I lost one of my mentors yesterday to cancer; way too soon. I doubt anyone here knows of him. He might not have taught me a lot of football, but he taught me a lot of how to be a football coach.
RIP Jim

RIP Jim Sorry to hear coach... I'm about to lose one of mine. A student assistant coach and RA at the college I played for who helped me through some stuff just posted on Facebook Sunday that he has a rare form of ocular cancer with no known cause and it has spread to his brain and other areas. "My fight is coming to a close and I wanted to let everyone know..." is how he worded it. It's been a rough few days, so I feel for you coach. It isn't fun.

The days are long but the years fly by.
Treasure the people (family, friends, mentors) who matter every chance you get.

it is remarkable what a powerful mentor can have on lives. We all have a finite physical existence - celebrate the impact you and others have on the world around them. I lost my coaching mentor / best friend a decade ago and there isn't a day that goes by that I'm not reminded of how he influenced the way I even look at life today, not related to football. Point being is that this guy's experience was transferred to me (that hopefully I have been able to pass on to others in some capacity) that he continues LIVING after his 'body' is gone. He grinded endlessly as a GA the old way and he took it personal. You couldn't just have a conversation of " what do you think of cover 3?" without him sucking you in like quick sand to question everything of its use and limits on the area of field in conjunction with teaching time and player skill sets and depth...next thing you know its 3 in the morning and you have a $100 bar tab off of pitchers of beer and a pile of scribbled bar napkins in the corner.... my guy www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/davenport-ia/bradley-verdon-5792989
