We do not have an AD, only a coordinator. She has never been to a practice. Usually a principal strolls out once a year.

Had this huge freshman about 6'2, 270 walk past my classroom on the first day. I call him out to class to speak with him. Me: I was wondering if you were interested in playing a sports at the High School Him: "Yeah I was thinking about joining the badminton team" (sounding super feminine) ummmmmmm we didn't have a badminton team Few years later, TODAY I got to see him preform as a member of the dance team at an assembly

I have a good friends who made that decision this year, said it was one of the best things he's ever done. After hearing that there is part of me that has been wondering about the potential of doing that in the future. The last few seasons have really been draining on me and am wondering if a year away might be a good thing. That said I have no idea with what I'd do with myself. My free-time is usually spent doing something for football. Its really been crazy with the amount of "free time" I guess. I am the type that always has to be doing something. That being said, my garage has been totally renovated and even has different styles of molding lol. Yeah a little overkill.

This is my first year off since 2005. Former HC. My wife and I had our first May, 2016 and have another one coming in 10 weeks. Yeah, I know..... I'm busy. But I really miss it a ton. I've done more pencil on paper this off season than in any other. Been to some good games and visited some legendary coaches practices. Miss the game, but am happy with my decision. Hard still being around the kids/players because they are now being slaughtered. I have discovered this time period between 3:00-7:00 that I did not know existed.

Easy solution, stop playing the National Anthem before sporting events. We don't play it before the drama club takes the stage, we don't play it orchestra plays their piece... Sometimes the easiest solution isn't the best. Water and electricity also follow the path of least resistance

The players on and off the field are a representation of the coach. I am not saying that is always fair, but its what you sign up for.

I totally agree with it myself. A team that I coached for just had random players take a knee. Of course this is following a military appreciation game that I started a few years ago. Makes me want to throw up. Curious to see how it aligns to tinker vs des moines. Every student has the right to an education, but every student does not have the right to play/participate in athletics. landmarkcases.org/en/landmark/cases/tinker_v_des_moines#Tab=Overview

I was new to a program and was driving two half borthers home (same age) during the first month. One kid (total stud) was just ruled state ineligible. He was the in the same classes as all the other kids since middle school. I asked him what happened. At 15 he was selling drugs, found out his uncle was stealing from him. Confronted his uncle, his uncle attacked him. He stabbed and killed his uncle. Spent 2.5 yrs in juvie Definitely an excuse

Last season I had a sr. starting DB (4.5- 40 kids) with his mother come up 3 days before our first game and say "She's taking me to Africa" I was like...... "don't you need shots for that?" "Yeah she broke the news to me yesterday mid-doctors appointment"

Has this been effective? I'd rather be able to run 5 plays in the dark than 50 plays that look like garbage. Master what you do.

Ran into this problem a lot being a veer team. If you can't stop midline in the first half, chances are you are not going to be able to stop it in the 2nd with back ups. I remember many years ago taking a knee in the 2nd quarter up 49-0. Worst part was the opponent kept throwing and turning the ball over non stop.

everything is just click bait, but there is often a difference between sports. Jeff Ferrell caught a line drive at 102 mph to the head yesterday, but there will not be a headline that says "Ferrell says his goodbye to his parents at hospital, just in case"
I'd rather get hit by JJ Watt then drilled in the face by a line drive. And let us not forget about the peaceful dove that was ruthlessly slaughtered by Randy Johnson just 6,026 days ago

Glorify the linemen in any way you can. Another thing I did was I would have offensive lineman catch punts to end team conditioning. "If ______ catches this punt, we are finished with conditioning today". Every kid wanted to be an offensive lineman at that moment. Everyone would also have fun and be pumped up whether they caught it or not. Nothing like seeing 45+ swamp and carry a lineman off the field to end practice.

I have made special O-line shirts. Ask them to name their group and come up with a slogan or motto. Also went with first at team dinners. Had the idea of purchasing 5 recliners for the team room for film.

A few year ago the league suggested of creating a video pool and every teams games would be in one hudl spot. Old timers shot it down. Either didn't want to break down that many games, or felt like their films were some type of treasure in a indiana jones movie

With the kneeling and sitting happening all over professional sports it really has made me wonder what I would do if a player just decided to do one of these things during the anthem. I have always preached unity as a team (helmet under the left arm in a single file line). Has anyone had a player unexpectedly kneel? How did you handle it? How would you handle it?
I'm just curious about other coaches opinion about their/the situation, not what I should do (to clarify).

Over the past year I have traveled to hear a lot of incredibly coaches speak on topics related to this. They all said they have allowed their coaches to coach. Give them responsibility and ownership of a position or task. I really tried to do this for the fall and started great but then is crumbling. Can't keep coaches since none are teachers. Some districts don't see that as value and is hard to keep any long term consistency that way. It is difficult to develop a coach when if they think they have coached for a season and now they know. I can think back to my first year of coaching with some incredibly experienced guys. Was told to sit, listen, don't ask too many questions and learn. But people do not want to do that anymore, they want the secret facemelter or shortcut. Guys that want to be called coach rather than actually coach
long rant...... sips on whiskey bottle lol

We go purely off weight room attendance and weight room stats. I try to praise effort over raw ability. We take the number of weight room session attended (# rank) along with end of combine #'s (rank) take the average and thats how we decide. I had a mother furious that her son lost a number and already had it on his varsity jacket. her: "Its going to cost me over $100 to have the number switched" Me: "thats too bad, workouts were free" - drop the mic, then hit her with a stone cold stunner

We host several 7on7's and require teams to have helmets. Last season one team showed up without, we decided to go "helmet-less". One kid took an elbow from a teammate and lost 2 teeth while going after a duck.

Our basketball program is beyond awful! Has a .200 winning percentage over the past 3 years. They have a coach that is running an AAU team with too many kids (violation). Said something to the AD last year about it, nothing has changed.
