I find mixing up the cadence is a great way to screw up the D. But I need more ideas on the different types of cadences people use, and there is just not much out there on it.
How do you use your cadence?
How do you train non-rhythmical?
How do you change it up?
How do you call it? To the QB? In the huddle? At the line?
I want to add a bit more than going quick and long....

cadence can be a weapon....mixing up the timing of it, the snap count, etc.
the #1 thing (in my opinion) about your cadence is that is has a natural way for you to check plays or audible.

We go pretty simple. We use Down - Color - Number - Color - Number - Go - Go - Go. We can go on anyone of them. The QB usually decides what to go on. Their are times we use a predermined count like if we use motion we would go on 1st or 2nd go. In the huddle the QB Will say something like "24 power 2nd color 2nd color" we break the huddle and go to the line. The cadence would go "Down (everyone gose in 3 point stance but we coach them to already go down becouse we go on down sometimes.) Blue 2 Blue 2. The ball gets snapped. We do have check with me's and and check offs that use special colors that are only used for audibles. Like White would be a live color. Also used is a hard count where the QB will emphisis any of the colors numbers or go's also used is a silent count where only down is said at the line and the center snaps it whene he feels pressure from the QB's hands. We try to keep it simple.

We use:
Ready... (OL and QB get set)
Set... (If any motion)
Go... ( fire out)
We can go on ready, or set. Sometimes will give a hard count.

Wow, this season I learned an EXCELLENT Cadence system, that you can use as different sounding one to mix it up. We called it brown count.
QB sets, and starts doing..
huthuthuthuthtuhtuhtuhtuhtuthtuthuthuthtu...bout as many huts as you can think of, and will say brown , the following sound the ball will be snapped. We mixed colors, and would say different colors and follow it with the snap color...like
Hut hut hut...red...hut.. Green, hut, (snap) <---green count

We use two, the first is our short cadence, down, set, hut, hut, hut, can go on any of them. The second is our flag cadence, Red, White, Blue. We use: Down, color #, color #, set, hut, hut, hut,......red would be the first hut, white second, blue third....When calling the cadence we use a different color at the line of scrimmage than what is called, for instance if Trips Rt, 24 Zone on Red were called, we would go to the line and say something like: Down, Blue 55, Blue 55, set, hut. If we used the same color as called in the huddle, the play would be changed such as; Trips Rt 24 Zone on Red, down, RED 55, RED 55, Set, Hut....the play has been changed to 55 (55 okie, our outside veer) because the same color was used. We only use certain plays to check to based on the opponents scouting report. We also use this as a check with me system; Duece Rt, check with me on Blue. We go to the line, assess the defense and call; Down, Blue 29, Blue 29, set, hut, hut, hut....play is 29 Toss Sweep. Practice wise we practice this in our no huddle two minute drill on air so that we get a ton of reps, we also mix it into our team offensive session with a good portion of our time dedicated to it.

we use no cadence. a ready signal is given to the center and he snaps the ball whenever he's ready. is really good for keeping the dl from guessing because the center varies the snap on every play, there is really no way for the snap to happen at the same time ever.

Peg,
Do you use no cadence because you are in the Gun most of the time?
If not I just don't like that. I think the advantage we have on offense is that we know what the snap count it. The only problem is when it gets predictable and now the D can take advantage of it. But I think having a cadence is great as you can exploit the offense. However I do see your point about no cadence, but I would do that mainly in the gun and sometimes under center, but not all the time...

my bad. we are gun about 80% of the time. when we get under we use a traditional cadence like everyone else.

Lol yeah that makes sense.
So you just use the QB foot to let the center know he is ready then he snaps it when he wants?
Do you try the thing where the center looks up, then looks down again? Alot of defenses key the center after he looks up for movement to get off on and if he looks back down I have seen teams jump offside (esp when its an automatic penalty in HS).
Hope that made sense...

we usually have a pretty smart guy at center and have been good at keeping the dl honest. he brings his head up and might hold it for a while before he snaps it so they really can't key his head, although it happens sometimes.
