Depends on school and or recruit (4/5 recruit will get benefit of doubt.. Have a 4/5 star lineman that at school got in on off Core GPA but cumulative was lower.. Pulled some strings).

Core CLasses
16 COre classes only
Math, Science, Social Studies, Language.. Spanish, french..etc..
NO PE, NO ART, NO WOODSHOP, etc... Each school you have a list of approved classes by the NCAA.. CLasses like sociology might be in there etc... But the non academic classes like music, home ec, band, gym, art.... Do not count.
Starts in 9th grade... Though if you take approved classes in 8th grade they can count.. So if you take Algebra in 8th grade or spanish, etc.. They can count...
Math - Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II... Must pass all three English - 4 years Social Studies - 4 years Science - 3 years
Need 16 total...
Can not repeat past junior year as well. Need core 2.3 to be eligible freshmen year. SAT is a sliding scale.. Higher your GPA lower SAT.. My D1 RB has a GPA of a 3.8... His core is a 3.4.... His SAT only needs to be like a 600 to be eligible.. If your Core GPA is 2.3 you need over a 1000 SAT score to be eligible.. Not easy...
All Grades are the same.. NOT WEIGHTED!! AP or Honors do not get counted differently according to NCAA.. Also a A+ or A- is the same.. Just an A
A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 1 = D F = 0
Add them up and divide by classes.. Gives you the core.. Pretty simple...

Really Really hard....
If you have talent that always trumps.. If your jimmy and joes on the field on friday night are better that helps a lot..
The thing with an administration that is not supportive is it really wears you down. If you are constantly trying to get coaches in the building and the administration shoots you down, if you are constantly "battling and fighting" with them.... That can really take it's toll. May take months and sometimes years. It also creates an unhealthy work environment. If you feel the administration does not support you then you are going to be disgruntled, in return not support them. Can be a pissing match. Not a good situation at all. After a while I find most coaches leave or resign. Just do not get paid enough money to constantly battle with them.

That is a tough and frustrating situation. I have been there in the past with track coaches as well. If he is not on board with working out, etc.. It can be extremely frustrating.. With the coaches in the past that were like this I would discourage our guys from running track.
My current situation is the head track coach is our RBS Coach/Assistant Head Coach. We work hand in hand. After school he allows the football players to do football stuff for about an hour.. Lifting, Skill work, etc.. At 3:20 they go right to track practice.
He benefits because he has ALL of our skill guys running track.. DB, RBs, WR, etc.. He wins and I win. He works them hard in practice they increase endurance, etc..

Coaches Going into my 13th year as a head coach. This is the NUMBER ONE question I ask EVERY coach I meet at clinics, camps, etc.. How do you structure your high school practice. Knowing that some players HAVE to play both ways and that all of my back ups on defense start on offense, etc...
How do you structure practice where your coaches coach one side of the ball Offense - OL - RB - WR - QB - JV Defense - DL - LB - CB - Safeties - JV
How do you structure it ?
Thoughts, ideas, etc... I think this is the biggest problem many of us face as high school coaches with maximizing time and reps but still making sure your best players are on the field..

So if I am right Saban and Meyer have won I believe like 7 out of the past 10 or 11 national championships...
So if you are a betting man this year and you have $100 dollars do you bet Saban/Meyer in 2016... or the field??

If we are ahead we NEVER throw.. Again been there a bunch.. Up 42-7 .... 7-8 minutes in game.. I have my JV Guys in.. We just run our run plays... Something I believe in.
I have been on both sides of the equation and I have been on the other side of it too...
JV Guys get experience.. Varsity guys relax and stay fresh
Even if they keep their starters in I will not bring our starters back..

Hey born and raised and PA.. Play my high school ball in PA... Played on some real good teams 11-0.. 9-1-1...
No slight to PA at all.. I played against some real men and powerhouse programs in PA..
Unions - teacher unions in northeast do not help the cause either.. you are right too.. Hard to get teachers / coaches out once they are in. Programs can get stale.. good points.. I bet that does hurt NY in some areas too..

I am not saying it is the end all be all... By no means lot of factors...
But I do not think it is something you can just discount... no ... fact is that is apart of the equation... The numbers of african americans playing Division IA Football and in the NFL is substantial.
But other factors too help the south.. In the southeast they have good weather... spring ball... spring practice... football important in south... all of those factors...

