Can a player progress through the phases without being in practice. If they progress through phase 1 on Friday, can they go through phases 2 & 3 over the weekend? Can’t find anything that explains that. Thanks in advance.

Can’t find anything that explains that. Thanks in advance. We always did that. But the player HAD to meet with the trainer on those days for them to count. As long as you document, you should be fine.

You have to be symptom free before beginning the return to play protocol.

For concussion, once you are symptom free you can begin the protocol. We have Saturday morning treatment and Sunday afternoon treatment.

I don’t know, I would leave that up to the trainer. I’m not deciding when a player is able to return to play.

I'm the 9th grade HC and I've told my kids time and time again: There are 2 people that will tell you if you can play or not; me and the trainers. If you are injured, the trainers decide. If you do stupid stuff, then I decide. This closely mirrors what the varsity HC says to the varsity squad.

I think he is just asking if Saturday and Sunday can count as days. If the trainer meets with them on those days and follows proper protocol and documents it, then yes is the answer.

Such is the dynamics of a message board..... Question posed. Answers made. Semi-related answer/question juxtaposed. Tangent created. Sorry if I screwed the pooch.

Whenever a player had a concussion when I was HC, I asked the trainer the soonest he could return. They gave me a day and that would only change if he continued having symptoms. My point is ask the trainer, not this message board. It’s probably different state to state and also school to school. If the weekend would count and I told the trainer, then I’m sure the trainer’s employer and administration would have to discuss additional pay for working weekends.

That's the boat I'm in. No trainer. At least during the week. We have one for games. She's a teacher on campus, but doesn't seem to be interested in the extracurricular B.S. M-Th. So I have to error on the side of caution. protocol has to be done at practice so I can monitor them.

I would not take a HFC job that did not have an ATC.
I'm the Head COACH, my assistants are COACHES.
Not Sports Medicine Professionals.
Especially in this day and age.
If the school doesn't care enough about the athletes-program to have a trainer, they don't care period.
