What are some good corny sayings to put as the theme for this year's offseason workout shirts? We all have ones we love.
Brick by Brick is one I know is used often. Burn the boats is another.

In the past, we've had the seniors pick the motto that has gone on the shirts. We've had "Win Today", "Win the Day", GUTS, "Nobody Cares, Work Harder" as mottos before.
GUTS = Great Urgency to Succeed

Agreed 100%. My HS coach my Fr- Jr had a "theme" saying every year and I really disliked that guy. So, I equated sayings with cornball coaches the rest of my playing and coaching career. It didn't help my outlook that the 2 HCs I worked for in my coaching career that I was the most miserable working for were big sayings guys. And, finally, as a history major, football coaches falsely attributing "Burn the Boats" to Vikings is really annoying. Vikings were never burning their boats.

May I suggest a "facta non Verba" T shirt for you Or perhaps "non verba sed facta" I can definitely see where if the sayings are meaningless platitudes and not really a guiding mission statement would be hate worthy. See- 95% of public school in-services, trainings, mission statements, and basically anything to do with it But if the saying is truly a foundation of the program, and actions and decisions are always related to serving that saying-- it may be of some use.

I agree. And there are coaches/programs that do that. The vast majority are just bull$hit someone saw at a clinic or trying to sniff PJ Flecks jock.

I don’t mind them as long as they are realistic and focus on improvement or something that is possible for everyone and every team.
I hate the ones that equate hard work or the weight room with championships and all that jazz. We all have had players who could have spent the summer drinking beer and chasing tail and never step foot in a weight room and still showed up the first day of practice and been the best player on the team. We also have lost games to teams that we couldn’t have beaten with the greatest offseason program and dedication in the history of football.

IMO you can use any slogan you want as long as the word "Grind" isn't in it.

If you give me 3 hours to chop down a tree, I'll spend the 1st 2 hours sharpening my axe. Shorten to just 'sharpen your axe', or if it an accomplishment shirt "I sharpened my axe" If you do any team reading stuff and want to use David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, then you can spin off the '10,000 repetitions' angle. Another reader that is pretty easy reader is some of Jocko Willink's books, and there are several slogans you can steal from those. Embrace the Suck Of course if you really want the cheese just go with

I was like that as a player , i hated it last school year i was putting quotes on the board a diff one everyday, Kids loved it. I think this generation of kids like it cause it isnt played out for them. noone does those cheesy coach stuff anymore, cause we got tired of it as players. one of my players uses one of my favorite sayings i repeat all the time as his twitter bio "How we do one thing, is how we do all things". is the saying 100% true? no but it helps remind the kids to get after it even in the mundane. That saying is too big for a T-shirt though xD

I like the one Chip Kelly uses often.
"You don't rise to the occassion, you fall to your lowest level of training."
It's not fancy, or Mamba Mentality motivational, but it's to the point and gets the message across that you can't just flip a switch on compete on a Friday night. That competitive attitude has to be trained daily.

My go to salutation is to call everyone is 'Taterhead'; students, players, teachers, admin....... just a 'hey y'all' kind of thing.
When I'm off my time and one of the kids I've had around walks by me without me even looking I'll get a "Hey Taterhead" back at me without me even looking at them.

I do love some good Jocko stuff particularly when he talks about discipline.

I've been with my head coach for 13 seasons now, we've gone through the whole cycle of having a saying/motto for the year, not having anything, and everything in between.
Early on, we always had a motto. One year we were projected to be pretty bad, but our team obviously thought otherwise, so the motto was "Prove It" - We did prove something... by going 2-8 for the worst record our school had in over 20 years.
A couple years later, one of our other assistants came up with a saying that he thought represented our small, undersized, but tough and hard working team. We got shirts with the saying on the back of it, had signs up in the locker room, and got wristbands for the kids to wear to school. All of that resulted in yet another 2-8 record.
After the second bad year with a saying, our HC was reading some leadership stuff, either from Jocko or some other coach - but the point was after reading it he gave up on trying to come up with a saying or motto to fit the year, and came up either our team's "Core Values." Instead of finding something cool to say year to year, we were going to make our team and players reflect the core values of our program - EFfort, Attitude, Toughness, Intensity, and Accountability. We have the values plastered all over our locker room, talk about them weekly, and even have the team vote on new captains every week based on the core value that we've chosen for the week. The kids have fully bought into it, and if you ask our HC why we've had success recently he'll point to the core values as a main reason
We might still have a motto or phrase for the year, but it's not coming from the coaches anymore. If we have one at all it's made up organically by the kids, and more often than not it is a motto or name for a position group rather than the whole team

Personally you can't have enough,, Culture beats talent hard work beats talent, brick by brick. Heavymetal company I mean these literally add 200lbs to every players squat and bench. Power clean only 195. I put them all on the back of a t shirt and watch my team grow.
Please remember this guy should be your strength coach at all times.
