3rd, I will run the clock out when the game is decided, but if you play man and put too many for us to block in the box, I'm throwing it, period. I'm not running my backup RB into your unblocked starting FS. Thats actually a good point. A few seasons ago we were up big, JV team goes in while the opponent leaves their starters in. HC tells me "lets just run the clock and get out of here", well they play their Safeties 4 yds off the ball and blitz their LBs. Their Seniors vs my Freshmen, ok fine. So we stop running off tackle, throw a pass on them for a TD and run Buck repeatedly for a long drive and eventually punch it in with a Freshman FB who is really our 3rd Guard. Score was way out of hand but they asked for it. Maybe im a jackass? Not a jack ass at all. The play calling is your way of talking to their staff. I even shut off the RPO's once the score is bad. Our plays have an RPO built in, it's not an "add-on" to the play, but we can "add-on" "Block for run away," and we do once the game is over. But I'll turn em right back on if noone is covering #2 because he's too busy coming off the edge. I feel like the DC should be able to see "They've taken out their 1's, and they're handing it off and just blocking," and understand what I'm doing. If you put one of my 2s or 3s in a position where I need to protect him by play call, I will.

I don't think you're in the wrong. You're calling it as if the #1s were still in because you're responding to their bullchit. And, trying to keep your younger guys healthy.

This may be off-topic but it is a consideration for some.
At my next-to-last HC job (big school, enrollment 1700+) we had 40-50 kids on Varsity every year but one.
With Running Clock even in blowouts it's hard to get all those kids into the game.
If you don't have blowouts it's impossible.
We two-platooned as much as possible but even so in a typically or normally competitive game we probably played more like 25-30 if that.

Here the thing. Everything goes around. Memories are long. I remember every coach I went against. If he ran it up.on me when the time comes I will do it to him. Kids don't need to be humiliated. I had a team of a lot of lineman and not much for linebackers and dbs. He kept passing the ball even when the were up decent. My team was never going to beat his team. It was one of the best in the state. I do remember him and if we cross paths and I can smoke him then it may happen. I think we all need to remember your job depends on a 14 to 18 kid. Now add a coach that wants to get some glory and rub it in. It will be remembered.

There are a lot of layers to unpeal here. The topic has come up countless times since my time began in 2009 in one way, shape, or form.
I've lost a diamond anniversary 75-0. We played tight box Cover 1 all night and they were throwing fades in the last minute. But that was our game plan b/c we were awful. Thanked the coaches for a good game.
Fortunately been on the good side of some wallops, and we subbed and still 'played our game'.
Like some said generally speaking we wanted to run out the starters for the start of the 3rd quarter just to get that playoff push ready.
Also like some have said, substitutes liberally. Also as some have said, play the game to protect your players... regardless of the situation.
But not said on this thread but I've heard it here and I apologize that I can't quote the author, but the best statement I've heard along the lines of 'running up the score' is this
You can't coach the other sideline. You need to not be thinned skinned to worry about the wrath of their coaches/fans and do what is in the best interest of your program...... that is the one that pays your salary.

had one game we were winning by a bunch, score got up to 50. the other team's kids were being dicks (from the beginning of the game), late hits, shoving, mouthing, etc... and the coaches weren't doing anything about it. might have been encouraging it.
i (the dc) asked the hc if we were gonna back off. his answer was, we're gonna make 'em quit acting that way. when they quit, we'll quit scoring.
i'm probably supposed to be ashamed, but i gave a fist pump to that. i felt exactly the same way.
don't remember the final, but it ended up 60-70+, and they finally quit acting that way. we pulled off as soon as they did.
score could have been higher. it was early 4th quarter when they finally started acting decent.

My HS coach was the classiest coach I've ever been around; always took his foot off the gas around 28-0, always said a prayer for the opponents, even actively rooted for them to get some points on the board at the end of the game because those other coaches work hard and need to have some success too.
We played a big rivalry game at the end of the year and they ran up close to 300 yards worth of unsportsmanlike conduct and personal foul penalties if I remember it right. It was so bad that the officials stopped the game several times and lectured the captains (of both schools) about sportsmanship even though it was all one-sided.
He never pulled the starters and it ended up 77-0. He then proceeded to march across the field and absolutely rip their HC a new a$$.
Imo that was pretty well-deserved as both players and coaches were complicit in it.
The big thing I try to remind myself of in most cases is that while the coaches may be douchebags the kids on that other sideline have usually never done anything to deserve having it run up on them, as tempting as it may be to try and run it up on the coach.
