Question? I started at a new high school this year. Traditionally this team has been a powerhouse in their conference. This year for some reason our best athletes are out wandering the halls instead of being on the field. The result is that we are low on numbers and talent. What are some ideas y'all have for getting these guys out? Without giving in too much or angering the team that has been there?

It's your job to teach the greatest sport of mankind. You are doing the kids a favor by "recruiting" them. You need all the athletes you can to field the best football team you can. That is your duty, to your school, kids, and parents. If the "team that has been there" has a problem with inner-competition, then they only care about themselves and not the greater good of the program.
How to recruit the "halls"? Age old question, though. Things we have done, was just stop them in the halls and either; ASK them "WHY AREN'T YOU OUT FOR FOOTBALL!?" - challenge Encourage them "Hey, Jack, you ever thought about football? We could really use you out there, you'd have a lot of fun...you know 'Jim', right? He's out for football...." The biggest obstacle kids have in trying a new sport is they just don't know enough about it to form an opinion. Tell them they will be better off because of it, that they can't do without it....what ELSE (worthwhile) are they going to do, anyway?
The REAL Question is....how come this wasn't done in the off-season? THAT's when you recruit.
