See the subject.
Ask because we can't kick deep very well. Inconsistent kickers, coverage unit can't rely on depth landmarks bc ball goes wherever, etc. But one of our kickers is a flippin wizard at onsides. He can kick cross body, dribblers that stay right between his feet, short high off-the-ground pops, all of it.
So we stopped kicking deep. We onside kick until the opponent adjusts, then we kick over them and cover. NBD, we do it to make other teams have to abandon their return plans.
One of our opponents never adjusted. We were up 21-0 before they ever got the ball, and only bc they recovered an onside. We went 4-5 on onsides. Only let up when the benches emptied (backups can't do onsides).
On one hand, it's fun to be able to let a kid shine and attack a team in a unique way. On the other hand, it feels kind of mean. On the third hand, we've shown on film. That we WILL stop if you simply bring guys up. That's all you have to do.
I dunno. We're not going to stop, just curious what people think.

Maybe one of the lost components of the game.... coach to what your kids CAN do, not to what you think they SHOULD do.

when other teams had speed and we didn't, we squib kicked a lot, to try to prevent returns. when we had a kicker who could do lots of types of kicks, we also pooch kicked a lot (kick it very high, to around the 20) for the same reason.
on side kicks gave up too much field position.

Yeah if they fumbled every time you tried to strip them you wouldn't feel bad about it. Creating turnovers is good football, don't stop.
We're relatively aggressive on kick off, but not as much as the OP. But we have done it twice in a game a few times. Probably could have more but these teams sucked and the games were quickly out of hand.
