Coaches, our conference has released it's 2007 schedule. Due to school co-oping or flat out consolidating, it wasn't as simple as flip--flopping home and away games. Here's our issue--
We play our Week #3 game on a Friday (Sept 14), play our week #4 game the next TUESDAY (Sept 18) and then we don't play again until the next Friday (Sept 28).
Thoughts/suggestions on practice scheduling?

first
that is just plain stupid
whoever runs that league/state organization---or whoever set up that schedule is not doing what is best for the kids
can you work out on sundays?

Well, the problem is we have four divisions and last year it worked out as there were 30 total teams, but there was a consolidation and we ended up with 29 for this season.

I'll put it this way--the first and third games we will be considered major underdogs. If we could only win one of the three, it would be the Tuesday game. To me, that makes it even more frustrating. I know the other teams are in the same boat, but we are at a disadvantage numbers wise as well.

nothing you can do, though, is there?
Came from a program who's conference did that........mainly because four programs shared the same 'home' stadium.....not EVERY one of those teams can use it every Friday.....so you gotta split it between Friday, Saturday, Thursday night games, etc. Business as usual and just win on fundamentals.

We play our Week #3 game on a Friday (Sept 14), play our week #4 game the next TUESDAY (Sept 18) and then we don't play again until the next Friday (Sept 28).
That's similar to how we do playoffs in Nebraska (play Wed, Mon. Sat, Thurs....) but we do get a "full week" with that schedule. Just no rest. We've done a Monday or Tuesday then Friday set of games twice. Once due to a blizzard canceling all games in the penultimate (FINALLY get to use that word) week (and we had to win one of the two to make it to the playoffs). The other time was during 9/11 when all games were canceled (vs. #1 and #3 in the state that week). Since you know about it... AND know who you play, it might not be a bad idea to get an early preliminary scouting report on your week 4 opponent...maybe in camp, before you start to work on the week 1 opponent. Will they have the same coach, do they do similar things from year to year? If so you can get some of that in under the heading of "general prepwork" early, then when game (half) week comes around, the guys are at least familiar with them. We still do that with our week 4 opponent. They were the only team that runs a lot of empty and they throw it all over and motion and run Jet, rocket and a lot of screens... and they run a goofy defense. The first week and a half, I would guess almost half of the stuff our scout team runs, on both sides, is theirs. Once we get to our week 1 opponent, we focus on them exclusively (same with 2, 3...) but when we get to week 4, our guys have "seen it", so we are not learning at square 1 anyway.

Why wouldnt they play that week 4 game on thrs? I have to admit I have never heard of a Tues game before or the way those playoff games were set up. Wow I thought playing a thrs game after a fri game was a hassle coulnt imagine a fri-tues split.

That is good advice, blutarsky. Thanks. Thursday isn't really an option wingtol, because all teams have a Tuesday game, but some teams get stuck playing the next Friday, as in only three days later. It'a a mess, I know

You may package Games three and four together...depends upon the what the other teams are running...add some special wrinkles for game four...more vanilla for GAME THREE and pull out everything for GAME FOUR

That may work in all honesty, packaging them together. Last year, Week 3 and 4 opponents ran 4-4 on defense and had similar offensive packages. As of now, though, Week 3 opponent doesn't have a HC.

Looks like you'll have to go on Sunday for sure.
From what I understand of your schedule, the team you play on Tuesday will be in the same boat preparation-wise as you. I would start as early as possible prepping foe them..Scout their scrimmage and week 1. Take 10-15 minutes a day during week 2 & 3 to prepare for week 4. You don't have to tell your kids what your doing and why. Then that short week you can let them know why you have been practicing as you have.
One other thing is you may want to prepare something out-of-the ordinary for them---something very different from your base offense to open up with. Since their short week will keep them ill-prepared, throwing a curve at them may pay-off big.
