How many players are too few to actually have a season?
22 in the program. 3 are on the fence and 3 more a freshmen. Thank God it’s Friday. Tequila is calling my name…

I've coached some small teams in the past. 22 is about getting there to be honest. Especially if 6 are ?s. We finished in the teens my last year at one school. Was pretty stressful. We knew lots of coaches we played against and kind of set the table when talking to them like hey if we get dinged up too much this game we may have to pull the plug kind of stuff.
Does your school have a policy on it? We took it week to week and kept the ship afloat. Is this your official number, has school started yet where you could grab a few extra bodies?
Last thing, I feel the pain we played a dbl tight dbl wing team one week and had 16 kids at practice. Thats real fun trying to run a scout O with those numbers lol

My "Magic Number" was 17 but that was for each level (Varsity, JV, and-or Freshmen), not 9-12.
Even then having effective, productive practices (especially game preparation) can be difficult.
For example:
3 WRs 2 TEs 3 Tackles 3 Guards 2 Centers 2 QBs 3 RBs
3 DEs 3 DTs 3 OLBers 2 MLBers 3 CBs 3 Safeties
Basically I wanted a "Pair and a Spare" for positions that required two starters, a backup-substitute for the rest.
Obviously some cross-training can (may have to) take place.
And yes I know the offensive numbers don't add up to 17. But we could do things to ameliorate that somewhat.
For example if we had more WRs than TEs we could go 20 personnel.
A RB or WR may have to be the 2nd QB.
Etc.

I can’t get to the school until 3:30, they get out at 3:40. They are in the wind and ditch early so trying to recruit the hallways is damn near impossible. The core we have are bought in, so that is our saving grace. I think we’ll be ok if they can get their physicals done, stay eligible, and practice smart.

We had 15 one season, and 11 for one game that year.
Longest/Best year of my career.
We were in a league with people who had around 45 total on the roster.

probably not the same, but when my son was in jh, his 7th grade and then the next year, 8th grade team had 13 (occasionally 12) kids. this was in a 3A school. he was just in a small class.
they lost one game, i think.

I once coached at a very small private school that went the whole season with 16. Thanks to California playoff setup we played a school in the playoffs who brought down over 100 on their roster.
I on several occasions coached an 8 man team with only 9, the one guy subbing reminded me of "Necessary Roughness". We actually had 11 on he roster, but two were out for extended period with injuries.
I wouldn't deem either situation safe

We played one game with 17 kids that year, one was a female kicker. CN sent a LB to Arizona and, no {censored}, has a clip on his highlights of knocking one of my OL horizontal to the ground.
CA HS football is a mess, but that's a different thread.

Seen a couple teams in my area play with those numbers over the years. Almost always seemed like someone would get killed at any moment. Not sure your situation but when I’ve seen it I have always thought the best thing to do if wanting to really create a program would be to just start over . Spend a year just playing jv games . Your kids will learn a ton and won’t get their heads crushed in and get a bad taste in their mouths that will cause things to never improve numbers wise. Easier to talk about than do I know

Easier to talk about than do I know Had a discussion with the previous HC about that. He suggested that if had to do it over (Beginning again after covid) to start with a JV program. I always get stuck between staying with a Varsity level and helping the upper classmen and just rebooting the whole thing.

Ah yes. Cardinal Newman and for that matter Marin Catholic too. Some years back NCS expanded to 6 or 7 divisions for playoffs. Man, the team we had that year! We thought for sure it was going to be our year to win section. Midway through the season, about October, both CN and MC dropped down into a our section from a high section. Lost to MC by like 4 or 5 points in the semi's. Oh well. Want to be the best, got to beat the best.

Unless the best is De La Salle, who knocked us out of the playoffs my last two years in HS football. We just knew we'd do our best and go take a trip to Concord to end our season. I think they're up to 3 straight years of being knocked out by DLS now, maybe 4.