I do believe what is being lost in this conversation too is the demographic make up.. Especially in the Lower Mid Atlantic South East Region (Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi..). States like Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi have over 30% of state population African American. PA under 10%, Mass under 6%, Vermont, New Hamphire... etc...
I think this can also play a role as well.

we do something with eteamsponsor.com/a local coach/friend started the company a few years ago and many schools in our area use it with pretty good success its like the old school begger letter but they send it out through people's emails and you can share the link to your school page all over twitter/facebook they take a portion of the money, but they do all the work, even come in and have a guy who shows the kids how to set it up he came in, i had our teams meet in the computer lab (freshman first, JV came 30 minutes later, Varsity came 30 minutes after that) and got their accounts all set up, and kids started adding emails they had collected from their parents, and copying pasting the link all over social media all i had to do was put our roster in hudl ... which we do any way (they use the roster export to get the player's name and email info to create their account) we made a little over 3k off of it i believe and it was not much work We used E team sponsor as well this fall.. We cleared around $7,000.00 dollars. Well worth it considering we as coaches did very little...

We got a kid that has rushed for 1821 yds and has 16 TDS in 12 games.. We are approaching week 13 and he has a legit shot of getting 2000 yds - maybe 30 TDS (He had 5 TD two weeks ago.. had a 4 TD Game too). Freshmen - 14 years old ... etc..
Does anyone know of the freshmen high school single season rushing record? TD Record..
I have researched and I do not see any player with over 2000 yds as a freshmen..
Just curious...

Our schedule for tomorrow... 4th time in five years we practiced on thanksgiving...
players report 7:30 AM - Review practice film
On Field - Helmets (Our game is friday) ... 8:15
Off Field around 9:40 ish...
Have 150 hash browns, 300 egg mcmuffin, sausage mcmuffin and sausage biscuits sandwiches for the players after.. Everyone should be on their way home by 10:00 AM or so...
4 hours sounds like overkill this time of year..

Well everyone has their opinions on this and they have been expressed. Nothing you say will change anyone elses and nothing i say will change yours...so this just becomes a value judgement thing. I am sure your program is highly successful and rotuinely wins championships every year.
i think it is where it is

Now that makes more sense. Now I at least see the reason why. So much of that is wasted time and can be done at home with hudl. Plus if you have a descent staff stuff getting be delegated and more efficient.
But with the boosters and high expectations those unrealistic hours now make sense
All do respect to those athletic boosters but if they expect these guys to put in those type of hours they need to be paid. Again 100,000 is not close to what they should get on the fair market. Multiply that at least 3 to 5 times...

Ok so you win a ring... At what cost?
the schedule IMO makes no sense and is insane.. The sacrifices of your family.. Etc. I am trying to figure out the logic. Those house are probably longer then many and most big time division IA coaches and nfl
remember what they get paid... Not to insult anyone but 100,000 dollars a year is not that much money today.. This is not 1985... Even so would then stoops, miles, sabans... Any of them do that type of schedule for 30,000 to 80,000 a year.. Because from what I read the head coaches are expecting then assistants to work these hours too
why do you guys in Texas not use HUDL and do film work at night at home or over the weekend?

Imo 100 gs is not close to being worth the amount of time you are away from your family...not even close..
so what about the other 10 coaches or so. They making 100? Hell no.... They are putting in insane hours too for a hell of a lot less
Not like this guy is making a million, 2 million, 3 million or more like the Sabins, beamers.. Etc.... That is life altering money..
do you think they would do that for only 100 gs... Hell no
I commend his work ethic but as a father I really question his Denison making. He loves his job because it impacts and molds young people..... What about the two kids at home. They are getting only 5 percent or less of him.. Walking him out to the car in the morning while he spends 16 hours a day at school molding young people and other peoples children.. That seems like a bad balance and not one that is healthy
i think we all know what he is chasing ..... Egos are big and often need to be sfroked..

