Hey, Cleaning out an equipment room and noticed that we don’t have an ‘Oh Sh!t’ bag, medical kit, or a tool kit with helmets/shoulder pad parts. I kind of have an idea of what to put in these, but looking for some input to make sure I don’t miss anything. Thanks guys.

Is the “Oh Sh!t” bag the 12th man bag or something different?

You never know what the lighting will be in some places.

Our "Oh $h!t" bag had one of each size of pants, one of each size girdles, an extra lineman jersey and an extra skill jersey. A big size pair of cleats (11 or 12s) a small size pair of cleats (9 or 10) extra kicking tees, mouth pieces, and a bag of zip ties.
Our Helmet case had two extra facemask, (In 14 years of coaching I have had one broken facemask where the ref actually said it had to be fixed so that the athlete could continue to play, but we didn't have one to replace so we took the helmet from a kid who was injured earlier in the game), several extra chin straps, nurse scissors (because we live in South Carolina and the boys don't think there visors are going to fog over in the humidity), a screw driver, needle nose pliers, regular pliers, and a parts kit that we got from our Riddle rep (we just keep refilling it when it gets low, if you ask your Riddle Rep they will probably give you one)
I have never packed or seen what is inside the medical bag because we have a trainer that shows up on home games with her bag already packed.

I know that a lot of schools can't afford this, but this is a one time purchase or you can collect as you go.
My kit had all the standard stuff plus:
A pair of 7-16 size cleats. No 1/2 sizes. Again, one time purchase.
S, M, L, XL, XXL shoulder pads.
Same for girdles.
Extra back plates and at least one rib protector.
Same for game pants plus a XXXL. (Our game pants had belts already in them and we put knee pads in the pants)
Knee pads
2 back jerseys and 2 line jerseys.
Helmets - different sizes with the chin straps ready to go and already fitted to a person. It would have to, of course, be adjusted for the person that actually needed it, but having the chinstrap already on there and adjusted for a regular person will save you a minute of time (2 plays).
Chinstraps
Mouthpieces
Air pumps (for helmet and footballs)
SIPs (Shoulder injury pads) Arm strap for those that dislocate shoulder Kerr collars
Extra tees
Extra footballs including 2 bags (one for each half) that had 2 footballs in that bag with a towel. Ready for unexpected rain game.
Socks!!!!
Shoestrings

We do a dummy check before we leave that saves a lot of forgotten items.
We have them TOUCH items as we go down a check list.
Touch your helmet Touch your mouth piece Touch you girdle Touch your cleats Touch your whatever
This has virtually eliminated forgotten items. We still take everything for equipment malfunctions but dummy check eliminates a lot of pregame headaches.
Right or wrong another thing we teach is a “cramp” play. We call plays off a wristband and it’s 99. If we have an important player out in an important spot because of equipment malfunction we will call it to buy time. Then we will use a timeout on the next play if needed. I’m torn on it because it’s definitely a little shady but I’m not losing a game because one of my best players is out of the game because a random equipment issue.
Two other things I don’t think I saw mentioned above that we keep in our bag is hand warmers. Call us soft but we want our qbs hands comfortable and we will offer them to officials on miserable nights. None have ever turned them down. We also have a cleat cleaner in our bag. One of the ones kids drag their feet on.
On wet nights we encourage kids to bring half time clothing change and we provide towels to each player.

One of everything to outfit a player and then a few extra mouth guards.

"Noah's ark"
2 of everything needed for a player. 1 for a bigger/ineligible player. 1 for a smaller/eligible player.

Tip for eliminating the need to carry extra helmets of every size:
"Helmet Buddies" - Every varsity guy gets 1 JV/young guy (that will not play on Friday's) who has the same size and style helmet as them. If something breaks on their helmet, they yell for their helmet buddy, swap helmets quick, and they're out for 1 play max while their helmet gets fixed on the sideline.
JV games are a crap shoot, you've got bad luck if you have a player sent off in a JV game for equipment malfunction anyway

I was thinking about this while reading posts before yours. You always need spare equipment handy, of course, but I always did an equipment check before leaving for a road game. Johnny Fivestar forgetting to pack his cleats is a preventable problem.
I like the helmet buddy idea someone mentioned.

We always do an equipment check also, but sometimes kids still forget something. It happens. Not often, but once is enough. Plus things break. I have had a kid blow a cleat completely out and miss a whole series. So now we have a cleat in every size ready to go.

Helmet buddy is good but watch for head lice. Not to be nit picky, but now a days some would not say a helmet buddy is a good idea.

All really great ideas! Thanks for responding.
My follow up question would be, how do you store and travel your kits? Some suggestions have a lot of equipment.

I don’t imagine this will fit under the bus.

All really great ideas! Thanks for responding. My follow up question would be, how do you store and travel your kits? Some suggestions have a lot of equipment. I've seen a lot of teams carry their extra equipment/hardware kits in soft-sided bags. They're convenient for travel, but I hate when stuff gets wet then you either have to pull it all apart to let it dry or worry about rust and mold. A couple years ago I got a few of these husky waterproof storage boxes. One for our "oh sh*t" equipment, one for pregame/kicking balls, one for game balls, and one for towels and other misc. stuff. We're going on year 4 with them, very well worth the purchase price www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-30-Gal-Professional-Duty-Waterproof-Storage-Container-with-Hinged-Lid-in-Red-252246/317446011
