Coaches,
Taking over the program at a small school and Im wondering where to start. What Im talkng about is where to start to get rid of the things the old coach did and imprint my stamp on the program, Ive got a few things down that I want to do, such as changing the logo on the helmts, new jerseys, painting weight room and locker room, and obviously a new offense, but these are things I want to do but am not sure exactly what I need to do. So for all you seasoned caoches out there or for anyone who has one this could you please give some insight. Kinda curious if theres maybe something out there that I havent thought of or just overlooked. Thanx

Ask Coach Calande to send you his manual. Unbelievable stuff that will make you think.

SLS is right, make sure that everyone on you staff is loyal to you or at the very least committed to what you are trying to do. Descention(spelling) in the ranks will destroy any staff and get a head coach fired for not winning if allowed to go on very long.

One thing to consider concerning the logos on the helmet or logos used now through the fieldhouse....Do your homework as some communities have had the same logo for years. Get a feel for the community and their attachment to the current logo and any other traditions which have been a part of the program for generations. I know of one coach who went in and changed the logo and it caused quite the uproar within the community.

Also, if you get in now....push Off-Season to high level. That is if you have an athletic period like we in Texas are forunate to have. Sometimes things get changed by alittle intensity. I really do not know if this is a change but I have seen bad programs become respected programs by having a guy that is organized at the top. If you have everythng thought out and planned ahead time might be all the change that is needed to make the difference.
my 2 cents for what it is worth....

All good info so far, as far as the logos Ive been told the previous coach changed them everytime the football team got new yearseys which is every 4 years so dont think thatll be a problem. Im in Ohio so we dont have and athletic period, hell I didnt know anybody did till I check out the Texas thread, would be nice tho. But the thing is this program hasnt been a winning program since 94 so I believe at this point I have the all clear to do as I please. But as far as organization I have everything laid out and organized and i t includes everything from the community service to the weight program. This is helping tho fellas keep the info coming, Thanx

Great idea to incorporate community service within your program! Good luck to you and work your program on a daily basis...if the kids know you care about them and have high expectations for them they will get after it.

unfortunately the athletic class we have is not paying the dividends it should be... 60 plus kids for weights and conditioning and they are one of the weaker teams i have ever coached. Plus, being on a 4 block schedule means they are only getting 3 academic classes during the year

modified or accelerate block?
on modified they can get 8 credits per year, which is just like a regular schedule
on accelerated they can get 16 credits.
now i understand that they loose some of those with an athletic period, but it shouldn't matter. i've not had kids who can't graduate becaus of an athletic period.
and if they are knuckle heads, put them in class and outta the athletic period. our best wr last year (district offense mvp) didn't practice with us until after school because he was behind on credits.
my 2 cents, fwiw
