We have run the flexbone but are now SBV. 2 questions: 1) You have a def. lineman just outside your tackle and as the diveback hits inside him, he starts sliding out just outside your tackle probably taking the QB. Our divebacks have widened and tried to run outside him. I know it's should be a give read but it's borderline. Shouldn't the dive back still hug the tackle's rear and run through the def. lineman's inside shoulder? 2). How much of a must for the total package is a double option that looks like a veer but the diveback blocks/cuts the usual dive read and the QB options the pitch read with the pitchman? Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand the back widening, he should stay on the same dive track all of the time regardless of what the read key is doing. You want the DE to come down and crash the FB, not the FB going to him....as far as double options instead of triple (veer), I'm against the idea of them, if we are going to run veer, then we are going to run it correctly as a triple.., just my opinion. We do run other options as a double, such as QB counter and speed, but we don't "tone down" our triples into doubles....

We don't run split back veer any more, but I agree with jhanawa on the concept of triple. I think of the veer as an inside out concept in that the first option (veer path) must be dealt with; it presents and immediate threat to the defense's integrity. From there the QB makes his reads and goes. As to double options, load and speed are good, but they are different concepts, and midline can be run as a double also, depending on what you want to do with it (some run it only as a double).
Sounds like your description is OSV (??) We want the back tracking to his aim point and making his cut depending on what he sees; but, we don't want him changing his path. If we are having problems we need to block it better or we're just getting whipped by better people.

Send a PM to CoachJaz, I think he runs the SBV.

1. The dive back should hug the rear of whatever his aimpoint is, the midline of the guard on IV or the midline of the tackle on OV. Make the diveback run this path regardless of what the defense does.
2. I think this is very important, not as important as IV or OV, but you need to be able to get to the perimeter with a play that "looks" like IV to the defense.

The double in question has base blocking by the PST on the usual read key and the diveback goes through the oine and blocks the playside ILB. The only double we run at present are the speed and midline.
