Just curious to see what you all are doing this season. I’ve always been a captain guy. Team votes for two, coaches appoint one, and the 4th one gets decided each week.

Started this last year. We vote. Can be as many as 6. We set a threshold for a minimum number of votes received to be a captain. Guys can vote for 1-6 guys they want.
Last year we had 2 captains.

Always interesting to have coaches vote and players vote. Usually similar, but sometimes kids gravitate to some kids for whatever reason.
We have used the following over the years and when I've been at different programs: 1. Players vote = 1 and coaches vote = 2. Top 4-6 get to be a captain (other factors went into this) 2. 1 offensive captain and 1 defensive captain and rotate other seniors weekly. 3. 2 captains selected by the head coach and decided who goes out each week 4. Nominate yourself and had to speak in front of selected coaches of why you should be a captain 5. Utilized a checklist of things they had to meet in order to be a captain

Returning sophomores and juniors are given a nomination form at a meeting immediately after spring practices. The form lists 10 criteria a captain candidate must meet. They can list up to 3 candidates. Nomination forms are collected. The candidates receiving the most nominations are discussed by the staff to determine which ones qualify. HC meets with each one to let them know their peers have indicated they have met the criteria and have been nominated as a captain candidate. HC hands each nominee a Team Captain Expectation handout, and instructs the nominees to take the handout home to discuss it with their parents/guardians. HC contacts the parents/guardians to let them know their son has been nominated. Nominees inform HC of their intentions to pursue captaincy or not. HC lets the candidates know they will be selected based upon their ability to lead during the summer and pre-season. HC informs team, team ultimately determines who the Captains will be prior to the first game.

What are your expectations of captains? Do they serve food during team meals? Do they mentor teammates who are struggling with academics?
It’s my experience is that captains can’t lead unless we teach them how.

We have spent a lot of time this spring and summer with a leadership council teaching them how to lead themselves and others as well as what the standard is. In fact they have helped develop the standard. Captains will end up being picked from those junior and senior boys. I am partial to this system I used in a previous school which I got from another coach. The players nominated teammmates by answering these four questions:
Who has worked the hardest since last year ended? Who has worked the hardest since practice started? Who is the glue guy or lynch pin? (Explain it as when the fit hits the shan who do they look to for leadership?) Who best represents our program in the community.
Then the coaches picked from those nominations.

We do things a little differently. For the regular season, only seniors who meet qualifications can be game captains. We rotate it evenly throughtout the season, using 3-4 per game, depending on how many we have that meet the qualifications. The qualifications include things like offseason weightroom attendance, minimum GPA, school discipline, etc.
During the last week of the regular season, the team votes on permanent team captains. These selections are game captains throughout the postseason, and are listed in the yearbook and all records as the offical team captains. This group is not limited to seniors, but must meet the same qualifications. Each player may vote for as few or as many as they feel deserving. There is usually a clear break in the voting that determines the number. The number has been 3 or 4 all but one season, when we had 6 (which happened to be the best regular season we've had).
