Making these percentages up, but you will get the idea.
10% of the kids will work hard and buy in no matter what. A’s 15% want to work if you can show them or make them. B’s 50% you can influence one way or the other - average kid. C’s 15% don’t want to work, but might with the right motovation. D’s 10% won’t work just about no matter what. F’s
Get the A’s and B’s going! Influence the C’s!
Hopefully the D’s will see what is going on and join in.
Forget the F’s!
Turn the A’s into A+. B’s into A’s. C’s into B+’s and D’s into C+.
They only way to turn an average group into a great team is this!!

The real solution is results.
Kids love results.
When their maxes go up, vertical goes up, 40 and 5/10/5 go down, you have them hooked.
It doesn’t take much!! We do two days a week. 5 lifts. 2 sets each (heck one lift can only be one set). Key is work hard and work consistently.

Tue/Thu 930-12. 5 hours a week.
After July 4th we go to 1230 to add in conditioning and recovery. 6 hours a week.

I’ll step up and do it. We workout on Tue and Thu during the summer. 930-12. Strength/speed/jump/agility training and then some football stuff. That is 5 hours total a week. If you are out of town (whatever the reason), you are excused as long as you told me beforehand. Workout is online so you can do it if you miss. Try and makeup lifting if you miss. Haven’t done a 7 on 7 in 8 years. Don’t start conditioning running until after July 4th week. Where do you coach? Tuscaloosa

This in your first sentence lies the problem. Football is a freaking game. Games are meant to be fun. If a kid is not out there to have fun and for the fun of it, then what the heck are we all doing? TO GET OFFERS COACH!! (Obvious sarcasm) I’m with you. I’m shocked a coach just said “I don’t want a kid who is out there for the fun of it”. Hold on. Hold on. Any statement can be taken out of context. No one wants a kid who is out there JUST to laugh or JUST to goof off or JUST to play the games. Football has to be fun, but if all you do is fun is then you probably won’t win much or teach much, and then football WON’T be fun. There just is a balance. We want the kid that plays football because it is MORE than fun. Not JUST fun. The kid that sacrifices, works hard, has commitment, discipline, plays for pride, competetion, and his teammates, etc. I could go on all day. And where the satisfcation and joy of having been apart of it all outweighs the “fun”. Just saying don’t crucify someone for a comment on the internet because we all know what he really means. I think...

We've really bought into the idea of "minimum effective dose" with our guys and are selling it everyday. I do think a lot of old school guys would rather lose than be outworked. Love it!

Who's gonna be the first to implement this "new fangled" way of thinking? Who's gonna be seen as a guy who let another coach "out work" him? I have coached teams in the past who could show up and put a couple of weeks of hard work in and be ready to go come that first scrimmage. I have also coached teams where we could have practiced 12 hours a day for months and they still wouldn't be able to get out of their own way. I agree, the arms race is killing the sport. Not only driving kids away, but I am sure every one knows that one or two coaches in your building who just say they don't want to do it anymore. Not only football, but other sports as well. It just seems that football is the worst offender. I don't like 7-7 because our linebackers bail at the snap but it does help our corners learn to defend. We're primarily a run team so they don't do much for our offense. We competed against a regular season team in a tournament and did not do well. Going into the regular season game the opponent was confident that they were going to stomp us but we ended up putting up nearly 600 rushing yards and completely blew them out of the game. A dad on the chain gang said he overheard players & coaches saying, "This isn't the same team we played in 7-7." So Defcord, the confidence builder is good but you have to manage it and know that things will likely be entirely different. LOVE THIS

Yep Fortnite is so popular not necessarily because the game rocks. They are geniuses in how they set it up. First, free. Second, can be played as teams. This is key. Social. Can be played 1 vs 99. 2 vs 98. 4 vs 96. and 50 v 50. Third, cross platform. I can be on an xbox. You can be on ps4. Someone else can be on an iphone. Our fourth teammate can be on a pc. And we can all play the same game. Fourth, it is a kill everyone last man standing game where you shoot and build and drop in from the sky and the storm shrinks you until everyone is close together. I don’t play, but all three of my kids love it and went crazy when they finally won.

