Can anyone give me some ideas on working with a small squad that plays in a league with teams that have many more kids. I am trying to figure out ways to maximize practice and minimize injuries. We will have a lot of kids going both ways.
How do you handle the importance of special teams when you have alot of kids going both ways and you are looking to give kids a rest?

There are many different ways to organize practice. We are in a very similar situation - small school (about 30 on varsity) in a league with much larger schools. We organize our practice week as follows:
Monday - Full Gear - Offense Install and special Teams Tuesday - Full Gear - Defense Install and 2 special teams Wednesday - Full Gear - Offense Review & polish Thursday - Shells - Defense Review, Offense 2 minute, Review all Special Teams Friday - Game Saturday - Video and Run/Skills

We are small in a district with other smalls. Our typical (in season) schedule is: Mon- AM: Film, game plan/scouting report review, conditioning PM: JH and JV game Tue KO/KOR (20 min.), Defensive Position groups (15-30 min., depends on what we need) Team O 20 min. Team D 25-20 min. Wed- Punt/PR (20 min.), Offensive Position groups (same format as D), Team D 20 min. Team O 30 (or more... I am the OC too ) Thurs- about 45 min. on specials, Pre-Game We go full pads every day (except Mon. AM). We do not go very hard on Thurs. though. Almost all our guys play both ways. RE: Specials. KOR is where we give guys a rest and get a lot of "workers" in. Punt and KO we have the fastest, best tackling people we can put on (usually all LB-DB types). PR is basically our defense. We are very conservative when it comes to special teams.
