What is the best way to get other coaches on your staff who are not huge football guys excited about the upcoming year and spring ball?

I think its a great question without an easy answer, it depends on the individuals and what makes them tick. I think just being positive, enthusiastic and excited in the things you do will affect those around you.

make sure they are involved and invested in the program people that are micromanaged do not feel any ownership in what they are doing, and tend to just do it for the sake of doing it
they have to want to, part of the want to is the allowing them to

I think tog makes a good point. Give each coach a specific task that you want them to accomplish during the spring. Get them focused on getting better for when it counts.

Make sure you start off with a spring meeting. That way you make sure they have all the directives and nothing is left to chance. Maybe you know the old story about "Somebody" supposed to do "something" but it wound up that "Nobody" did it. Also, coaches need to be good readers of people. I'm sure you do it every day with kids. Adults are not very different. Maybe one member of the staff needs you to rah-rah him. Another might need you to challenge him.

oh yes roles and expectations are a must you know you have it good when people do their job and then people also just do jobs that need doin even if it isn't on their "list"
building a staff to that level is what it is all about duck is right that it takes all kinds and knowing how to deal with each other is a big part of it as well
basically don't act like a bunch of lazy whiny slaps and be a COACH

I'm curious- why would they be coaches on the staff and not be excited about spring ball and the upcoming season? A complete mystery to me.

aj, you might have a guy who is a big time basketball person. He may have taken the job to be a bball coach, but it was tied to a football spot too.
Another thing is that alot of times, people like I mentioned above might not know what to do or where to start, giving the appearance of indifference. Coach your coaches and good things will happen.

All great responses,
Just by being nutso about football will make others take notice. i.e. not demanding a lot but always talking about it.
If someone isn't as excited as you, they probably don't know as much about the game as you.....I have found that taking my staff to clinics in the offseason has really helped. They get exposed to the whole language and culture of football and get excited about it. If you have someone who is not in coaching for the kids and for you, then they could be a problem. In other words if you feel like you are constantly trying to appease them so they won't leave. Maybe you should get someone else who will be excited. You can teach them what you want.
Take care of problems that are out of their hands. Make coaching fun for them.
TEach them and then let them coach. Include them in decisions and invite them to become a larger part of the program.
Praise them for being a good coach, privately, infront of kids and in public.
It takes time......

We had our Spring coaches meeting yesterday. My regular guys are excited but our one new guy (so far) is working his way in. The other assistants all welcomed him, asked about his background, got him to share and open up before I even came in the room. By the time I started passing out the coaches hats and shirts, he was EXCITED. Everybody has to bring something to the table, but make sure you and the other coaches are making every coach feel welcome and needed. As other have said, give each coach their role/tasks/part of the gameplan and let them feel ownership!

Not everybody is the same- IM A LUNATIC. So I dont expect for everyone to be at my level. We want players and coaches that "Have a fanatical committment for winning for football games". Stole that from the Patriots.

I am almost in the same boat, the two guys have already made up thier minds that the new HC is a jerk and they don't like hime. They both had bad interviews with him and he tried to have them replaced...but they arn't going anywhere. That leaves me with guys I really like and enjoy coaching with but that are very dis-passinate about it to say the least.

give them a job. put them in charge of special teams. I believe each varsity assistant should be in charge of one special team. they are responsible for teaching it and learning it. gives them ownership in the program.

I sometimes feel like if I don't do it then it will not be done to the caliber I want it done. I am really fighting the erge to try and do everything myself and let them do it thier way. it is a normal thing for coaches to want to do it all. however it is impossible. see yourself as chairman of the board. the best corperations are the ones where the head man in charges deligates responsiblity to those lower then you. if you give people ownership of some thing, they will out perform you. make your standards high. this is not to say you do not fire those who do nto get the job done.