All of these are honestly scams. People are making money off this. Create video course on something. Scare everyone. Lobby the legislature and/or athletic association. People making you take these tests don’t have to take them. Then charge schools and/or associations for your services. Unless you are an idiot, concussions, first aid, CPR are pretty straight forward concepts. We of course now also have to take sportsmanship, heads up stuff, dehydration etc. I could probably make a 10 minute video and 10 question quiz that would cover all of those topics at once. Do that one time. Practice CPR on a dummy. 15 minutes once. Be done for life. I feel the same about most education classes to improve your abilities as a teacher....and if I were in a different profession I'd probably feel the same about most mid profession trainings there. But if the people who are in charge can't come up with new problems to treat (not cure but treat) then they are out of a job. Its like I always joke with my wife about carseats- there is always a new study about keeping kids in car seats longer as a matter of safety, and thus a new law mandating it. Then you look and see who did the original study....and its the carseat manufacturers. Exactly!!

Isn't every spot always open? The announcing every spot is open just really means I have had it, and I am pissed off, and instead of teaching or correcting, I am benching your ass until I am no longer pissed off. LOL Surprisingly enough, probably not. At least not in a way that there is a culture of competition. That lack of competitive mindset combined with the entitlement mentality everyone complains about probably leads to a feeling of almost "social promotion" to starting spots in bad programs. WOW. That is crazy. My best players are more in danger of getting an earful from me than anyone. I'll sit them also. Not for long, but they don't know that!!

That's the best part. Whatever NFHS concussion video is mandatory every year. You take a prequiz (10 questions maybe?). I get 10/10 right every year. Have to take the course (30 minutes or so), then TAKE THE EXACT SAME QUIZ and get a 10/10. Why? What is the purpose of this? It's the same process with Cardiac Arrest and maybe first aid, accept those are not required every year. Take a quiz. Get every question right. Still have to sit through the course. Take the same quiz. Brilliant. I always score 10/10 on the pre-test and then score 9/10 after watching the videos. Hahahaha. Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

I'll be the Devil's Advocate. During Pre-Season we wanted kids competing against themselves to be best players they could be, and against each other for starting jobs-PT. During the season we wanted fast-moving, intense, enthusiastic practices. But we were never on our schedule. The focus was on preparing for Friday night. I didn't want to "leave the game on the practice field." So we did not emphasize "competition" in terms of winners vs. losers. You can only reach an emotional peak so many times in a long season and we wanted it to be on Fridays, not Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Spot on. I was going to respond earlier with something similar, but this is better than what I would have said. Only thing I will add, the older I get as coach, the more game week practice has become a rehersal.

I'll take a guess.
1st time is clock is stopped and won't start until ball is snapped. 2nd time is clock is stopped, but the 25 second clock will start when whistle is blown is ball ready for play. 3rd time is clock is running and the 40 second clock is now running.
Not sure why that is only relevant on 1st down and not all four downs.

silkyice do you use straps on your trap bar deadlifts? No. But not opposed to it. I think the grips being on your side are much easier hold then when in front of your body like regular deadlifts. We haven’t had grip issues yet.

Finding talent. Nothing else really matters without talent. While there is certainly some truth in this statement, not sure how it helps anyone high school unless you can recruit anyone you want from anywhere.

WEIGHTROOM
Quality assistants. I would rather have three that I can depend on even on the 6A level, than 10-12 flunkies.
Solid, simple offense, defense, special teams.
Best way to win in my opinion: Get kids bigger, faster, stronger. Get kids in shape. Kids knowing what to do and how to do it.

