...but maybe the funniest.
May tell all you young bucks where HS Football has come from.
In our last game of 1986 we played at a neighborhood rival.
Consolidated school (two nearby rural communities).
At that time their HC was all-time winningest coach in the state.
We were both 7-1 and thus big game besides rivalry.
The home team Boosters Club, instead of doing a "50-50" raffle, had a "Turkey Drop" fundraiser.
They had squares marked off on the macadam leading to the gate to the field.
Sold tickets to see which square a turkey they had on a leash would first do his business.
I know this for a fact because we had to walk around the squares and Tom to go through the gate to the field.
That's not all.
There were no benches on the visitors' sideline, only about ten rusty old folding chairs.
No hash marks on the field, which needless to say was not in great shape.
And of course no Press Pox phones for visitors (back in those days you often brought your own Porta Phones and strung them around the field to PB).
Five years later that school made it to the state championship game in their class.
And the next year did not field a varsity team because of lack of numbers.
They have struggled to win-be competitive ever since.

How does that even happen? If a school made it to the title game around here every swinging dik in the school would be out the next year

If a school made it to the title game around here every swinging dik in the school would be out the next year We have a minimum of 8 to 10 schools in Illinois that have won or been in state championships that no longer field a team, are 8 man because of lack of involvement or just no longer exist as a school. A private school here in the place I live won state in 22 going 14-0 and went 1-8 last year. Their only win was against another truly horrible private school in Missouri. They got outscored 180 to 411 on the season.
