If their friends can't get them to play then no one will. Peer pressure and one last recruiting drive at open house for young guys (9th)

the old "beg-a-thon". curent principal won't let me do it It's not a beg a thon....it's sponsoring the program. You should also send thank you cards. I would rather do this than have my kids out shilling crappy candy bars, or crappy pizza's or cookie dough. Your return is crap, and your kids are going door to door and frankly that's a beg a thon.... you can even have a local print shop do a program thanking all your sponsors. don't put amounts given, just list the names and say thank you. This way 90% goes into your program, instead of 20% for shilling crappy products... I agree. beg a thon is what an old HC of mine called it behind closed doors.

Have each player send out a letter to 10 people. The letter should say something about your program, where the money goes. Have the player hand sign each one and hand address each one. Put a stamped envelope in each one. I am telling you if the letter is done right you will make more money then you have before. At one point we had 15-20K a year coming in. (120-140 kids) Send to local business, community leaders, but make sure they come from the kids. the old "beg-a-thon". curent principal won't let me do it

Found out yesterday that one of our players used to eat in the huddle during games. I don't mean that he used to sneak a Snickers on the bench, either. He used to tuck a lemon into his shoulder pads, peel it in the huddle, and eat it. Sometimes he didn't even peel it. This was the kid who quit on the day of our last game. Presumably, he was angry because, after he missed two practices because (I'm not making this up) he was acting as a costumed character at a haunted house, we benched him. That reminded me of a kid we had a few years ago. After he graduated we found out that he used to listen to music on the field during games. He'd taped an MP3 player under his thigh pads, ran wires up though his pads, and had ear buds in during games. So, does anybody have stories about kids who were particularly unusual? WTF...really?

I do 7v7 locally against coaches I've known for years. it's competitive but we are all working on our stuff. if time needs to be called and a kid coached up...ok. #1 goal is to get bettre for the season, not win some silly trophy.

Always be respectful? As the season wears on the please will probably be replaced with more expletives as I grow impatient and play the "what can I do without getting fired game." I kid, but yeah. spit my beer out...yes...

bigmoot Similar numbers, only 9th and 10th graders play varsity If you are a junior and not seeing the field on Friday then not taking reps from guys that need to develop i understand...but sometimes we have to use junior in order to field a jv team. like a jr tackle that will never play varsity but we may not have enough 9th and 10th linemen. sometimes is a mix and match situation.

IMO you've got to play sub varsity games. if a fresh has to be a blocking dummy all year he will not be back. they need to play regaRd less of score. I know we are gonna get killed in a few of our jv games but there are some guys who need reps, along with some who will never play Varsity.

Like - being able to film spring ball and reviewing it. Trying to get the crud out before the summer starts.Dislike - 6:30am start time....YES...doing it before school. I "like" it...but it also makes me tired during school. Best thing to me. Team is essentially set BEFORE summer.

Its not just football, other sports are a real problem in my area. A school hires someone to be the head cheerleader / softball coach etc. She does it for a few years then quits, but keeps her teaching job. She is well within her rights but it makes it difficult on the admin. They have to find another HC, but dont have the teaching slot. It really hurts the small schools that have very few if any teaching openings in a year. That's why some of these jobs should be attached to one another. Not all, but some. This slot is a SS and varsity assistant football spot, that's what it is and its expected that you do both and do them both well. If you get to the point where you don't want to coach anymore thats fine hand in your resignation for both and hope that you can apply for and get hired for a teaching only slot in the district or move on to somewhere else. The only slots i agree with you about would be PE. We have a guy who is eating up a PE slot and coaches nothing. the other academic slots shoudnt be tied to coaching at all.

I suppose the only other thing that makes me lose it is a student that is a flat-out sociopath. I have a junior right now that is absolutely brilliant in mathematics but she is sneaky, manipulative and will lie to your face without batting an eye. I caught her trying to get answers off of someone in the middle of a test. She was turned to her left, trying to talk to them and looking at their paper. I walked up, asked her for her test, told her that she had a zero and asked her to go to the office. She looks at me square in the eye and says "I haven't said a word all period, I don't know what your problem is." I caught her with her phone in the middle of class one day. The damn thing was sitting in her lap and she was texting while I was walking around the room. She saw me coming over and tucked the phone in her pocket. I asked her for it (as per school policy) and she looks up and tells me "I put the phone in the box at the front of the room, just like I am supposed to." She has pulled chit like this repeatedly this year and I cringe when her class period comes around because she's an absolute PITA. I had a meeting with her, her mother and the administration a few months back and she started off with some crocodile tears saying that "she doesn't feel comfortable in my room because I don't like her." I told her point blank that I'm not comfortable having her in the room either as I can't trust a word that comes out of her mouth. I don't take the test anymore. It takes too much away from the kids who are working hard. They get disrupted. I just give the kid an F in the book and write cheated in the comments. When they turn it in I throw it away. That way the kid has to come to me and ask about their F. They see in the comments I know they were cheating. Rarely anymore do they even address the situation. It's easier on me and the other students. Anybody else like the movie "Office Space". Dont fire the guy, just stop his paycheck...it will work itself out.

iirc, anything created using district property belongs to the district...I use hudl and it's playbook at school, the material legally belongs to the school.

it depends. Ive coached as an assistant in some very good programs and won a lot of games and championships. Now at this point in my life where there are some things that are more important. My children, the school theyre in, and the community i live in. I am now the HC of a school that will probably never be a serious contender no matter what i do. If we can be a .500 program, i would go into their Hall of Fame. We have 110 boys in school, 40+ play football every year, they work extremely hard in the weight room and practice field, but you cant fight genetics.
to answer your questions...i can sleep well at night knowing, I/we are doing things the rights way and it may only lead to a 3-7/4-6 record.
Now all that doesnt mean im content to accept average. Im constantly looking for ways to improve myself, my assistants, and the program.

Sorry to repeat some of the same things that have already been said, but: * The guys who tell you that offenses like the wing t, single wing, and double wing are outdated or youth league offenses and that you can't win at the high school level with them. * Kids who walk around 10 mins before you go on the field and they're wearing their jersey, then they're the last guy on the field because they have to put the jersey on their shoulder pads when it could have been done an hour ago. * Coaches who don't know the schemes you run, don't bother to try to learn it, but are the first to start spitballing "why don't we run this, or why don't we run that" at coaches meetings.* AD's who are more interested in appeasing pain in the ass parents rather than doing their job and trying to find out what actually is going on. * Kids who constantly lose equipment- knee pads, thigh pads, practice jersey, and so forth. * Kids who show up for the day before the game walk through in non-team colored shorts and t shirts. * Parents who know for months that a physical is required to be able to participate, and then on the first day of practice, their kid doesn't have a physical. * The parents that schedule family vacations during preseason camp, then wonder why their son isn't allowed to play in the first scrimmage or why they are on the 2nd team when the second scrimmage rolls around. * Winter and spring sports coaches who tell their kids not to lift-when many of those kids also play football. * "Open Gym" during the summer and fall. That;s a good one...ive inherited one guy that i cant get rid of. He's been at the school for a decade and will be there after im gone. He is a good guy, does anything asked, doesnt mind getting dirty, etc, BUT cant/wont coach his damn position. Type that if given a 15 INDY period, he will be done with all his stuff in 10 and waste 5. We get to Friday nights and he has all the answers to what ails us.

Don't throw those rejects away. Our course clean out the guts. Then decal and stripe them. Sell as souvenirs or give away to seniors.
