Watching the coaching change cycle play through this year, and there were several schools that had the HC leave and almost immediately some of the schools named an interim HC. And in several cases the interim HC was eventually named the full time HC.
In the past you would only see the interim tag applied if it happened shortly before the start of or in the middle of the season. In several of the cases, the previous HC had left before Christmas and one of the assistants was named interim before any real search could begin.
Is this a by product of 'year-a-round' football?
Is the interim HC already a shoe in for the job, and the DO just has to go through the motions of opening the job/interviews?
thoughts?

Is this a by product of 'year-a-round' football? IMO yes, especially in a transfer world.....heard of schools losing a HC for x,y,z and all weight room operations that were going stop, kids start leaving, etc. etc. Easiest way to keep it all going is to name an interim. If your season ends in November and you start lifting before Christmas or even in January and you don't have a guy in, tough to do that without a guy leading the helm. If everyone reported back before Spring, wouldn't be such a big deal. Is the interim HC already a shoe in for the job, and the DO just has to go through the motions of opening the job/interviews? IMO, no, they aren't a shoe-in. At least from what I've seen around here. Especially if it's after the season. In-season that guy has a long time to interview. But around here (GA) I'd say it's pretty split of how it ends up. What works for the interim is they have a lot of time to build that relationship not only as a position coach but now as the guy leading the off-season work.

I think the biggest thing from the school's point of view is maintaining program operations...there's always stuff that needs to be going on, even if it's just helmet reconditioning, opening the weight room, etc.
My program had a head coaching change a few years back and we went 3 months or so without a head coach or interim head coach and the players really don't like it, even if they're out of season. Another program I formerly worked at went 3-4 months without a team recently and eventually the parents and boosters start to get a little unhappy as well. Having an interim head coach helps to remedy some of that I think.
When I have seen interim head coaches they're usually "the guy" remaining from the existing staff who would be most supported as the next head coach OR an assistant who has been around a long time but has no interest in being head coach. So again from the school's point of view you either give your top internal guy a chance to show his value or you get somebody who is very committed to keeping the program running but is not going to take it personal when someone else is hired...hard to say which is better.

only take right before the season otherwise, bail I was hired by a school late in June that couldn't find someone on their staff to serve as an interim coach! I was out of state, had applied for the job, had a good resume, but didn't get an interview originally. When they ran out of options they recontacted me, brought me in for an interview, and hired me. Unbenownst to me at the time I was hired to coach the team until they got the guy they had originally wanted. I found THAT out the year I was replaced (year two) by that very same guy! Almost killed my career.
