My wife puts together a sack lunch for each of the players before away games, so we don't have to rely on convenient station junk. We usually leave around 2:00 for a 7:00 game (average travel is almost 2 hours). What would you recommend including in the snacks?

I'd say leave out the sugar stuff. Banana's aren't going to have much effect in such a short time either. Need to have players eat banana's the night before a game to get its good effect. I'd say a sandwhich and a apple or pear. With a bottle of water. Simple effective . From experience I admit, I could not eat before a game. But after...whatchout!

We are very fortunate in that our boosters provide a pre-game meal for all our kids. For a 7p.m. kick-off, we eat at 3:30p.m. The kids get as much fruit and salad as they want, a small chicken breast, some pasta, and gatorade. While the players are eating, we show some kind of college or pro highlight video. We then start our respective meetings.

Staying hydrated and having higher carb options are key. Lay off too much lettuce and fruit before an event. They can irritate the GI tract and have a laxitive effect. Some will contend that too much protein or simple sugar will cause dehydration, so be aware of that early in the season. Try to balance the snack as 2/3 carbs, with a little fat and 1/3 protein thrown in.
I would consider items such as.....sandwich with lean meat, pretzels, crackers with peanut butter or cheese, bagel, small container of yogurt, animal crackers, popcorn, string cheese, nuts.

We had the same pre-game meal every friday, whether home or away, for two years or 20 meals however you want to look at it, lol! Fairly lean hamburger steak, medium baked potato, green beans, 1 roll and sweet tea. During the games we had a choice of water, gatorade(only the green stuff back then) or a smaller cup of coca cola!