Ok this is insane.. Video put a pit in my stomach.. Have two little boys similar in age.. Just made me sick to listen to the kids and his wife. Feel sorry for them. now bottom line...
Just saw the Dbs coach at va tech is being paid 275,000.00 a year.. Ok that is basically being paid like a big time executive. Hours at college level can be justified when they make that type of money.. I get it.
high school coaches.. Now way.. Even if they get crazy money like 100.000 thousand.. Still not worth it... guys we are high school coaches... 90 percent of us make 30 to 80 thousand a year. Average to below average money. How can you justify those type of crazy hours and the sacrifice of family for like 50,000 dollars... No way
what about hudl... We film every practice.. 2 angles.. But coaches can watch film from home and correct 9 on 9. 7 on 7, team...etc...why in the office until 9:00 at night? Makes no sense.

11 personnel one name
12 personnel one name
etc.. Maybe animals, pro teams.. something like that

Coaches I posted on here about my situation. So here you go
Got a 6'5" 245 lb rising TE that has DIA Offers.. He can play TE.. Also we go open and we are in 20 personnel (He ran 4.9 and both UVA and VA Techs one day). He also knows H back on our offense.. Can be off the line and move guy.. Power, Counter, IZ insert (Ohio state) and can flex out wide and match up against small corners. As a freshmen last year he was a all conference power forward.. Good ball skills and body control.
Have another TE/H Back Hybrid guy... 6'2" 218 lbs.. 4.8 forty guy.. Has D2 offers as TE.. Last year as a WR was all conference.. 35 catches 7 TDs.. good athlete.. Big and long. We use him as TE/H/Z... When he is the Z we can still motion him and use him as an H Back in 21 personnel.. He can insert IZ, Power kick out and counter.. etc... So we could look like 11 personnel with the 245 lbs at TE but his kid can motion and be an H.. or just WR.. He is also our BIG TB/RB in short yardage...
3rd Player... Dynamic.. Almost offered at UVA and Tech.. He is a RISING FRESHMEN.. Has not been in high school but is dynamic.. 14.. 5'10" 170 lbs.. Legit low 4.6 and high 4.5 at camps.. He is smooth, fast, cuts... real deal.. explosive. Tech and UVA just want to see his film this fall but will have offers. We use him at TB but also X WR, Z WR and Slot.. Really smart and knows all of them... Jet sweeps, Catches the ball well and runs fades and post routes... but is multiple
4th player 5'11' 190.. fast.. explosive.. slot, rb, wr.. knows all of the wr positions but can run IZ/Power/counter/power... can be a slot, X, Z and tb.. knows them all
5th player... Strictly Wr.. know X and Z
so here you go.. How do you call plays.. I have three guys that could be RB.. 2 of them could be TE.. two could be H back... I could be in 21 personnel 20 11 10
not rotate my personnel.. keep all 5 on the field... My question is how to label this or how to call it in a game... with this group I can be in 21 personnel with a traditional H Back, TE.. etc.. Or 11 with TE.. 3 wide and TB.. or 20 with 3 wide.. H Back and TB.. or 10 ... We could be in 10 personnel but make our Z the move guy (220 lbs) and still be able to run IZ insert, OZ, Power, Counter... Just looking at ideas on how to call this stuff...
have another slot guy who won the 55 meters in the winter in VA, won 200 meters this spring 21.4 and also was 2nd in state in 100 meters 10.6... He is a slot, jet sweep guy... He is strictly a Slot, TB.. Just looking at simplifying this group in play calling, packaging.

Like many on here I agree with most in response to their pre game ritual... Here is my experience similar to phantom
I do not like our players being too high or emotional before a game. We try and take a business approach. Our teams tend to be very cerebral and analytical. We rarely just beat teams with pure athleticism, speed and force.. We usually have to play smart, make less mistakes, make adjustments and we try and approach a game like a chess match. This is and has been my approach as a head coach for 12 years. I run the offense. Our DC has the same approach. Very cerebral, analytical and approaches the game that way.
We try as much as possible to take away the emotional edge and focus on the mental edge. We both believe that kids that are too emotional and too high make mistakes..
I agree with other coaches too... Players can get too high and often this can backfire in your face. It can blow up in your face if the game does not start the way you want it.
We all as coaches talk about finishing.. Its not how you start it is how you finish.. So if we put too much emphasis on coming out fast, scoring fast, etc.. And it does not go as planned the team could collapse or it could backfire in your face.
So like others have said I do not want our kids too emotional before the game. I want them to have a clear head, be prepared (Hopefully we did this during the week of practice). I am not a rah rah guy.. I have not gone into the lockeroom before the game and given a pre-game speech in over 5 years... I stay away from that stuff before we start the game.
