That was our question, sorry for being so vague! That's right - HDD/flash camcorders don't have a Firewire port. In fact, Firewire is being completely phased out by the electronics industry. Even Apple stopped including a Firewire port on all their computers last year. I highly doubt the USB2 transfer is a bottleneck. The new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is about 10X faster than Firewire and USB 2.0. It's already been manufactured on a few computers and a handful of peripherals. Camcorders will begin supporting USB 3.0 as soon it's the standard on computers.

Why is mono price so much cheaper than anywhere else? The question is 'why are the brick and mortar chains so expensive?'. You can find similar pricing online, although we've been very happy with monoprice.com for awhile. The chains make the majority of their profits on cables, adapters, and other electronics accessories. Theirs prices must be competitive on large items such as TVs and computers, because of all the competition - Walmart, Sears, Target, etc. But these big-box stores don't typically carry accessories.

it is usb 2.0 mav. that is what came with the sony camera. It works fine but you can't use straight capture mode for hudl. Is that true? or is that just live capture mode? Is it a mini-dv tape camcorder or a hard/flash drive camcorder? Maybe just post the model number? If it's mini-dv, it'll also have a iLink/Firewire/1394 port. You'll 'capture' (live or from the tape) with this port. If it's a hard/flash drive camcorder, you'll attached the camcorder to your laptop as external drive and 'Load as File' from Hudl via USB.

Mav, how much faster will firewire download than USB, right now we don't have a firewire cable. My laptop is setup for 4 pin Ilink. I'm a bit confused - you have a mini-dv camcorder that you've been connecting to your new laptop via USB to transfer video? That definitely could be an issue -- especially if it's USB 1.0 on the camcorder. High speed USB2 and Firewire transfer speeds are very close, but I've never connected a mini-dv camcorder to a computer with USB to transfer video. I've only transfered still images via USB. Be sure to order the firewire cable online and NOT at your local chain. Here's a 4-pin to 4-pin for $1.73, plus shipping that sells at Best Buy for $35. www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030101&p_id=1992&seq=1&format=2
