Playing for two teams is nothing new!
One of my old time mentors, many years ago, told me about his experiences playing football in a rural area of West Virginia in the late 1950's.
It seems that "Joe's" coach decided to punish him for skipping practice, and wouldn't let him go on a road trip with the team.
So on Friday night, Joe goes to a school across town, suits up, and plays for them. He runs for like 250 yards!
When the coach comes back from the road trip, the next day, asks Joe if he's learned his lesson! Joe nodded in agreement, the coach never found out about it.

Because he still has to be a student at the university ?? Right now, take away football, and this is no different than many students who start school one place, transfer to another, and then transfer back (for whatever reason). What I would want to know is if the player in question is attending classes at Iowa, and maintaining eligibility. When a player "enters the transfer portal" or announces a transfer, that doesn't mean he is packing up the apartment or dorm room and leaving that day.

I thought the punchline was going to be: "The next day, HFC asks Joe: "Why the hell don't you run like that for US??!"

So is this guy going to be eligible in the fall? Or does two transfers equal sitting a year?

Probably online classes to keep eligibility. He found a loop hole for sure, free transfer because of new coach, get paid at new school, then get paid to come back and only count as first transfer. That system is totally broken....

Back in the Naughts, I was at a school on an epic run. We had won it all in 2008, and returned just about everybody in 2009 but a kicker and couple on the back end of the defense. We were the odds on favorite to win our third in a row, and 7 of the last 8. But we laid an egg turnover wise in the championship game to lose 17-28 to a region rival we had beat earlier in the year 17-10.
2010 rolls around, and we had graduated everyone. The rival has a bunch coming back. We face again in the regular season and we lose this time by 7. Both of us make the playoffs and advance through brackets and once again meet in the finals. This time we win by 3 TDs.
Why this story in this thread? I'm not finished....
2010 we lost the 1st matchup. The very next week we get a transfer.... from the other school. He didn't play against us in that game, but we had seen him some on film -- played a little HBack, a little LB. He enrolls; he had made a 'bonafide move' into our district (that's what our League calls an acceptable move/transfer).
He ends ups being a starter at LB for us in the finals in which we beat his old team. So he won back to back rings from two different teams that played each other both years.

Shoot! After the recent court decisions everything is wide open on the portal!!
I have close ties to the UA program, and I was miserable all last season with this guy. I kept defending him initially (that he was young and had some learning and catching-up to do for SEC Football) and to give him some time. It quickly changed for me: Let's get another player helping him out on that corner with blocking; let's run play-action passes and not drop back so much; let's practice footwork more each week with him; if he is the only left-side offensive tackle qualified to play then we need to recruit more offensive linemen!!
I was happy that he was going to Iowa, because he showed maybe 01% of improvement all last season.
When I saw this on the news last night, my only comment was: I hope the new regime has some system that he can function in at offensive tackle, or he has greatly improved his skill-set in the off-season, or they are moving him to defense.

Keep in mind that for almost the eternity of college football, a coach could do exactly this as well.

Keep in mind that for almost the eternity of college football, a coach could do exactly this as well. True. But the coach also wasn't attending college to get his degree. It was his job. And I know, I know, college students can transfer at will also to get their degree. The questions is this, do we want rules or not? This no rules thing is not going to work out well in my opinion. Like I said, let's just trade teams midseason, or why not at half, or why not just each possession trade teams? All-time QBs are a thing in backyard football. Also, I am not against players getting paid NIL. But let's back up a second and remember what NIL is. It is Name, Image, Likeness. Only 0.1% are getting paid for that. The rest are just getting paid to play sports. Again, fine (not really, but ok), but if you are just getting paid to play, can we at least have contracts? Lastly, I am for the players getting their scholarship, food, housing, gear, goodies, and even a stipend. I also am good with them getting actual NIL deals. (Sorry the 2nd team LG is not helping sell anything). I am not good with them getting paid with zero contracts or restrictions or transparency.

I coached against him in HS. I thought he was a better DL than OL. His physical tools are tremendous, but it was clear he wasn't a skilled OL. Just gifted.

I don't want to just crap on the kid. I think he may have fallen in the trap that a lot of elite high schoolers fall into: he's better than his competition, so he isn't forced to refine and improve his skills. He was an absolute force of nature in HS.

We have gone back to the early 20th Century and the era of the "tramp athlete," when kids jumped from school to school, often played Semi-Pro under assumed names, and there were no eligibility rules other than what each school chose to enforce (or not).
Which was the genesis for the formation of the NCAA.

Are there academic issues when a player transfers around like this? If they are failing classes at one institution and enroll at another place do their grades even matter?

It just occurred to me that, now that it's legal to pay players the Southwest Conference may be back.
