That 10-year extension ND signed Charlie to last year doesn't seem like such a good idea now... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Maybe Charlie and Lloyd Carr should go have a few beers together tonight!

a few beers would probably make things look a bit better. Life after Brady can't be easy. losing to Appalachian State has to hurt worse.

saweet to see the over-inflated Big 10 Michigan get owned by an unranked in Week 1.

being a diehard Notre Dame fan (and I will admit bias and have zero arguement when some one points out how poor ND is),
IT IS GREAT TO SEE MICHIGAN LOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, Rome wasn't built in a day...Charlie's first "real" recruiting class are sophomores. Lots to look forward to (see disclaimer above).

there are MANY top 20 teams that would have lost to Appy State the last 3 years. Some have already come very close. THE Mountaineers are for real. Doubt them still....nut up and get on the schedule.

Tech is weak this season. Very. It will be a long season in South bend.

Well, anyway you look at it; Charlie Weiss has a decade to prove he's the coach the contract says he is. If he can't get the job done with a contract that will allow 2 of his recruiting classes to mature for 4 years; then he's done.

Appy State looked very West Virginiaesc on offense. NEver seen them play before, hats off to em. Im no ND defender, but Ty W should have had more time to make it work there, hes a very good coach IMHO.

I agree with the Ty comment that he should've had more time. I went to the ND- Pittsburg game his last year. The fans were really grumbling about him. I thought, and still do, that he was a class act and deserved better. That still won't help you if you can't recruit D-backs who pass academic muster.

I'm as big a Notre Dame fan as you'll find, and it was hard to watch that game. At times it seemed Tech just rolled through them. Ouch.

I'm a die-hard ND fan as well, but I wanted to shake that O-Line yesterday. That was about as painful a game I've seen in years from ND. Shameful. It's ridiculous to start calling out Weis, though. He's returning only like 6 or 7 total starters; only 2 OL and the FB are returning starters on offense. His recruiting classes are looking strong, just give him some time.

Weis gets called out because his team looked terrible...unprepared, outplayed, completely flat and listless...Weis reveled in the media butt-kissing he got after his first year and now his weaknesses as a coach are laid bare for all to see. And what has the guy accomplished? Has he beat a top 25 team yet? Has he won a bowl game? In fact, what he is most well known for is a LOSS! Charlie is all hype...too bad Ty didn't get 10 years to work his magic!

I agree with that wildcat. I don't know if it's a race thing (and I really don't want to open that can of worms) but everyone is willing to make excuses for Weiss after lynching Ty.

I don't have any issues with Weis, but I was a ND fan until they canned Ty without even letting him get a recruiting class through. That was a classless, B.S. move.
Darndest thing; who recruited Brady Quinn and Samardja; TYRONE WILLINGHAM.

Ty is a good coach........unfortunately, the state of affairs with coaching is politics and ego.
Ty is a good coach, that really wasn't what ND alum wanted.
They wanted Flash, Pizazz, Prestige, Big Name Icon.
Weiss fit the bill (after Gruden turned them down).
Nothing against Weiss, you gotta love his story. The biggest problem Notre Dame has, is Notre Dame.....they have to get out of their own way.
Lou Holtz - now THOSE were Notre Dame teams......they have been mostly primadonnas since then (thanks to Independent schedules, NBC, Regis Philbin, etc).
Did ND deserve to be in the Top 10 LAST YEAR!? Please......
I've got nothing against those upper echelon coaches, they are no different from us, just under more pressure and scrutiny. I'd hate to think there are parents out there who have no idea about our program or what we do, crying that WE are overrated and "all hype". Something about glass houses.

When you get a 10-year contract extension even though you have never beat a ranked team and have been spanked in 2 bowl games, you are going to get criticized, especially when the guy who was there before you got ran out of town for having essentially the same record. And these guys are NOT the same as us...they are highly paid professional coaches and media celebrities. Big difference between that and some guy who has a 9-5 job and gets a $2000 a year stipend to coach. I would imagine that the expectations for the head coach at The University of Notre Dame are a little bit higher than the expectations for Coach Legend at Small Town High...

Should Wies turned the extension down thinking he didn't deserve it? WEIS didn't fire Willingham as I recall.... he was just the guy they replaced him with. They are the same as us, in that they are football coaches. Personally attacking Coach Smith from Sweetwater High across town based on his win/loss record is the same as personally judging Coach Weis, Coach Miles, Coach Ferentz, etc on their win/loss record. Usually, there are more factors involved than just calling super plays and expecting to work magic on game night. If you read the fine print of the contract, I understand Notre Dame extended Weis to a 10 year, $30M contract was to be paid in Ice Cream. sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=whitlock/051101

th biggest thing i see that is an issue is this
some of the bigwig coaches out there seem to just call a play hoping that it is the right one
go no huddle
check out of it and get to something good against what they are showing you
why beat your head against a wall
another thing
think outside the box, or at least have some people around you that will
be willing to take chances
stagnant ideas and programs will continue to just be that
stagnant

Again, a huge Irish fan here, but by virtue of the job you're going to get some harsh attacks and criticisms. Irish fans were on Ara before he won a title and claimed he couldn't win the big one.
But when you're 3 games into the D1 season and you have negative rushing yards on the season then it's naturally going to draw even more criticism. Everyone wants to talk about the last time Notre Dame was 0-3 or 0-4, but when was the last time a D1 team went this far into the season with negative rushing yards for the season.
Then put that into the perspective that Weis was sold as an "offensive guru" or sorts. Yes, that's the media perspective of it, but it's fodder for criticism.
I heard a guy on the radio yesterday comment that to the Notre Dame fans this is starting to take on the feeling of the Gerry Faust years.
Again, I'm such a fanatical ND fan that my two dogs are named Knute and Rockne so I'm going to reserve judgment for awhile, but why Weis is taking so much heat is absolutely no surprise.
0-3 and fans will be disappointed; the media will feast on it\
0 offensive TDs thru 3 games and fans will be concerned; the media will use it in every story
-14 rushing yards for the season and the fans will be confused; the media has to search for something of comparable value to relate that to.
