Our current standard is if any player who plays in a minimum of 12 varsity quarters will earn a varsity letter. Some have the opinion if you practice and finish the season, rarely play, that you earn a letter. I would like to know what the general consensus is on this.
Thanks.

Being a small school who needs everyone's maximum effort each day we extend a varsity letter to anyone with us from beginning to end who competes each day he puts on the pads.

We do the same thing as iahc. If you show up, put the time in, and do the work you get a letter.

We basically do what others have stated. If they contributed to the varsity program they will get a letter. We don't base it on how many quaters or if they were only on kick off etc.

So, those guys that practice strickly varsity will get a letter. What about JV and 9th Grade team members? Do they get a letter too?

They need to contribute to the varsity for us to give them a letter. If they are one of those kids that only practices varsity but is there to just their and doesn't help the cause he will not letter.

Same here. If you are on the varsity team and participate in all varsity activities and doesn't miss, even if the kid doesn't see the field , he letters.
JV's and Freshman don't letter unless they are pulled up before the league schedule begins, then finish the season with varsity.

Our basic policy is the same as many others have stated - if you fulfilled all the requirements of being a team member and finished the season, you receive a letter. Sophs are only with us if they are getting significant playing time, so that's not an issue for us. If a player is suspended for any games during the season for any reason, they can not earn a letter.

Two ways to contribute to the team andletter: - Play in the games - Be at 90 % of the practices and hitting not standing 'injured' and watching. Exceptions made for broken bones and surgeries. The last rule reduced our 'injured' guys standing on the side during practice by about 90 %.

Here is what we have in our team handbook:
LETTERING REQUIREMENTS 1. In order to earn a varsity letter for football, an athlete must meet all of the expectations of a Trojan Football Player, appear in twelve quarters of varsity football, and be in good standing with the administration. Any violation of expectation one of the player section below may cost you your letter. An athlete may also letter at the discretion of the coaches if the twelve-quarter standard is not met.
2. In order to earn a varsity letter, all equipment issued to the player must be turned in to the head coach, and any money owed to the school or football program must be paid.

We're also a small school. The guys that are with the Varsity and practice or play the entire season "earn" a letter. We don't hand them out to JV's or Middle Schoolers, but we also don't use the letter to differentiate between starters and scout teamers - Varsity is Varsity. They help us win - they earn a letter.

Should have mentioned this in my earlier post. We give varsity letters to Juniors and Seniors who are with us for the entire season, or a Sophomore who contributes at the varsity level. We will give our Freshmen and Sophomores a JV letter.

We give a letter to everybody who's on the varsity roster and finishes the season in good standing. Who has time to count quarters? Plus, why shouldn't a scout teamer get something for getting the he!! kicked out of him all year at practice? Kids who are strictly JV get JV letters.

Does a varsity letter hold the same weight that it did 15-20 years ago? It seems to me that too often in today's schools we fall into the soccer mindset of giving an award to everyone. I still want kids to have to earn that letter. Everyone gets a certificate of participation, but not everyone makes the same contribution to the varsity team. I just feel that a varsity letter should be EARNED, not given. Did all players on the team letter when most of us coaches were in school? I remember how special it was to earn my first varisty letter award. It wouldn't have held the same importance if everyone on the team was getting it.