Thirty minutes?!? Holy *bleep*, I haven't been good for 30 minutes since... ever. I need to go home and apologize to my wife. Anyway, I don't expect my wife to be at games but she loves to be there. Early in my coaching career she sat with all the parents then she suddenly started sitting with another coach's wife in the top corner of the stands. Being dense, I asked her why. She said, "Because I can only listen to people talk about what a dumb$h!t you are for so long before I have to start kicking asses." My delicate flower, I love her. Definitely outkicked my coverage.
I had to allot some time for clean up! I was thinking you had to wait 30 minutes for the little blue pill to kick in. Just kidding. Just kidding.

I am really going to miss my wife this next year. She is going to be the cheer coach this next year. In years past she used to film practices, until my oldest daughter was able to, then she switched over to photography where she comes to practices and games and takes tons of photos(up to 2500 a night) She would weigh our players before and after practice and make them drink water before they could leave based on how much weight they lost. She would bring Popsicles for the kids on super hot days, has already brought them popsicles for spring ball this year because we had a 90 degree day. Week end meetings she would bring lunch for my staff. Helped the moms with pregame meals. My shirts for all the coaches wives. I know I am different from a lot of coaches, but I never understood how coaches could say we're a family, and family comes first but you never saw their family around. I have had several young coaches under me the past 10 years, and encouraged them all to have their family around the program, I don't want them to ever worry or be embarrassed if a kid has to come to practice. I tell them the first day, if you have a little one...throw em on your hip and get to work, we still have a job to do. Rare that you would come to one of my practices and my wife and kids not be there in some capacity. Oldest daughter films practices used to film games, but started cheering this year(ugh) youngest daughter helps with water during the summer also going to cheer this year(double ugh) Son is 8 helped a little with water, hoping he can be my ball boy this year. Every coachhuey member should read this.

My wife’s a doctor and helps us as a trainer on game night. I’ve only really pissed her off once in a close ball game. We were winning a game that we had no business winning. It was late in the 4th and our top running back gets a facemask to his elbow scrapping it open a bit and bleeding a little. My wife started to actually examine him instead of just bandaging him up till I yelled at her to just get him out there and ready to play. I bet she got him on the field pretty fast after that. But I bet you slept with one eye open all night. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) That is if you went home that night. Brave man, brave man.

I am AD. They don't have a choice. My man. And our coaches want them to lift. When you get a basketball coach who has 19 years of actual college experience (SEC/ACC) and a baseball coach who caught in the minors for 9 years, they get it. They tell the kids all the times to get stronger. Semi’s in football, champs in bball, semi’s in baseball.

I understand that chutes are designed to make you play lower. But isn’t it better to teach an aiming point on each type of block and rep that? muscle memory...bodies remember the angle and get accustomed to it? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) I understand. But doesn’t hitting the correct aiming point over and over also create muscle memory?

Baseball team made it to the semi-finals and lost to eventual state champs. Won first game, lost second game in 9 innings (hs plays 7), lost third game. The team that beat us went on to sweep championship series 3-0 and 11-1. So we did not start spring training until Monday. 4 days of practice. Last night we played the two teams that beat us last year. Both were 2016 champs and 2017 runner-ups. The second team we played already has five kids with d1 offers and have 3 more that might get them. One of our better players hurt his knee Tuesday. 6'3" 250. Should be back in 4-6 weeks. Anyways, we played both teams one quarter each. Finished up 27-0 in first quarter, and finished up 9-8 in second quarter with a stop on 4th and 1. I highly encourage every coach on here to invest in high handle trap bars and get after it. We have three kids pulling over 600 pounds on them and our team average max right now is 425. Starters average 487. Baseball players got after it all baseball season in the weight room, as did basketball players who won state. Our kids are bigger, stronger, faster. We have always done really well in the weight room, but these things are a difference maker. I really believe that. We can fly. The video at the top of the link is highlights from last night. www.hudl.com/team/v2/14720/Boys-Varsity-FootballHow do you get the baseball and basketball kids in there? We still have kids missing for AAU tournaments and pole vaulters that think they will get to big if they lift weights. Drives me crazy. I am AD. They don't have a choice. That being said, we have a tradition of chmapionships in all sports and d1 players. Plus, the start to jump higher and get faster and stronger, so it is an easy sell.
