Ok, I'll play. I had just turned 19 and was student "coaching" (basically keeping stats and assisting with O-Line) my first year at my old high school. First round of the playoffs, we went up 7-0 on the opening kickoff and by halftime neither team could put together any offense, so it's still 7-0.
Cut to late 4th quarter, the other team is driving and down to about our 20. They run load option weak, DE bites and we have nobody there for the QB. I yell "That was wide open!". Head coach looks down the sideline at me and yells "No $h!t!".
I shut up and stayed shut up for the rest of my career there.

Anyone here have any experience in writing grants or just know where I can find some grants to apply for? Specifically I'm trying to get some money to build a track around our football field.

So a kid told me today about these helmet wraps he saw somewhere which apparently are easy to slip on and off and can make your helmets "look" different from week to week without changing stickers or whatever. Does anyone know anything about these?

Airraider, for what its worth, as you know I used to work at one of yall's rival schools who has had some good success and they have had kids "quit" in the offseason and come back. I dont think you risk losing the whole team if you let him change his mind, as long as he does it quick and works his butt off when he comes back.
As for your other kids not liking him, well, that might be why he quit in the first place. But then again maybe not. If he's a lazy sucker and yall's summer schedule is demanding enough, you wont have to worry about him once the season gets here regardless.

I've had my most success with making kids "roll", either by laying on their side and rolling up and down the field or making them execute a forward shoulder roll. It makes them nauseous, they quite often throw up, its embarassing and they hate it. It isn't running, it has nothing to do with being in good shape, so a fat kid doesn't get to slop around and half@$$ it. I usually give them some arbitrary time limit (you have to roll to the end of the field and back in 5 minutes etc) to make sure they go fast for maximum queasiness. Last year I actually had a kid QUIT THE TEAM rather than face his punishment. Of course, they let him right back on the team the next day. Then he failed off. Then they found a way to make him eligible. But hey, that's just one of the many reasons I'm not there anymore

I've said this before...But I used to work for a man who was going to run a defense he called "4-5 cover 3" every single play of every game if he could, and he was gonna teach the heck out of fundamentals in that defense. Proper angles, reads, steps, all of that. His theory was that if he taught the heck out of that, even if we were out of alignment or not in a good defense vs. a particular formation, there's always a chance that a kid might accidentally do the right thing just because he had been taught his fundamentals. On the other hand, if you're scheme scheme scheme, it may not matter how perfectly you line up every play if you have no idea what to do when the ball is snapped. Three state titles and myriad district championships later, I think this guy might have a good point

I'm lucky to be at a school that has a good football tradition. We have a few things that are unique and rather than list them, its easier to look here: tdfootball.com/Tradition.htmlWe also do a Pride Point system that is explained here: tdfootball.com/Pride_Points.htmlI get asked alot about what it is, and its just a way to measure your kids committment to the football program. The more they are committed, the more they get rewarded. This is good stuff.

So it seems like every good team has some kind of "signature" thing that they do... Whether that's a unique way of stretching, a chant, or whatever.
For example, we played a team once where, each time they kicked off, one of the guys on their kickoff team turned to their sideline and yelled something (I couldn't tell what) and not only their sideline but their whole stands echoed something back- Again, not sure what, but it was quite impressive. I know of another local team that has someone- a coach, player, a daddy, somebody- dip a bucket of water from a swamp behind their field every thursday and then pour it out on the field right before the game.
So, what does your team do?
