As a head coach would you rather have extremely knowlegable coaches that are hard to trust or would you rather have guys you can trust who have very little knowledge?

I want LOYAL coaches who are willing to Learn. I don't care what they know if they are hard working and LOYAL. I can teach a guy what he need to coach. I don't want any nay sayers or backstabers on staff

Trust, one unloyal coach can rip apart your entire program. You can always teach people the game. Scout your school for good teachers that love sports, you can teach them the game. I have three guys on my staff that never played the game and are some of the best football coaches I have been around, it took a bit but they wanted to learn and they are now excellent.

You can get football from a book, character is hard to find!

LOYALTY. I echo what everyone else has said. you do not need to have any base knowledge or playing experience to be an assistant for me, if you want to learn, and you know how to treat kids, I can teach you what you need to know to be a good coach in my system. My wife would be a great assistant coach, she is loyal, wants to learn more about football, and knows how to treat kids. Although she might be a distraction, as she is pretty hot (as TOG can attest to). LOL Demand loyalty, disloyal coaches are a cancer in a program, get rid of them immediately.

Loyalty, above all else, is what makes a great assistant.

And I think it's important to let assistants know that above all else loyalty is tops. People do a lot of weird stuff to prove their worth when loyalty will handle it all.

I agree with loyalty but I heard a retired legendary coach say that he wanted an assistant that was loyal to the game of football and the players as much as anything. While he stated he wouldn't want a back stabber he said he didn't want an assistant that was only loyal to him as a person. He felt that coaches that we loyal to the game developed better and spent more time at becoming a better coach.

I think loyalty is more important. Loyalty is a two way street. I am loyal to the HC, other assistants and the kids. I expect the same in return.

I think the two most important traits an assistant must possess are LOYALTY and a great WORK ETHIC.

I second center. Loyal to the game and the players, because if so he will get better and help you without causing problems, even when he doesn't agree with you.

You can teach a guy the game of X's and O's, but loyalty and trusting someone is more important.

Loyalty and Speed are two things you can't coach.
